Hey everyone, While I was hanging out with some friends yesterday, I thought of a system for Halo 5, That may keep people interested.
So what this is, Is kind of like TF2 in a way, Ok… So here’s what happens.
When your playing Halo 5, Your just walking around and killing enemies, Having a good time. Next thing you know, There is a notification in the bottom middle of your HUD. When you finish the game, You find out you picked up a new Mark VI helmet. Or it can be the shoulders, Torso, Forearms, Legs, or a Visor. Maybe it was a new weapon skin or armor skin! You see, When people play games, They like rewards. When you played Halo: Reach (if you did) and you saw the Mark V helmet, And you had to be a certain rank to get it, As well as a certain amount of credits. And how good did it feel to finally get it? Well, Regardless. This can be a system that can keep people interested! I know I like getting rewards while playing games. There can even be a shop part of the menu, Where you can finish an armor set you just had a pick-up for, Or get the weapon or armor skin you’ve wanted! And with the ability to have updates without well… Updates sending you offline, They can always add things over time! It would be amazing!!

This is why I vote for a ranking system like Reach for unlocks, and one like 3’s (social and competitive) so everyone wins.
Good idea. Unlocks are fine to me, as long as they’re purely aesthetic as you said.
Plus, this idea embraces the skinnerbox mechanic a lot of games use. People will be continuously playing in the hopes of that Mark V helmet dropping (for example), maybe drop chance could be directly correlated to wins? That plus a win-based ranking system like Halo 3 would work perfectly and be a really innovative feature.
I played TF2 and loved this mechanic then, so I support it!
Yeah in-game award notifications are always nice to have. ODST had an in-game integrated achievement system IIRC.
But I’d like the option to disable them.
I’m going to have to say yes and no to this idea. I’ve been playing a lot of Counter Strike: Global Offensive recently, and they just introduced their own weapon skins and whatnot for unlocks. However, you have to wait until the end of the match to receive them (or you don’t get a drop). I think this’d be an interesting idea to bring in, promoting people to play more and not to quit.
However there are drawbacks to the system as well. One thing having a set unlock system does for you is giving someone something to strive for. So they see a helmet they like and go “Dang I really want to unlock that. I should work hard to get it.” and without the unlock system they might never get it, because the drop system GO and TF2 use is random.
So here’s my suggestion: Use the basic ranking system (Reach’s) for the basic unlocks. Any and every armor piece can be obtained this way (save for achievement based armor) after playing for a certain time. However, you can get unique skins from the random drops.
Basically: Reach rank 50, get a MK V helmet. At some other time, get a drop and it’s a MK V “Classic” or MK V “Pulse” or something along those lines. This way you can get unique armor without having all armor pieces being random.
Well that was an overly complicated and poor explanation of what I was trying to say, but I hope you see what I’m getting at. This way we get the best of both worlds, and nobody is left overly disappointed.
Nuh, uh. Bad idea. This will lead to people just trying to get armor and not actually playing the darn game. Have unlocks done AFTER the match. Never during.
