For those unaware, this weekend Gamers Outreach was hosting Gamers For Giving 2016. A charity that works with the gaming community to build portable game setups for sick children to play video games in hospitals. For almost a decade now, Gamers Outreach has hosted yearly Halo tournaments from Halo 3 all the way to Halo 5 now. But that all changed last night because of Xbox One’s lack of LAN mode, the tournament had to be cancelled because of the system itself.
Now I understand LAN isn’t the most important thing since online play has taken off, but it was something the Xbox community was build on beginning with Halo 1. This isn’t the first time a minor or major tournament has had issues with the Xbox One console and the lack of LAN.
I don’t want “we’ll look into it” line, something has to be done. This is embarrassing as a Halo and Xbox fan since 2003. Anyways I hope this can see the right people at MS/Xbox like Major Nelson.
If you would like to donate to Gamers For Giving 2016 please do so.
It’s sad the days of LAN and REAL social gaming is over. In college we had tons of fun still playing Halo CE with 12-16 people on our floor. This was even during the height of the Halo 2 time.
The fact that EVERYONE needs an Xbox one, copy of halo, XBL account, TV, etc is sad. Commercial gluttony at its finest.
We still get together and do LAN with Halo 5. Although its border line sad that we have to load up our cars with Tvs, Xboxs, cables, Ethernet switches etc and spending almost an hour setting up just to play.
The game runs solely on dedicated servers, there is no p2p connection. Halo 5 cannot and will not be LAN capable for these reasons. We’ve known that for quite some time. 343 gave us plenty of notice, I would chalk this one up to poor planning and research on the event organizer’s behalf.

The dedicated servers were down during the event and no LAN support to fall back on. Sad.

Plenty of notice. A lot of people don’t go on the forums. They maybe announced it on a very small post, as they did with no forge at launch and so on. There was no “plenty of notice”. Maybe a small note left on a fridge magnet.
I don’t know any one who knew much about things not being there like we used to have like no split screen and lan
When I heard there was no split screen I thought it had to be some lame -Yoink- joke why would they release a game with out it. I used LAN and split screen through Halo CE, 2-4, and reach with the majority being split screen.

> Ars Technica June 29, 2015There are more, but I feel I’ve proved my point. While the loss of features is disheartening, 343 did provide enough warning.
I’ve never heard of any of those sites before
Also not to mention that some stores would with hold information if it could effect a sale. When I bought my Xbox one and halo 5 they tried to sell me another controller for co-op. That was at Game a store known for asking their employees to lie to sell products.
