Halo 5 campaign - just awful.

I’ve played all the other Halo games multiple times and loved them (though to be honest I didn’t enjoy Halo 4 quite as much, but it was still pretty decent). However, I’ve just finished Halo 5, and have to say that I found it awful for reasons including:

  1. Boring, confusing story.
  2. Locke is dull. Where was the Chief for most of the game?
  3. AI team mates I know nothing about, and still care nothing about by the end of the game (perhaps with the exception of Buck).
  4. Boring level design. Where’s the wonderful open outdoor levels of Halo 1 or 3? Too much time spent in sterile alien environments, with flat floors to maintain 60fps.
  5. Crap missions, Halo 1 was years ago but its missions are still vastly superior.
  6. Prometheans are awful enemies and somehow seem worse than in Halo 4. Whoever decided that dogs with guns in their heads, floating circles and mushroom men made exciting enemies is deluded, so to bring them back for Halo 5 is another bad decision. They’re only there as they don’t have blood (so can hit the teen age marker for sales), plus dissolve so help maintain the frame rate.
  7. Squad AI is a joke, and I wished they would stay dead half the time.

Add to that no Firefight (Warzone is a poor replacement, designed to generate income through suckers paying real money for req packs), and Arena seems to be chasing the e-sports crowd (Big Team Battle, how I miss you), and I feel that this might be the beginning of the end for me and Halo. Not even another season of Spartan Ops to help ease the pain.

I’m sure some people will enjoy Halo 5 (each to their own), but I hate it and just wanted to post something in the hope 343 hear my opinion.

amen

I disagree 100%

I disagree. This was a good story. I understood what was going on. I don’t understand the hate for this campaign!

Yeah same here, it was a bit fast paced but I had little to no trouble keeping up. The gameplay was a blast too, charging an Elite then following up with a burst of AR fire or a nice quick shotgun shell will NEVER get old. God I love these new abilities.

Also, OP, Halo CE had a superior campaign? I mean sure it was -Yoink!- good…but it did have…The Library. I can’t be the only one who still shudders at the thought of completing that solo on Legendary and not speedrunning it.

I beg to differ.

I was playing the campaign on Legendary the other night with two other people. The single AI controlled squadmate did a pretty good job of healing us when we were down. I have no complaints. I have a hard time thinking of any game where AI controlled squadmates are legitimately good, so lets not act like this is something unique to Halo.

I’ve played Halo CE campaign many many times and you think levels being played backwards counts as supior level design then your inept

  1. Ehh, started slow, but most definitely NOT boring. I thought it was fun. secondly, the story is NOT confusing. Maybe if you listened to the dialogue. I’m sure the intels help too. The story can stand on its own if you have any knowledge about Halos 1-4.
  2. So was Chief for some amount of Halo. Relax, he will be fleshed out eventually.
  3. Good for you. All of ODST was for Buck, Vale got her own book, and Tanaka got comics. They could have had more character development, but hey, you try developing 8 characters in 12 hours of gameplay.
  4. You’re joking right? The level design was just as good if not better this time around.
  5. Lol, I played Halo 1 a decent amount before launch, Halo 5 levels are just as fun albeit doing The Breaking on Legendary solo.
  6. Hated the Prometheans in Halo 4 too. But, they are a lot better than in Halo 4. You sure you know how to aim? Its pretty easy to kill all promeatheans now except warden.
  7. Whole-heartedly agree.

Warzone is great, sorry you do not know how to have fun. So you’re complaining Arena is too pro, and Warzone is too casual? Req packs are hardly required for Warzone, so calm down. You will get your own BTB playlists within a month or two.

I’m playing legendary by myself and I hate the AI. They are stupid, the marine code from CE has been slightly altered to give them life.

For me such Complains every Time feels like some people can’t deal with the Fact, that Master Chief have only 3 Mission and can’t play that their beloved Master Chief as much as they want. The Story/Campaign is amazin and best in Halo so far… so i disagree for 100% as well.

It doesn’t mesh well with the emotional climax of the saga to date.

However, there’s still hope that something in 6 will bring it all full circle.

You think the level design is poor and the Prometheans “seem worse than 4?” That’s just… Wow. Everything that is promethean is vastly superior to their previous incarnation. The weapons have been revised, are more useful, more balanced. The enemies are less bullet spongey, more dynamic, and with clearer expectations of the player. As for the level design, H5 has the some of most interesting, detailed, and vertical infantry levels in the entire series. Vehicles sections are comparable to previous entries. What are you even talking about, dude?

I thoroughly enjoyed the campaign. I can understand why people don’t like it though; it was a lore-heavy campaign, but I was able to follow everything. I feel that the mission balance between times was alright in terms of story.

Prometheans are much better in this game. Saying anything else is just silly. I thought people on forums would love how lore heavy the campaign is.

Well, I agree they aren’t very good at taking down enemies, but sometimes they can be useful.

AI are useful, when you die

I wouldn’t go so far as to say the campaign was awful. It was mostly just a bit predictable with no major memorable set pieces and horrible pacing and characterization. The levels were pretty and the fighting is solid. The exploration missions are pretty static and are a wasted opportunity in my opinion. Maybe they had bigger goals with those missions, but it was pretty obvious that whatever purpose they may have originally served was severely cut back to the point of making one question why they weren’t just another set of cutscenes.

100% disagree, especially on point 2. I’m not part of the religion you people seem to have built around the Chief and like seeing others get screen time.
