Halo 5 Beta Feedback - My experience after 2 hours

The point of the beta is to give feedback. What we like, what we don’t like. After my initial 2 hours, this is what I have to say.

About Me

I’m a long time Halo fan. I’ve been playing since CE. Started playing fairly competitively in Halo 3, which has always been my favorite. I love every Halo game, but 4 was my least favorite.

My Stats
Play time: 2h 0m
Games played: 15
Games Won: 11
Kills: 246
Deaths: 127
K/D: 1.93
Rank: Onyx 1

Weapons
So far every weapon feels both unique and useful. Smart Scope is pretty great, but I know a lot of people are going to cry foul about it being to similar to CoD.

AR: Man, it’s great to finally have a BR that isn’t total crap. It is definitely more powerful than in previous Halo games, but it still doesn’t beat the BR/DMR in most cases. Smart link reduces zooms in and seems to reduce spread a bit, but also has a decent kick to it. Definitely not good unless firing in short bursts (similar to in other games). P.S. Yeah, you’re dying from this a lot. But that is mainly because its AR spawns right now. You’ll be dying more from BRs once we have new gametypes up, I promise.

BR: Everyones favorite toy is back and its just as good as ever. The new scope helps differentiate it from the DMR. Smart scope is pretty much the same as in previous titles, it just now has an animation to go with it.

DMR: Pretty much the same as it has always been. Good for longer range than the BR and very accurate. Smart scope is the same as before, just with an animation.
Sniper: Very similar to previous snipers. I definitely think it could fire faster though, and the shoot/melee time could also be increased. Smart scope zooms in like before, with an animation.

NOTE: The BR, DMR, and Sniper all have an animation. I like this, but it needs to be a quicker animation than it is now.

SMG: Perhaps the biggest improvement to any weapon ever, the SMG is now a beast. It is really powerful, and I like that, but I think they need to limit how many they put on a map. Too many people with this weapon is not a good thing. Smart scope is what really helps differentiate this from the AR. Hipfire is really inaccurate, but smart scope really increases the spread. It makes this weapon a unique and deadly tool.

Sword: The Legendary sword on Regret is pretty good. Increased sprint and lunge makes it a powerful weapon, but when switching to it it takes some time to be able to be used. I’m hoping that the regular sword has a faster transition time.

Magnum: The magnum is similar to how it was in 4. I’m not really a fan of it though. I think it needs a buff. It may be because the AR got a buff, but it doesn’t seem as useful as before. Smart scope is a zoom, now with an animation.

Frag: The frag grenade is the same as always, except for it seems to have a new bounce reaction when other grenades go off. Still as useful as always.

Plasma: It may be because of the new movement abilities, but I haven’t found the plasmas to be as useful as before. Its hard to stick these faster targets. My suggestion is to decrease the AOE and add a very slight homing feature. Just my thoughts on it though.

Abilities
Spartan abilities are the new movement options every player has. To me, they’ve really helped to freshen up the game. They’re a lot better than AAs from Reach and 4, and everyone has access to them at all times.

Sprint: The balance they’ve found with sprint is pretty great. Every time you sprint it resets the shields cooldown. This means that you have to know when to sprint and when not to. I’ve screwed myself over a few times because of this.

Thrusters: Thrusters are another great addition. It can help close a gap, increase jump distance, and escape from grenades and enemies.

Hover: I didn’t think much of hover, and I honestly haven’t used it much. It did earn me a really awesome mid-air snipe, though, so it has its uses. It’ll be interesting to see how players use this once everyone gets better.

Clamber: I was really worried about clamber. I was worried that it would ruin the platforming elements of Halo. My fears were unfounded. The maps seem to be perfectly made to accommodate clamber, and sprint jumping to thrust to clamber creates some really cool jumps. I love this feature.

Ground Pound: So far its the most useless ability. I haven’t had any reason to use it, and it hasn’t really been used against me, at least not effectively. It’ll be interesting to see if it ever has a place in high level Halo games, but right now it seems like it could be left out entirely.

Comments and Concerns

Empire is a good map, but a little noisy. I also don’t like the inside sniper spawn. I think it would be better with sniper outside and maybe a shotgun inside.
I really want to be able to see more stats in game.

The announcer constantly yelling and the medals always popping up is distracting. I think they should keep all of the medals, but only show a small portion of them in game. The other medals, such as “Perfect Kill” should be tracked and viewable in your stats, but not shown/spoken in game.

There are times when you can’t back out of a lobby and it seems to be endlessly searching. This needs fixed.

Spartan chatter is great, but needs improvements. For one, I think they should be able to call out individual Spartan IDs. That would make callouts more specific. Also, the female voice seems to be a lot louder than the male ones.

Custom controls NEEDS to happen. I want to play Bumper Jumper AND have Sprint be left thumb. Please, please, PLEASE make custom controls happen.

TL;DR

Halo 5 is a blast. It feels fresh, yet feels like Halo. It definitely needs some work, though, and I can’t wait to see how it changes over the next year. I really hope 343i keeps us in the loop on what changes and how.

Edit: Somehow my brother’s account was logged in instead of mine. My GT is Reclaimer DC, in case you want to verify that I’ve played the beta or anything.

Sorry! Won’t be too much longer! I’m sure that a lot of the feeback will be positive for the game. There are those who can’t stand any form of sprint or ADS type features, and these people are going to hate it no matter what and give it no chance. Just go in with an open mind and have some fun.

Great feedback I was thinking the same thing.

Sounds great, can’t wait to get in on a few sessions coming this 29th. Anything you’re looking forward to see in the beta?

Thanks! Overall I’m having a blast. Can’t wait to try some new maps, modes, and weapons. I’ll update my impressions during the full beta.

I’m just trying to get my feedback out there in a coherent way that doesn’t get drowned out in all of the complaints. I hope to see others do similar feedback posts. Hopefully 343i can use it to improve the game over the year.

By the way, I’m back on my regular account now. I’m still the OP, just not on my brother’s account any longer.

I really am looking forward to trying out the round based game mode when the full beta launches. I’ve always liked no respawn modes, so I can’t wait to see how it works out in Halo 5.

I can’t get into a game. I downloaded the beta and started to play after work and haven’t been in one game. Anyone else having this problem???

I’ve played a couple of matches and I genuinely enjoy it. Sadly I’m not as good as I used to be but I still enjoy it.
I did really well in my first match having ranked up 30 odd kills with a single death or so but my last game was pretty atrocious. Again I think it comes down to lack of skill compared with some of the other people I was playing with.

I’ve really enjoyed how balanced the guns all feel. I can actually pick up anything and know I’m going to enjoy using it where as in other Halo titles, you’d generally avoid a few weapons as they were pretty awful to use.
Probably the only thing I can think of so far that is starting to pain me is the kill cam. When the game cuts to this and you’re dying alot (like I was in my last game) the music queue and the long fade in and fade out queue really slays me. I’d be okay with this if it jumped straight into kill-cam mode without the sound queue or if it was reverted back to the old Halo way of showing other team mate cams while waiting to respawn.

I’ll leave more feedback as I go but so far, I am SUPER happy with Halo 5’s Beta so far!

I haven’t had any problems. Are there any errors popping up or is MM just not working? What is your NAT?

I totally agree on the weapon balancing. In Halo 3 it was pretty much BR and power weapons only. Some will be angry about the BR not being the one and only gun (though it still is great in almost every scenario), but the fact that every gun has a purpose is great. No more throw away weapons as I like to call them.

Some people are insanely good.

Thanks for the heads up on the sprint thing. I’m just so used to it from H4 it’s going to be hard to adjust. I think all of the weapons are great, although the DMR in my opinion zooms in WAY too far right now. I can’t focus with that thing on mid-size maps, but maybe it’s just me. The SMG is, like you said, a beast, I’m thinking they will have to nerf that thing, it takes enemies out so fast. Nades have some serious bounce to them right now, it hits the floor and launches really far before detonation.

All and all, I’m excited for ranks, because I am really not that good, nor do I have friends playing the beta right now, so my party is always all over the place and I end walking into 3 of the enemies just trying to track my team mates down.

Happy gaming. I will have more feedback in the future.

Great post!

I like the DMR as is because it makes it longer range than the BR, which helps make them unique. That said, they are kind of hard to use at times on the Midship remake.

As for the SMG, I don’t think it needs to be nerfed, but it needs to be treated more as a power weapon. There should really only be one per map IMO. While powerful, it is really inaccurate when hipfiring, but deadly at even medium range when smart scoped. This is its primary weakness though. As long as you can get a shot off while at medium range, chances are they can’t kill you. If you can’t get that shot off to descope them you’ll be dead pretty damn quickly though.

Haven’t played yet, but from what I see so far:

  • Ground Pound should be removed from the final game. Useless and doesn’t fit into the competitive type of game 343i is aiming for. Plus it ruins crouch jumps, depending on control scheme.

  • Charge is going to make me rage a lot because it’s almost like people having a sword and killing me with one from a distance beyond the normal melee.

  • SMG is the new SAW.

  • Prophet’s Bane has to have a different trait bonus from movement speed increase. It’s going to make playing Truth unbearable with the Sprint+Thrust combo. Like perhaps just makes your shield recharge 50% faster instead. The movement speed increase bonus is atrocious.

  • Thrust’s distance should be nerfed by about 20%. Like Halo 4’s MP distance.

> Certainly not useless, and clamber does the latter anyway.

> It does dominate if used right, yeah. But remember that you can thrust away as well. Did you see the Optic vs Str8 Rippin match? An epic backwards-thrust bulltrue right there.-
>
> Thrust’s distance should be nerfed by about 20%. Like Halo 4’s MP distance.
> Whats bad about it currently? Seems fine to me.

Biggest issues are bumper jumper Left Trigger should be zoom and Right Bumper throw grenade.
Also why can’t you thrust and then melee?
Besides those two gripes I’d be very proud of this competitive game!

I agree with pretty much all points made here,
there is a good balance in weapons and abilities and the gameplay is as competitive as halo’s ever been.
I didnt notice much at first either buut after a while using it, the sniper probably has a little too much aim assist and could be toned down a little, other than that the sniper is a beast
however, i quite like the announcer lol and i think the pistol is perfect, ive come out on top in a whole bunch of pistol vs AR battles
I really like the bro down at the end of the match too, lol

My issues so far are minor things such as.
When watching a kill cam, the action text should still display, showing who’s killed who along with assist/kill from the grave medals. Unless you skip the kill cam you dont really know if you killed that guy you threw a nade at before you died etc.

SMG for me feels a tad OP, not massively, but i think it needs a small nerf imo

No one to browse medals after a match (not sure if this is just for the beta though)

Honestly, imo, the game could ship like this and i think most people wouldn’t have a problem with it

Right now my biggest issue it the sniper, it seams much easier to get snapshots than before.

Like with any game I only like it then I’m playing good (which is kinda rare) and really hate the game when I’m playing terrible. So for the most part I hate it.

The AR needs a heavy reduction to its range and needs damage fall off at a shorter distance
I’m fine with its damage output but the range on the thing needs to be toned down
