Halo 5 Beta Feedback (after Ready up live footage)

You guys have gotta tone it down with the narrator. And I like your trying to remind people that don’t know: “power weapons are good” but ten reminders in ten seconds is excessive.

I like the inter communication that happens automatically between players. Maybe there should be an option for trash talk from enemy team? (Gears Style, in good fun)

Also the bro moment victory screens: not sure how I feel there. So basically, tone it down, good job, and IDK! (For Now)

After seeing the RUL footage, I am trying not to get too excited about playing. IMO it is looking really solid.

I am happy with the chatter of ‘power weapons in 30’, ‘power weapons in 10’, ‘power weapons on map’. This brings Halo CE, pro-style power weapon timing to the masses. It will create teamwork with random teammates who have never played together. I think its perhaps one of the best ideas they have ever done… so long as people have the choice to turn it off.

  • The automatic callouts are a revolutionary game changer IMO. Probably won’t be long before we see other games doing the same, like what happend with auto regen health.- The victory scenes are not my style, but it’s not a big deal.- The gameplay seems faster, which I like.- It looks more arcade-y, hard to describe. Lots of flashy stuff grabbing your attention. Given how big e-sports is becoming, this will make gameplay more fun to watch.- The gamemode that’s like paintball looks like a blast.- The energy sword is excessively bright and large when wielding it, making it difficult to see enemies (maybe this is done on purpose for balance?)

It looks like COD: AW. I don’t like how they basically did away with jump-crouching. I don’t like how they sped everything up by like 2X with all the abilities. Everything is so fast and there is so much going on that you’ll rarely have a straight up duel. Strafing looks pointless now. I wish they would fire whoever keeps making this game more like COD with each release.

It doesn’t matter, if people like this new styled gameplay then they can have it. I’ll probably just stick to MCC for a couple years (assuming they fix it.)

I like what i’ve seen so far. I think the victory celebrations are fun. lets the winning team show off their armour. I think there should be more than one though. watching the same one over and over might get tiring.

Wait, when is the Halo 5 Beta coming out? It looks really fun!

Some general changes that are fairly obvious without playing it.

  • Tone down the number of ‘announced’ medals, I can live with simply getting the medals, but lets lower the number of participation medals.- Kill audio hitmarkers, kill them with fire. They are just noise that obscures otherwise solid sound design, don’t even bother with a toggle, just get rid of it.- Spartan callouts are fine, but they do need a toggle for the times when you are actually playing with players who communicate.- Dial back the end game bro-downs, a bit, I’m surprised one of them didn’t grab their crotch.

Why do so many people see the strafe-dodge packs and stabilizers and think immediately, ‘CoD:AW has it thus Halo is becoming CoD’? If y’all will recall, Halo 4’s opening cinematic showed a thrust-brake on the back of the Spartans and Thruster Pack was in Halo 4 as an AA. This game came out before Advanced Warfare was announced and Halo 5 has probably been in-dev since before Halo 4 released. It feels like people just want an excuse to cry ‘CoD! Ohnoes!’

So, from the RuL footage I’ve seen, I like a hell of a lot of what I see. Things I like being:

  • Thrust/Strafe/Stabilizer packs- Visible health and recharge delay meter for shields- Sprint pausing recharge timer- No Jetpack! Hurrah!- Placed weapons on map without indicators of where they are- No loadouts! Also hurrah!- General feel/pacing of game- Clamber/Ledge Grab. Holy crap, this has been a long time coming- Map-specific unique power weapons- Callouts. Makes Spartans feel more alive.- More medals- Betrayals seem possible again due to Spartans griping. ['Watch your ‘nade spam!’, ‘Hey! Same team!’]- Maps all seem to have some notable vertical space in them
    Now, there are some things I don’t like so much, or think could use some tweaks. I will elaborate on the things I don’t like for helpfulness and such. These are (mostly) small things, but I felt need to mention them.

Spawn Issues: Several times, I saw him either get killed by someone spawning behind him in fairly close proximity, or more often saw him spawn in the same room as an enemy. This could be annoying from both ends, either if the person in the room had a mid-close range power weapon and killed him immediately or, as seemed to be the case more often, managed to kill the enemy that wasn’t immediately aware he was there because he never entered the room. This just means the algorithm for detecting nearby enemies to choose where you spawn is a bit off. Should be a fairly easy fix, so not too fussed.
Power-Weapon Platforms: Something about that irks me in an indescribable way. I really like the ‘Sniper spawning in thirty!’ thing, but I feel a bit patronized by it pretty much going, ‘Hey! This is where the sniper spawns! Hey, you! Look! Power weapon’s gonna be here!’ I feel like I should still need to figure out where the spawn is. I mean, Midship, obviously, everyone knows the damn sword spawns on the bridge, but still…It’s a minor gripe I suppose, but something about that hologram constantly announcing where it’ll be rubs me the wrong way in a powerful manner. Maybe cut it back to just the unique, map-specific ones like Prophet’s Bane?

Medal Callouts: I don’t understand the logic behind some of them. At one point, he gets an Extermination and it doesn’t announce it, but Hat Trick (which I still cannot figure out the parameters for unless it’s 3 headshot kills in a row), Perfect Kill, possibly Reversal and maybe a couple others that are not nearly as noteworthy get vocalized.

Personally, I’d like just ‘Spree’ type medals (X kills/splatters/assists/etc without dying), Multikills and rarer ‘feat’ medals like Skyjack, Busted, Extermination, Showstopper, etc to get voiced. I can concede Perfect Kill, but some of the others just sort of clutter the ears. About how Reach had it would be perfect. At the moment, it feels kind of like Reach’s Beta, where pretty much all the medals had announcements and it just got silly. Between this and Spartan callouts, there’s just too many voices on the field.

Hit-Marker Sounds: Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind hit-markers. I do not, however, like them to have a sound. It just adds more audible clutter and when you’re using an automatic weapon it does get a bit annoying. If it needs to make a sound, please tone down its volume, give it a required range to kick in (because I don’t need an audio cue to know I hit someone with my AR at mid-close) or nix it entirely and make ‘shield hit’ and ‘HP hit’ sounds a little louder, but still scale with range. Hit-markers in Halo 4 were all they needed to be to be useful: a visual cue around the reticule.

Smart-Scope with Automatics: I haven’t played with/against it yet, but like the holo-pedestals for power weapons, something about this rubs me wrong in a way I cannot properly describe. It just feels… unnatural or out of place. The SMG is an exception and would also be more unique if the AR didn’t have Smart-Scope, since I saw it has that little sight on top.

Now, for the things I’m just a tad concerned with, which are minor and of which there are only a couple.
Armor Customization: I know, this is a beta. H3 had no Elites and Reach was missing several slots in beta that it had in retail. I am however slightly worried after Master Chief Collection. However, the picture of ‘Aviator’ featured Contoured legparts and GV Locking gauntlets, so I’m really hoping this indicates intention for full customization in retail and they simply threw some armor sets together because the arm/leg/chest/shoulders parts of the system weren’t properly coded yet as separate entities and they didn’t want to simply force everyone to wear Recruit.

If this is the case, you’re awesome for making sure we have some form of customization in beta, 343i. I just hope this isn’t going to regress slot-wise. You know us well enough (I hope) to know we love the hell out of our mix ‘n’ match MJOLNIR. Now, if all the reports I’ve heard were wrong and we’re NOT limited to Helmet and Body, please smack me in the face and inform me of the truth!

Weapon Variety: Again, with it in mind this is a beta and they’re focusing on 4v4 Arena Classic style, it’s a tad distressing I haven’t seen or heard any alien weapons (save one LightRifle in a promo image), and some of my UNSC high-end favorites from Halo 3/Reach/4 are seemingly absent like the StickDet, Splazer, Rockets and Railgun.

I trust these thing are absent simply because they’re not on the presented maps spawn tables, but again, mentioning everything.

  • I heard a Spartan say “Watch your friendly fire!” after taking a direct grenade from a team mate, yet he wasn’t damaged at all… (even surviving an enemy melee iirc). So I think we may have to wait and see.

  • I agree. In my opinion Halo Reach was the perfect blend of medals and announcements. Medals like “Close call” were in there, but were thankfully not announced.

I also had to just laugh when I saw him get a melee kill, got the medal “Brawler” and it had an announcement for it… PLEASE tell me single melee kills are not accompanied by announcements now!?

I’d like to be able to take more damage before I die so please fix that.

Hey there, halo fan since halo 1.

This feedback is based on first impression 10 games played so far, and this is what i’ve come up with.

After the release of Xbox One, Halo was just abandoned and transitioned into Titanfall and currently Destiny, with a slight now and then of COD: AW. On that note lets get right to it.

I think it’s great how you’ve introduced all these new abilities like the new version of the thruster pack and the ADS system. However if you’re gonna go down that road you need to bare in mind that many people who will be going back to halo (like me) will be reluctant to let go of those control schemes they’ve spent countless hours getting use to playing Titanfall, Destiny and perhaps COD where double tapping the jump button for a boost or a thrust is just a standard feature (just like ADS) amongst the FPS community. Now you may use the argument of “Oh they’ll just get use to it, shouldn’t take them that long” and you might be right but the problem with that is some gamers won’t want to keep taking the time to switch between these 2 standards and will be forced to pick one or the other where as if you allow for that control scheme then you’re covering all your angles.

  • I recommend joining thrusters with jump as the second tap and keeping clamber on it’s own, if you need to thrust without jumping then use left analog click for thrust strafing just like COD: AW.- Personally I use bumper jumper in all my FPS games with the exception of COD of course because it isn’t available (that being one of the reasons why I barely play it). With the introduction of ADS being present with bumper jumper in Titanfall and Destiny perfecting that combo in my opinion, the closest control scheme to those I found in the beta was Fishstick. I recommend having a control scheme that mimics the bumper jumper of Titanfall and Destiny where ADS is on the left trigger and jump is on the left bumper. Essentially all you’re doing is detaching jump from clamber on “A” and joining it to Thrusters on “left bumper” in the Fishstick control scheme.My next recommendation is of course I don’t even need to tell you the importance of bringing back system link. All successful multiplayers out there are tailored to E-SPORTS and sorry but relying on cloud computing and shared servers for levelling the playing field is still a very long way away. Without system link the growth of gaming lounges will suffer in which E-SPORTS and in turn the industry will follow suit. Halo was the game that brought about the system link era on consoles in which tournaments could thrive and gaming lounges could be considered viable businesses, please don’t take that away.

All in all it’s a fantastic game, excellent frame rate, great flow of movement, cool visuals and AI communication, high fun factor, gameplay and much more. Get rid of that lame outro scene, the mini map should definitely be on the top left for easier glancing and the melee has no lunging parameters whatsoever.

“Brawler” is for getting a certain amount of Melee kills I think (not sure how many though). Getting a Melee kill is simply called “Melee Kill”.

Assault rifle and SMG are so -Yoink- powerful especially when zoomed in and sword is too bright (probably for balance).

i think this game is out of this world it could possibly be the best halo ever if the campaign and narrative is anywhere close to what i have have played on this beta,the only two things i want added to halo 5 to improve it would be 1080p and dual weilding other than that its amazing well done 343i.

The feedback i’m about to give is from playing around 15-20 games. I want to play the game more as more maps and game types come out, but here’s my feedback at this point in time

  • First things first, smart scope is a cool twist on the Halo aiming system. However, I don’t like how Assault Rifle’s become very accurate with little to no penalties. The gun that was Short-Medium range can now become a Medium-Long. There has been many times where an AR has finished off a Spartan quicker at Med-Long range than a BR has. I personally feel that you don’t need a BR whilst you have the choice of Smart Scope AR, which in turn diminishes the whole point of a BR. The solution i think is to either remove AR Smart Scope or make it so the player has to burst the AR for accuracy while in Smart Scope.- I feel the Sniper zooms in too much for first zoom. 5x is too much for first zoom, maybe 4x?- I genuinely like the communication between Spartans in game. It was hard to believe that Spartans never spoke while in a team. I feel they need ‘gruffier’ voices though, i hope those shown in the beta are just placeholders.- I don’t know if it’s a matter of opinion, but i don’t like the ending animation of your team fist bumping and going pro-bro. Maybe instead the team can act cool in their victory with weapons in hand. The bro thing is a little too much IMO.

I will give more feedback as the beta continues

I have been playing Halo since Halo: CE was released, i joined the multiplayer community from Halo 3 onwards and have enjoyed the ride.
I am also a QA Tester in training, so i hope my opinion and feedback along with many others in this forum will be noticed, whatever it may be.

Other than that, i think you guys have took a solid step in making us feel more ‘Spartan-like’. This game feels close to what a Spartan should be capable of.

First, individual performance should be taken into account when determining how much EXP I should lose or gain. I’m not saying I should gain even if I lose, but if I lose a match with a 6.0 K/D ratio I don’t see where it’s fair to punish me to the same extent as my teammate who had a 0.6 ratio.

Second, control customization. If Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel can let me fully customize my button and stick layout why can’t Halo?

DESCOPE

Yes we wanted this back, Yes it IS back BUT. now there is a delay on when you can scope back in, the sniper rifle already has a horrible scope time, and furthermore since a single bullet from the ar, which is now a PINPOINT accurate weapon will de scope enjoy getting kicked out of scope the second your in it now.

RECOIL

Why were recoil mechanics added to ALL guns? Did the scientifically enhance super soldiers wearing 1000 pound power armour skip on arm day, and if these weapons recoil for them, they must be IMPOSSIBLE for a non augmented soldier to fire right?

SMARTLINK SCOPE

“Its not ads” Except it IS ads, especially on the ar, which is now a valid threat at all ranges,it’s a starting weapon which is s’posed to be a weapon that will work until you come to a better weapon, right now it is a jack of all trade, master of none, it presents far to good of a threat against all other weapons, including the sniper rifle (giving the pinpoint accuracy and ability to descope on one shot) if smartlink is s’posed to be a new animation for the existing zoom it should in NO way modify the way a weapon works, zooming in a weapon does NOT make it more accurate, so WHY does it make the SMG and AR more accurate?

NETCODE

The net code for the beta is horrendous, i mean, seriously, it makes battlefield 4 look good, i should not get hit by a single ar shot, and suddenly die in .2 seconds later, Halo has always been a game where skill prevail, where even if you get shot you CAN turn around and present a valid threat to your attacker, right now, you might as well start thinking about your next move if you get shot first, cause you will die.

KILLTIMES

Is it just me, or are kill time SIGNIFICANTLY faster then even halo 4(which had the fastest kill of all halo) this is NOT a good thing, halo has always been fast pace action, but slower pace combat, where combat takes several seconds to complete with non power weapons, this made power weapons all the more important for their ability to instantly kill, it also allowed skills to prevail over reflex, which set it aside from other shooters. While not 100% accurate, i have always classified halo (and other FPS) into two types, Twitch shooters (where first shooter generally win and twitchy caffeine drugged sugar excited children have the advantage) and skill shooters (where a player skill will allow them to overcome all obstacles) halo 5 FEELS like a twitch shooter, and not a skill shooter.

SMART SCOPE +PRECISION WEAPONS

Ok got smart scope out of the way, this is feedback numeral 2, smart scope on precision weapons. Namely the visual obscurity that happens when scope on precision weapons (ala the DMR) and the time to scope on the sniper rifle, the sniper rifle should not take a half a second to scope in, this makes a logical sense if it was a “ADS” first person shooter where they need to bring the scope to the shooter eye, but it’s not its the so called smart scope which is the camera linked to the spartan HUD, when we press the button, the change over should be instant.

HIT MARKERS

Now i asked this back in halo 4, but what is the point of visual hit markers? What purpose does a hit marker serve? Seriously 343 can you answer that? a player should know when they score a hit with a gun, i mean they had to aim the gun at the player and pull the trigger,didn’t they? the ONLY thing i see hit markers doing, is turning explosives into a echo location device ? Allowing you to throw it around blind corners, wait for the explosion and if you get a hit marker, it means there is a enemy behind that corner. I simply don’t understand the fascination with hit markers in this generation of games, and i find they make no sense logically, canonically, and game play wise. Furthermore, this is a exorbitant waste considering shield flare (when successful hits) has been in game since the beginning, there is ZERO reason to have hit markers other then having it because competing games have it.

SEARCH TIMES

Game search times are WAY to long 'Nuff said.

LOCKED INTO SEARCH MENU

At no time should a game lock you into the search for player menu, until a game is finalized with two even players, players should be able to back out of that menu.

KICK TO MENU

There are several annoying “kick to menu” errors while searching for a game.

FRIENDLY FIRE

This needs to be enabled, friendly fire has been a staple and game play influence feature since halo 1. It significantly impacts the way halo is played because of the risks associated with mindless grenade spam, and shooting. It needs to come back, do NOT i say again DO NOT continue to hold player hands by giving them no FF, and other noob friendly design as game play decisions.

WEAPON PICKUP DIAGRAMS

Please return weapon pickup diagrams, so we now what weapon we are picking up at a glance, instead of having to read a sentence to find out, already had it where i picked up the WRONG weapon from a enemy kill (he dropped Prophets bane, and a BR, i ran over the sword to get it and ended up getting his stupid br instead)

GRENADES

Fragmentation grenades deal their damage by creating a hailstorm of small metal fragments, they do NOT deal their damage with a explosive shock wave, a frag grenade entire explosive force can be contained by a single body on top of the grenade, in no case, nor circumstance should a frag grenade be able to LAUNCH a stationary spartan airborne, currently this affect is hugely exaggerated in the beta.

AIM ASSISTANCE

This is something that would require further testing, and will be controversial, but for any console shooter a minor degree of aim assistance is necessary given a game pads inferiority in accuracy compared with a mouse and keyboard. whether halo 5 has to little to too much aim assistance will need to be tested in a controlled environment.

CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT

We need custom games in this beta, for reasons stated above, and to properly test many more technical details.

KILL CAMS

While kill cams are are pretty cool, that is NOT the case when they in inaccurate, unless the accuracy can be improved (to where when you are killed by someone it actually shows them AIMING at you and killing you) these should be removed.

VICTORY ANIMATIONS

The S-4 are recruited adults generally from special forces branches of the UNSC, why do they act like frat boys and college football stars after a victory? while i am not against victory animations, the current ones just makes no canonical or logical sense.

MEDALS

Medal are a mark of achievement, why are they so abundant? i have played around 20 games, gotten around 150 kills, i have something like 500 medals. halo 2 has 23 medals in multiplayer, halo four has over over 178 medals, please put medals in for for actual marks of achievement, medals should be something that are award for skills, not handed out like candy for every other action (babies first step MEDAL, baby first shot MEDAL, baby’s first death MEDAL!)
