Halo 5 E3 trailer?

So in the Halo 5 E3 trailer we see John-117 walking in a robe, presumably to keep the sand and sun out of his (damaged?) armor. He walks through a empty desert with Cortana’s AI chip to some Forerunner stuff scattered and then a Guardian awakens blowing John’s hood off his head. We see that there is a crack on the visor, which many people assume is from his fight from Locke, meaning this trailer would have to take place after Halo 5. But the crack on his visor in Halo 5 in the middle of his visor. The crack in the trailer is on the side of his visor. I’m also pretty sure he is still wearing his GEN 1 Mark VI from Halo 2 as the colour is darker then his GEN 2 Mark VI armor in Halo 5. This trailer could take place between the 8 months between Halo 4 and 5 but I’m still a little confused on the significance of this trailer and whether it is canon or not. If someone could explain the trailer to me, that would be appreciated.

Chief is wearing the same armor he wore in Halo 4/5 in this trailer. His old Mark VI GEN1 from Halo 2/3 is long gone.

The trailer is not cannon. They clearly decided to go a different direction at some point considering none of the build up of H5 actually applied to H5 itself. Also the robe he was wearing was more for just concealment so if any one from a distance saw him they wouldn’t recognize him as he was supposed to be AWOL. But seeing how in H5 they knew where he was going and why he was going there. I think they just couldn’t come up with a good enough story to match the build up so it was changed in production.

Contrary to popular belief, that was not a trailer for Halo 5. That was a trailer for Halo games coming to Xbox One, the first of which was MCC. It is obvious that some early concepts of Halo 5 were showcased in the trailer, like the Guardian and Chief’s cracked visor. However, these things were just that: concepts. And not all concepts make it into the final game. Hence why the Guardians in Halo 5 are blue instead of orange like in the trailer. While more aspects of the trailer, like the desert planet, could be seen in future Halos, right now that 2013 E3 Halo trailer is not canon.

Chief’s armor in Halo 4 is not the same as in Halo 5. The aesthetic differences are minor, but canonically Halo 4’s armor was the GEN 1 Mark VI “Cortana mod”. In Halo 5, Chief is again sporting Mark VI “Cortana mod” but it is a GEN 2 version.
