Halo 5: Guardians + Elite Controller

For those of you who are getting or are wanting to get an Elite controller for use in H5G (amongst other games, of course), how will you set up your button layout?
For example, here’s the button layout I’m planning on using (barring testing changes):

  • LS - Sprint / Zoom - RS - [Vacant] - DU - Team Controls - DL - Switch Grenades - DR - Switch Grenades - DD - [Vacant] - A - Jump / Clamber - B - Use Thruster Pack - X - Action / Reload - Y - Switch Weapons - LT - Smart-Link - LB - Throw Grenade - RT - Fire Weapon - RB - Melee / Spartan Charge / Ground Pound - LTP (Left Top Paddle) - Crouch - LBP (Left Bottom Paddle) - Action / Reload - RTP (Right Top Paddle) - Jump / Clamber - RBP (Right Bottom Paddle) - Use Thruster PackSo let us know how you guys are planning on upping your H5G game with the Elite below!

As a note, I’ll have the slot 1 on the controller to be a default controller scheme (for Xbox Home menus, etc.), but then have this setup for H5G in slot 2. I’ve already figured out exactly what buttons will have to be moved to which.

I’ve also gone ahead and done the same thing for HCE, H2, H3, H3ODST, and H4 in the MCC. Assuming the date on Microsoft’s store is correct, we’ll be getting the Elite on October 6th, which gives us three weeks until H5G releases. I’m planning on playing the other Halos to get used to having the exact same buttons do as much of the exact same thing as H5G will once it drops.

I’m so stoked for this!

im not spending the money on the elite but I’m getting a scuff with the paddles set to jump on the right and thrust on the left using default or zoom and shoot if they remapped the zoom button to the stick.

That sounds awesome, too! I currently use the “claw” where I use my index fingers for ABXY, which works really well and keeps my thumb on the RS, but after having done so for close to 10 years, my finger is starting to not like it as much. I’m thinking the Elite is a bit more ergonomic for my digits :stuck_out_tongue:

After having played H5G’s beta for only three weeks, I still catch myself trying to do things from the beta in other Halo titles. It was that “natural” and made that much of an impression in gameplay. I can’t wait to get all of the new Spartan Abilities under control how I want it

I’m a bit confused on your LS setup. So if you smart-linked and wanted to sprint away quickly, it would count that as a zoom so you couldn’t sprint while smart-linked? Seems like a very minor issue to me though.

No, I actually copied the text (mostly) from the Gamescom controller setup page. The spint/zoom is almost always sprint. The only time it’s different is when you are using Smart-Link w/ something like the sniper with a dual zoom. You click left stick to toggle the second zoom option.
Sorry for the confusion.

Edit: I re-read your comment. I could see how there could be an issue with wanting to sprint away instantaneously while in Smart-Link. I’m not sure on the hierarchy of the buttons (as in, if I’m using Smart-Link, will certain other buttons register at all, etc.), so I can’t speak about that, but in general the issue shouldn’t be present unless you’re using a dual-position-zooming weapon (like the sniper). Otherwise, I don’t think clicking the left stick would do anything.
However, even if it did, it’d be very rare that a person would want to quick-sprint away after having been “smart-linked” in, while also not letting off of the Smart-Link button. I can see this maybe being a plausible issue, but not very probable at all.

Literally the only reason I’m gonna drop $150 on the Elite Controller is Halo 5. To many things for a comfortable control setup for me.

So far I think the Default setup should work fine with how I’ll play Halo 5; however, I might duplicate the Thruster Ability and Jump/Clamber to two paddles on the backside – as long as they feel comfortable in reaching and using – or I might just try swapping the Thruster Ability and Crouch. I think it could be interesting linking the Thruster Ability to the “RS” while moving Crouch to the “B” button and making it toggle-able; I’ll have to see if using the Thruster with the “RS” works as well as I hope it might.

Really, I want the customization ability of the ELITE controller for the MCC. I’ve been using the Universal Bumper Jumper setting on it, but I’d really love to just rework the controls for each Halo title into my own sort-of universal setting.

Basically regular Bumper / Jumper with the following paddles mappings to help me avoid taking my thumb off the sticks in mid combat but also not clicking the sticks.

  • Left Top paddle => Zoom (mapped from Right Stick)
  • Right Top paddle => Thrust (mapped from X or B)
  • Left Bottom paddle => Crouch (mapped from left stick)
  • Right Bottom paddle => Sprint (mapped from A)

@eLantern - if you like bumper jumper check out my idea above.

As someone who HAS the Scuf, and is buying the Elite… I highly suggest getting the Elite instead. Trust me, the customization is so much more, and it’s cheaper. Granted the color scheme isn’t customizable, but it’s much better. Just sayin.

I don’t think I’ll be getting the Elite controler

I’ll probably use the default recon scheme but have the paddles on ABXY in an attempt to stop continuing to destroy my fingers by clawing.

Anyone using Elite controllers should have a special emblem over their Spartan’s head at all times so when regular average people get walloped by them then they have a valid excuse why.

I was thinking about getting one before I saw the new Master Chief themed controller. lol.

Which is funny, because the only people who would ever see the thing are my wife and me. I would sacrifice all the luxuries and convenience of finally being able to set up Farcry to play like Halo. I wouldn’t even use paddles.

I think my Halo scheme is too ingrained to change it up that drastically. I’ve never used paddles before or scuff controllers or any modded controllers. I also don’t really play competitively, so it’d most likely be a waste of money on my end.

I just want to be able to hop in to Destiny or Farcry and have my Halo scheme with right-stick zoom and left-trigger grenades … actually, I don’t think that would really work well with those games, considering the amount of time you spend scoped … especially Destiny.

In all actuality, I probably won’t get it or the Chief controller. Simply because I can’t really justify the cost of that in regards to the two perfectly fine Xbox One controllers I got with the console (one I purchased). And I do 99% of the gaming on the Xbox, so I really don’t need three.

Briefly, there are three main reasons I’m getting one:

  • Ergonomics - it’s better for my hand than clawing
  • Efficiency - having the controls mapped out just as I want them for any particular game (mainly Halo titles) helps me be my personal best more consistently
  • Convenience - having the controls mapped out as universally as possible across all games (especially for things like the MCC where quick game shifting is commonplace) will help remove any possible misimputs/confusion on my part in the heat of battle.Nothing that is a requirement for other gamers, but I thought a simple list of my reasons might help you understand and possibly even consider it (even if down the road).
  • LS - Sprint - RS - Zoom - DU - Team Controls - DL - Switch Grenades - DR - Switch Grenades - DD - [Vacant] - A - Jump - B - Crouch - X - Action/Reload - Y - Switch Weapons - LT - Throw Grenade - LB - Thrust - RT - Fire Weapon - RB - Melee / Spartan Charge / Ground Pound - LTP (Left Top Paddle) - Crouch - LBP (Left Bottom Paddle) - [Vacant] - RTP (Right Top Paddle) - Jump / Clamber - RBP (Right Bottom Paddle) - [Vacant]I might use the bottom paddles instead of the top ones, it just depends on what’s more comfortable.

Yeah, this is definitely subject to change barring comfort. I tried putting thought into which position would be better suited for what. My middle finger is stronger than my ring finger, so I put the more-used and/or sustained action controls on the top paddles (LTP = crouch & RTP = jump/clamber). The lower paddles (LBP = action/reload & RBP = thruster) are hit much less often or require a simple one-tap to complete the action. I feel, as of now, that that makes the most sense to me.

Also, I’ve edited the OP. I hadn’t noticed until rewatching the ViDoc that you can duplicate controls onto multiple buttons, so I’m going to keep the standard ABX buttons intact, and just put A on RTP, B on LTP, and X on RBP.

Odd. I think stick zoom is one of the worst features of the halo control scheme. Not only does it wear out our stick but by asking you to flex the larger muscles in your hand at the same time you’re trying to do fine-tune aiming it really slows you down. I prefer zooming with the opposite hand that I’m aiming with.

Crouch and melee to the top two paddles. Thats it for me.
