Halo 5 graphics: Beta vs Final

So, I never had a chance to play the beta for myself, and did not fully understand what people meant by saying the beta was more of a darker, grittier experience. HOWEVER, I stumbled across this YouTube video and was completely blown away by the stark contrast between the two. The beta looks absolutely gorgeous in these screenshots. I’ve never been one to gripe about Halo 5: Guardians but I personally feel it was a lost opportunity to create a more dynamic visual experience for players. Maybe there were some performance issues and that was the reason for the downgrade, I don’t know. I just wanted to get opinions on the subject from my fellow Spartans. What do you all think?

The beta looked so much better. The sounds, the visuals, everything. The gameplay/gunplay was obviously still in progress, but the beta looked way better than the final game. I believe they had to drop visuals and what not for franerate issues.

i kinda get what your saying but no at the same time, sometimes the beta looks better and the final looks better with more detail. :S i feel its just 343s decisions with the lighting on some maps.

The lighting did feel a lot more dynamic in the beta, but I wonder what this guys brightness settings are for each comparison. His final game photos seem considerably darker than what I’m used to seeing in game, so I’m curious if his settings were equal.

While I think his photos of the final product might be a bit darker than what we are each used to, also remember that the Spartans practically glow in the dark, so we likely don’t always notice a bit of extra darkness because the enemy/targets glow like they are standing in light, regardless of most scenery.
Also, our Spartans react to light realistically (look at something bright after looking at something dark makes the light very bright until the eyes/visor adjusts)so that may also have an effect.

The best comparison of Beta vs Now is the map Eden. It was beautiful. It was dark, you saw rain drops occasionally, the Energy Sword was high risk, high reward due to it being so bright. The maps were dark in the Beta and the Spartans were a bit bright so you could see them easier. But they had to sacrifice the visuals to hold the 1080p 60fps. Still a great looking game IMO.

I played the Beta for like minutes and was getting my a** kicked so I decided to stop playing it.

However, I’ve seen a few Beta videos since H5’s release and I’ve got to say in my opinion the Beta looked soooo soooo soooo much better.

I mean if you go on forge a make a pitch black box, your spartan is still visable. I mean wth? I know it’s probbaly got some reason behind it but, I don’t really care, I’d prefer it looked better.

However, I will state it is certainly easier for me to say this now, but I’d it was actually like the Beta I maybe would have a different opinion. But going off looks alone, I’d personally say the Beta is what should have been.

I really hope Halo 6 looks like the Halo 5 beta.

Aye, i was blown outta my shoes when the final version came out…

Such a downgrade and i have a hard time understanding why! Those Beta graphics were on point!
It’s one of the decisions i just can’t understand, why they would scale down so much when they pretty much hit the nail back then.

343 made it like that to improve target acquisition in dark locations.
Personally, I thought the lights on all the Armour did that job already.

I don’t think it’s graphics as much as it was atmosphere. The lighting just created better atmosphere really.

Tbh, both versions suffer from a frankly ugly, over designed art style.

This is just a case of 343 listening to tge wrong complaints. Alot of people complained that tge game looked “too dark” and that they “couldn’t see”. The rest was just so that Microsoft can stroke them the -Yoinks!- saying “Hey look our console can do 1080p and have a constant 60fps!” even though it’s not always 1080p since it’s a dynamic resolution, wich works don’t get me wrong cause I think dynamic resolution should be the standard for consoles, and the 60fps part is true to a certain degree because some stuff at a distance lower to 30fps.

They’re the same graphics, I reallly wish you people would learn what they are for a change cuz the only difference between the beta and now is lighting and textures being changed, the graphics are the exact same.

343 changed the art style because fans were upset that the game looked gritty.

Well, I figured that video was cool and all but it didn’t really do enough to show off armor either…so I put some time aside and made an album on Imgur here that has photos from the Beta, and photos from the Final (that I tried to get as close to the original as possible for comparison). That album could probably help a bit, so…show it some love!

Yeah I can definitely agree the graphics were a bit better in some situations, but I much prefer the new sounds.

Well, whatever the technical terms are, they looked better before.
