I am downloading Halo 5: Forge on my laptop, looks fun and want to get all of the achievements.
For anyone who has played, or know of it:
-Do you need to be online to play it at all?
-Does it have like matchmaking/play with random people, or do you need friends who have it to play with anyone? Most of the Live community play on consoles, but not that many on Windows…

It bugs me when there is no population counter in games.
Everytime i get on Hlo 5 forge theres 2 or 3 lobbies. Usually playing with fiesta settings. You must have a nice laptop
Usually, people will play Fiesta. If there’s people online, that’s what they’ll be playing.
However. I did create a Halo 3 throwback mode on Halo 3 maps. Barely functioned, but it was better than nothing. It got a lot of foot traffic in peak hours, usually after most people end work and on the weekends.
I also strongly ugre you to rebind all Spartan abilities… Almost all of the bindings in game kinda suck.

It’s perfect for Forge itself, but it isn’t well ported. The game is way more damanding than it should considering what it offers, you have to download a ton of unused musical and vocal tracks for no reason, updates are heavy, the WinStore on PC is buggy as hell and the community on Win10 in general is basically non-existend sadly.
All reasons why I laugh when people claim “Xbox has no real new exclusive, you can all get them on PC”, jack yoink you can do on PC! Gaming population on Win10 was dead from the get-go and sois H5F! MS should really pull a U-Play and start selling their games on Steam as well as letting Win7 users on boars. Than the critics might have a fair point though. 
That said when you actually do manage to gather players it’s a blast! H5 was made for crazy modes and weird social maps: three different types of Castle War, Speed Halo, Siege, Jenga, Parkour, Prop Hunt, Ghostbusters, Don’t Breath, Slayer with only real Halo weapons on Blood Gulch, Minotaurs, Griffball and so on! H5 is the ultimate FPS party game if you got enough people to play with! It will give you a lot of headaches though and the population is almost never there if not for a hour every evening. After having to reinstall it for the fifth time due to update problems - meaning you got to download everything from the get-go mind you! - I just gave up on it.
No real matchmaking but they have a customs browser. From what I heard the game lacks from population much worse than on Xbox so that can’t be a good a thing. I don’t doubt you’ll find some games but don’t be surpirsed if you see the same people
