Halo 5 eSports Seems to be Getting Bigger

Hey everyone
I couldnt see a post about this already, but there’s an interesting article on Xbox news wire about the viewing figures for the 2017 world championship.
Seems like overall great news for Halo, I just hope this doesn’t result in even more of a focus on meeting competitive players needs over those of the much larger casual audience.
Anyway, here is the article, what do you reckon?
I’m feeling quite positive after this.

What about watch time? I wouldn’t say I watched more than 10 minutes in total.

I watch a bit here and there but never a full game. I only watched it because the servers where being so bad probably one of the worst unplayable days ever and I was wondering how it was for them.

Didn’t say exactly, but I was watching it for hours over all three days, and on the sunday I dont remember seeing the viewers below 40k the whole time I was watching, and that was just Twitch

The millions of twitter views was a tiny video that popped up which was muted that forced played for some people which likely counted as a view. Whether people actually watched it is highly questionable, but it counts as exposure I guess.

Well then they’d better have a better set-up next time… one that doesn’t include a viewing tent.

Not a good look Halo… doesn’t give a tangible “vibe” that Halo is “growing.”

What about a smaller prize pool this year? Smaller crowd turnout and the poor venue? As much as I’d like to be, I’m not convinced. I expect to see bigger things next season if “Halo is (indeed) growing.”

And see? If that’s the case… that’s a PRIME example of a company exploiting technology and fudging statistics so they can come out with a statement saying “LOOK AT US, WE LOOK GOOD! EVERYTHING IS GREAT!” …all to further corporate interests and maintain a positive public reputation.

We live in a “post-truth” society now guys, technology and systems are engineered to steer people into believing things that aren’t necessarily true. I’m not saying 343 is definitively lying here, but you have to think about these kinds of things now.

I’ve seen the stats, and I doubt they are truthful. If they showed the average watch time of each unique viewer, then I would believe them. Just so we’re clear, I dont hate the esports. I think the esports competitions are the best thing about Halo 5, as it put Halo back on the competitive map in that regard-which is very good for Halo whether or not you like competitive play.

I have to ask. Could somebody care to enlighten me why Esports is significant?

Why does every developer care so much about it these days?

Because they’re a cool, emerging form of entertainment? And hey, if you are good, it’s another way to be successful in life… Not too bad of a gig if you can pull it off.

People like competition… others are driven by it.

the highest number viewing the Halo twitch channel at once was a bit over 65k

I believe it was 71K on Twitch and Facebook had 8K.

The tournament itself was actually pretty pathetically small compared to other World Championship gaming events. Even in 343 Industries own videos you can see the “crowd” is only 4 rows deep in a small room. There have also been several articles covering the small size and lackluster turnout of the Halo 5 tournament. It’s just not what it use to be.

Yes, yes it is. Though I wonder how many would watch if there wasn’t free benefits e.g. req packs.

Wow people on Reddit sure don’t like any body posting about any thing suggesting padded figures.

I wouldn’t even -Yoink!- my self out for req packs.

I’m surprised -Yoink!- isn’t censored.

So was I kinda but I’ve made that statement before so I knew it wasn’t.

Like isn’t the shorter 3 letter word cencored. I try and see… gardening tool

yep it is and it’s a unique one too.

The concurrent viewers I can well believe, because I personally saw 70k+ at one point on Twitch alone, but the 13 million figure does seem very suspect. I would love to hear how many people watched more than 4 hours, 8 hours, etc, that would really tell you something

I would also say that eSports are symbolic in Halo simply because when Halo was a top-tier, top performing game, it’s eSports popularity was truly booming… there was also tangible growth. More sponsorships, bigger tournaments, bigger and better production every year. A good chunk of the community was playing lots of MLG custom games and doing Gamebattles online ladders/tournaments…

I was involved in that community back in the day, and will be the first to tell you, there is very little to none of that on H5 from what I’ve seen. The competitive community isn’t in the greatest of spirits (although I’d say it’s a little better than it was in H4). I haven’t seen or played in ONE competitive scrim.

Back on H3 I’d get invites to play customs or even to play on teams in online tournaments. None of that happens anymore, just invites to party up in MM. Customs are all just whack, off-the-wall game modes now. Half of them end up in MM by way of Action Sack.

If there’s one thing the competitive community pushes for in the game it is QUALITY… they understand the value of a great game, out of the box. H5 had some decent content, but notice how NONE of the post-launch DLC maps are in the HCS rotation? They are weak competitive maps. There isn’t enough open air to facilitate effective teamwork or a team-shot… flag runners can take very quick/restrictive and isolated routes and score relatively uncontested, players are confined to a set path a lot of times with limited options.

The maps look great, outside of the fact that their aesthetics are repeated from other maps, but they don’t play all that well for high-level play… and at times I’d argue at all. It’s ridiculous how campy some of these maps are. You can’t even run around a corner without a crouch camper waiting for you half the time. This de-emphasizes gun skill, and doesn’t really facilitate competitive encounters.

It’s fine to have some enclosed/tight corners on a map, but some of these maps take it way too far. Halo maps excell with open air and carefully implemented sight-lines, which some of H5 maps do pretty well.

Idk, the same level of quality in the design is just lacking in some critical aspects… in others it’s the best it’s ever been, but some nitty-gritty details and kinks need to be ironed out.
