Halo 5 darker?

Lots of people have stated on these forums that 343 said that Halo 5 would be the darkest game in the reclaimer saga, but I have not found any resources to back this up. Does anyone have proof of this statement?

I think them saying “dark” is from confirmed information about the story thus far. Master Chief is questioning himself, his role, etc and it just came out of a dark ending in Halo 4 with the loss of his only companion–Cortana. Basically it’s more psychologically dark.

With the addition of Agent Locke presumably hunting him down, this could indeed be a darker Halo.

I don’t remember where they said it, but I remember reading it. Maybe a bulletin. Not sure.

I think the May 2012 issue of Gameinformer is where that phrase was said.

Master Chief won’t have his flashlight, so it’ll be dark. D:

Mmmmhmmm, here’s your answer right here no need for any further speculation.

So far, none of the sources mentioned explicitly state that Halo 5 would be the darkest (or even dark at all). There WERE several instances of 343 stating that Halo 4 would be darker, but so far I have not found anything for Halo 5.

I’m not trying to disprove the statement, I would just like to see a source for it.

But ya… I suppose no flashlights would do it lol.

I don’t remember the source because it was posted before Halo 4 release but I believe it was Frankie posting somewhere that Halo 4 would be dark and the Halo 5 would be the darkest Halo game ever made.

And here I was thinking the worst possibility was the death of a blue team member. D: Flashlight, nooooo!

Totally down for a darker game story with more night levels too.

Halo wiki pages have said this (yes, I know wiki pages aren’t sometimes reliable) since 2011.

I hope it is darker.

I can’t find it in any related wiki pages/sources, know where to look?

How odd, the source I referred to doesn’t say it any more, its been changed, but believe me it used to say Halo 5 would be the darkest chapter in the Halo series.

I hope it’s so sad it makes children cry

Ya, see this is the type of stuff I’ve found in regards to something being “darker”, and its explicitly talking about halo 4.

Also, Josh Holmes has been supplanted by Tim Longo as creative director, so that may also impact the feel of the story a little bit (not necessarily how “dark” it is though).

Based off of the escalation comics, I think you could say that the intentions/agendas of various human/alien factions/coalitions have become convoluted and uncertain (to us the observers). I think the entire universe may become darker with betrayal and new war; and by the looks of the end of issue 6,it looks like the flood are back as well.

But hey, sounds like a good time for arbiter, locke, and chief to kick some --Yoink!–

Bioshock dark.

There seems to be two layers of conversation going on here:
One is whether or not the story of Halo 5 will be ‘dark’ in nature / the philosophical sense (i.e. more evil / sin winning the battle).

The other is whether or not the physical lighting will be darker than other halos.

Personally, I thought that Halo 4 was much ‘darker’ (both in storyline and lighting effects) than all previous halo FPS campaigns. I didn’t mind the storyline being a little more evil, however I really didn’t appreciate the “over-exaggeration” of darkness that came out in the visual lighting effects, and even in the appearance of the antagonist (The Didact).

I wish that the visual designers didn’t go to such exhaustive efforts to make the ‘bad guys’ look soooo evil. They don’t need to look like they just came out of 3 years time spent in an incinerator…

The visual lighting effects was one thing I like most about the previous halo campaigns. It USED to set them apart from other shooter games like gears of war, call of duty, etc… but Halo 4 seemed to take a turn for the worst, in this sense.

My bet is Halo 5 will continue in this dark direction, and Halo 6 will ‘escape’ from this darkness. Though I’m not sure how Halo 5 is going to look more ‘dark’ than Halo 4 did… Halo 4 was pretty exaggerated.
