Alright, so I’ve got a request for Halo 5’s forge. I’ve actually got a bunch, but this one I think deserves its own specific thread.
So what I’m thinking here is “Invisible Zones.” Not in a player effecting manner of course, as I can already to that with Trait Zones, but instead I’d like a piece that allows us to make it so some areas of blocks don’t render/aren’t used.
One of the main problems with Forge has always been framerate. There are a couple different things that cause framerate.
- Players (The more players there are, the bigger the framerate drops can be)
- Lighting
- Certain Blocks
- The amount of blocks. (The more blocks, the more there is to render and the more the game has to worry about).
The problem I’m looking at is the amount of blocks. Now, many Map Editors such as Valves Hammer editor allow you to set which side of the items/blocks/walls etc render. Obvious we can’t do that with forge, as Forge registers a whole block as opposed to a connection of 2-d lines.
So my idea is that we introduce a trait-zone/hill that allows us to essentially “Cut off” unused pieces of blocks during non-forge games.
For example, let’s say I had two Wall Colloseums joined with eachother at the center (one horizontal, one vertical and both on the same axis). So I put the “Invis_Zone” below the horizontal one, and stretch it across to where the vetical wall is. If I made the Invis_Zone encompass the whole bottom half of the wall and loaded it up in a custom game, that half of the wall would not render (would appear invisible.) It would also take no effect on lighting.
However, if it would make it easier on the system, the walls could still be a solid object, but a play could not see into it.
With this, we could do a few things.
- Invisible roof to keep jetpackers in.
- Inivisible walls to block off certain areas
- Create secret ledges to secret rooms with secret weapons… (Sorry, I like adding secrets to my maps).
- Cut down on frame-rate lag/blocks being rendered
This would be a huge benefit when making maps that use a lot of blocks and as such suffer from framerate problems, and would allow us forgers a bit more lee-way when making maps.
Now obviously the Xbox-One will be a more powerful system than the 360, and seeing as how it reportedly runs 60FPS it framerate lag shouldn’t be a massive issue, but it’d still be nice to have this tool to work with when it’s needed, and it could allow us to utilise more blocks with less worry.
Preferabbly, we’d have a very large amount of these “Invis_Zones” and as they take away from the budget as opposed to adding to it, it would be nice if they were free.
So that’s my suggestion, what does the community think? Any additions, any negatives you could see from this?
TL;DR: A trait zone that allows us to “cut” bigger blocks in half when we won’t be seeing the other side. Will help with Frame Rate lag.
