Halo 5: Guardians Story Discussion

At this current era in our knowledge of Halo 5: Guardians, where threads pertaining to the story are the minority, having a consolidated thread may be unneeded. However, when plot details, hints, and trailers start rolling in, the existence of this thread will subdue the endless Flood of threads about the exact same topic that would occur with each reveal… Again and again.

That said, discuss anything related to Halo 5’s story in this humble and preemptively-created consolidated thread.

Well I’ll start off by speculating that a geas will “possess” John do do certain actions that he may end up regretting.

I’m also interested in what Locke and Arby are gonna bring to the table.

I think Master Chief will team up with Blue team for a while and 343i will actually flesh out their characters and reunion. They’ll leave him when Locke starts hunting Chief maybe.

What even is a geas btw?

> What even is a geas btw?

You don’t read the books? I highly recommend it. This is a geas.

I do read the books but I never rlly understood. thanks!

I always thought it was the Halo equivalent of the soul.

I generally like to be optimistic about story related subjects, but the fact that the lead writer for this game has consistently given us unsatisfactory stories and has yet to show any improvement makes me think that Halo 5: Guardians may very well have the worst storyline.

And by “worst,” I mean writing that will make Halo 3 look like the work of Shakespeare.

I disagree.

With the set-up they are doing I feel H5G will have one of the best stories to date.

It’ll have some interesting scenarios to be sure, but I’m worried about how Reed will treat the characters.

Myself and a few of my friends, after reading Silentium, feel that John may be “possessed” by the geas of none other than Iso-Didact/Bornstellar-Makes-Eternal-Lasting. While we haven’t yet seen a human having a Forerunner geas, when you’re talking about (at least, from the Librarian’s perspective) two of the major players of this whole intergalactic opera, I think she’d find a way to imprint Iso-Didact wherever she should so choose…assuming he’s dead. He could very well still be alive and we’ll come face to face with him at some point, but my money would be on the former.

There’s a lot of potential story arcs that have been set up in the comics and the books, I’m interested to see how many of those they bring together in 5. Personally, I would love to see Isla Zane, Spirit of Fire and 343GS make an appearance at some stage

This may be a long post.

I personally like The Ark theory that has been around since the teaser trailer.
John’s on the Ark looking for Mendicant Bias to help stop a Flood Invasion.Which is why “All our lives are at stake”. Further more, the Ark is also the likely home of the Absolute Record. MB and the AR could be one in the same, but I think they are separate entities.
We know the UNSC ship Rubicon returned to the ark and found 343 “Chakas” Spark According to the 4th “11th Hour Report.” further more, that report details the current condition of the Ark.
This passage in particular makes me think of what we see in the teaser trailer:

The damage was… traumatic. Habitability sustainment systems were still active in some locations, but were operating intermittently and in a state of disrepair – a factor that generated extremely volatile weather conditions. Some indigenous [if it can be called that] fauna may have survived the event, but RCTs were strictly advised to avoid all potentially hostile life forms.
After 8.4 days, all contact with RCTs was severed. Only one [RCT-06] returned, suffering extensive casualties.

In the teaser we see the “volatile weather conditions” the severe wind and “Indigenous fauna” being that Seeker/War Sphinx/Sentinel machine.

As the Absolute Record is on the Ark, this gives a reason for not only John to be there searching for Bias, but whoever ends up with the Janus Key will also want to get there. As to weather UNSC or Jul/Halsey have the key (or even if the two halves will be reunited in Escalation, only time will tell.

There is evidence that the Absolute Record is on the Ark. way back in Halo 3’s terminals:

"“Warning: Your intrusion has been logged.

04-343 (errant): Excuse me?

Your intrusion has been logged. And now it has been halted.

04-343 (errant): On whose authority?

Advice: Any further attempt to access [insects under stones] will result in your immediate addition to the local Sentinels’ targeting ledger.

04-343 (errant): Vexation! I am the Monitor of–

Judgment: Your authority means nothing here.

04-343 (errant): Impatience!

04-343 (errant): I have told you who I am. Who are you?
All our makers once held dear.
[Alexandria before the Fire].

04-343 (errant): Sincere apology. But how–

Explanation: This facility is host to the [Librarian’s] final–
04-343 (errant): The archive is intact?! Then our makers’ plan–[/SPOILER]Not only is the reference to the greatest ancient library “Alexandria” comparable to an “Absolute Record” but also what Spark says about “The Archive” and “our makers’ plan” “The Archive” is another reference to what 343 calls “The Absolute Record.” And “our makers’ plan” was the Librarians plan to have humanity awaken the Didact and have him give us the Janus key. But that plan obviously failed, as the Didact is still insane.

What does this all mean for Halo 5’s story? Well, I have a funny feeling that the result of the Janus Key conflict in escalation will leave Halsey and Jul with both Halves. They will then head to the Ark. The UNSC Infinity will follow them there with John and Blue team aboard.
Something will happen where John will disobey an order, leaving him stranded on the Ark with or without Blue Team. here he’ll fight the hostile “fauna” in an effort to find Bias. Things will get really interesting when the UNSC and Covenant show up. The Covenant will bring Halsey and the Janus Key (reasoning above) and there will be a large 2-3 way battle on the Ark.
How does Agent Locke and Thel fit into all this? Locke’s goal is to track down John. He’ll be going from place to place trying to dig up clues as to John’s wearabouts. He may be the one that discovers John is on the ark. He tells Osman and Hood who then send Infinity to find John.
anyway, that’s just how I think it will all go down. of course with Escalation the pre-Halo 5 story is constantly evolving so we shall see if any of this comes to pass.

I support the prospect of the Flood being inadvertently released by the Master Chief when a Gravemind manipulates him into doing so via hallucinations of Cortana.

And better yet, the fact that the unresponsiveness of Abject Testament (easily a result of being captured by Flood breaking containment) is heavily stressed in TN72H and that Installation 03 is taken to the Ark sets grounds for this possibility.

Needless to say, having Chief, grief for Cortana, and a Halo with a Gravemind in its bowels all over at the Ark is a recipe for disaster…

I wonder if the “Locke hunting John” plot will turn this into “The Bourne Halo” haha. All I ask is for a fun game with an interesting story (that isn’t half-confusing). I dunno if I’d want the flood back…still have horrible memories from Legendary campaigns.

This ia also what I’m thinking

Get used to 'em. It’s inevitable that they return.

I hope that the Ark theory is somewhat correct and 343i doesn’t try some irrelevant and confusing story that again has little to no ties to what came before.

It looks like the current issue of OXM holds many information.

> Halo 5: Guardians
> - In mourning for Cortana and seeking a purpose in life, the Master Chief embarks on a journey of self-discovery that may lead to conflict with his allies in the UNSC- Agent Locke solicits the Arbiter’s counsel in order to unravel Master Chief’s fate.- The enemies of humanity plot their next move from the shadows…

I doubt Thel would have a clue of John’s whereabouts, they only fought together in Halo 3, they weren’t best buddies hugging it out.

Locke’s going to him for more than just information about John.

> “In mourning for Cortana and seeking a purpose in life, the Master Chief embarks on a journey of self-discovery that may lead to conflict with his allies in the UNSC.”

Was this just conjecture on OXM’s part, or was this taken from a quoted 343 employee?

Anyway, I find that John’s “journey of self-discovery”. Which “may lead to conflict with his allies in the UNSC.” May indeed be an issue in H5G. He’s on a streak of disobeying orders. First DelRio’s order to surrender Cortana (but that was a given) and in Escalation, going off on another mission with Blue team despite Lord Hood’s order that John get Some R&R.

John is filling the void left by the death of Cortana by not stopping fighting. It’s as if he’s reverted back to being a “Machine” vs. being a “Man.” However, grief, in any form is a very human emotion.

Halo 5 will indeed be dark if we play as a grieving John who doesn’t know when to quit. I think this will catch up to him, forcing him to except loss. Thus making him more human in the end.

Hate to be a crusher of hope, but since 343i has yet to endorse this article (unlike Halo 4’s issue of GameInformer), it’s fair to say that all the information this holds is merely speculation and NOT from the mouths of 343i.
