Halo 5 Co-op splt-screen Smartglass app

I see this topic was mentioned 2 years ago here:

Well I have a similar request. In my case I have 2 xbox’s 360’s (for me and my wife) and the sole purpose we have them is to avoid split screen games - they just look terrible compared to having to run them on separate screens. Obviously having to buy 2 copies of each game and a having to own a second box is not ideal to say the least. I prefer to have 1 copy of the game, 1 console but be given the choice to do split screen, or extend the game through the Xbox Smart Glass app on a separate device, so that Halo 5’s second player, can use the device instead of using split screen?

Thoughts?

There’s a lot of specifics that would make that pretty difficult to do. The console would have to remotely contact your tablet, or possibly even go through a network, THEN contact your tablet. There would be considerable input lag.

Would be great if 343i could do it, and I would applaud them if they did, but I simply don’t see the development resources for it being there, unfortunately. It involves remote playing, and just recently some major Xbox developer heads already “looked down upon” Playstation 4’s remote play for what I personally consider are stupid reasons, and I honestly don’t want to get into the specifics since I’ll go on a tirade.

Anyway, it seems possible, but I don’t know if the capability is built into the console to even stream like that. I’m not an Xbox developer though, so I wouldn’t know.

Thanks for the reply.

I assumed there would be an issue with input lag, but if it is all on the same home network, surely this can be kept to a minimum, or at least playable levels?

Perhaps one way of reducing the input lag is if the 2nd controller were synched with the tablet, instead of with the console.

Not sure if I am being too optimistic.

The PS4 is doing it with the Vita (in a way) and Fable Legends is doing it with Smartglass, so in theory it is possible. In practice, I’m not sure how well it would work. Microsoft should definitely run tests though.

A way forward like this could be where each player can have a different screen. Obvisously this wouldnt be cost effective, but possible to a degree.

In otherwords. Player 1 gets to use screen A and player 2 uses screen B, but they both use the same console and play on the same game, in the same match just they dont share a screen and dont have to be annoyed by menus which either player can bring up.

That’s pretty much where I was going with this. Would love to know if there has been any POC for this.

On a side note about streaming, I recall reading about Halo4 being played via a stream on a WP8 device sometime back at some MS internal tech demo. Perhaps this may already be on the cards?

A little old but, this was what I was referring to:

The articles says the cloud streaming is done with a 45ms lag. It might be less when done locally from your actual Xbox One, but even at 45ms, it’s perfectly couch coop playable for Campaign or Spartan Ops on secondary screens.
