Halo 5 Art Feedback

Something that made older Halo games so beautiful was the fact that they looked vibrant and alive. It was a place you wanted to be in because they were so beautiful.

While Halo 5 looks good in terms of graphics, it does not look good in terms of art. There is nothing wrong with the art itself but the way it looks is bad. The game does not feel alive at all and does not look vibrant, it looks GENERIC. This is a MAJOR problem since it immediately makes the game less enjoyable to watch and even play, yes it makes the game less enjoyable to play.

A game needs to look good, different and unique but Halo 5 does not look that different from other shooters that take place in the future. Everything is so shiny and lights and lightning effects are too bright, especially the sun. The game lacks color and beautiful skyboxes making it look even more generic. This is a major problem and can influence the longevity of the game. We do not want another Halo 4 were the population drops extremely fast.

How to make Halo 5 beautiful?
First of all, the shine on a lot of objects needs to be heavily reduced. This is the biggest reason why the game looks generic. Maps need to look special and unique and by making everything shiny you reduce the differences between the maps because the differences in art is reduced. It’s a lot more beautiful when you can actually see the details on the objects and textures instead of looking at a shiny object.

Secondly, the brightness of the sun needs to be toned down to remove the disadvantages in gunfights caused by the sun. The brightness of the sun also prevents us from looking at the sky which may sound weird but it’s not. Halo games always used to have beautiful skyboxes but I haven’t seen any of those yet.

Thirdly, the maps need more colors to distinct themselves from each other and to make them look more vibrant. It’s a sci-fi videogame, why on earth should it look more realistic? Other games are trying to be realistic but Halo never did this and this should not be the case with Halo 5 either. I really hope 343 is going to add more colors to the maps to make it look more unique and vibrant.

And finally, the game needs to feel alive. What I mean with this is that I want 343 to put their heart and soul into the artdesigns like Bungie did. Bungie always makes beautiful games that feel alive. Destiny is a beautiful game, it has beautiful skyboxes, beautiful maps with each map look very different from each other and the game has beautiful skyboxes. The game may have less colors than a game like Halo 3 but it still looks pretty vibrant. I hope 343 can learn from the way Bungie designed and implemented their art into their games so we can have a beautiful, vibrant and alive universe in Halo 5 that we want to be in for atleast 3 years until the next Halo game.

EDIT:
Art needs to be consistent, when play Halo 5 it needs to remind me of older Halo games as well, especially Halo 4 in terms of art since Halo 4 is the first part of the Reclaimer saga. The problem though is that a lot of things in Halo 5 look too clean and too modern (it looks too much like the real world which is a bad thing since Halo is a sci-fi game).

Halo used to be described as ancient because of the way the art looked. This is not a negative comment but a very positive way. Ancient does not mean it’s outdated but that has an ancient feel/look when you are playing the game and looking at the art and environments. The environments and maps should not look modern and shiny at all, they should ancient.

All of this is super important, but I think the point you made about 343i putting the utter immensity of their heart, soul, and passion into the game like Bungie did takes the cake. The environment and comradery in the developer studio is just as important to the end product as the design decisions themselves are because that vibe is literally the perception/headspace the game is designed in. The great vibe and passion we experience in the final game will reflect the great vibe and passion of the studio. It’s like a legendary band like Zeppelin; their music was only as good as it was because the musicians felt such passion and comradery between each other and their vision.

Unlike Zeppelin, the amazing and unique thing about 343i is we, the fans, are literally a part of the development process. That’s an amazing and unique thing and it only works because Halo has established its culture-shifting identity for over a decade. The Sprint was a really great way to share the vibe and process of the studio with us and I hope we see more of that more frequently.

And because we have some say in the development process, and even though 343i has the final say, consider yourselves to be a part of the band. Like in any relationship, let’s strive to do our part to make it a good one. That means we’re gonna have to suck up the negativity…but ya know, it’s better there. In order for us to best do our part in this relationship, everything we do we should do with a strong sense of community and connection. Positive vibes are the default, but it doesn’t mean we can’t be critical when we need to be.

I wouldn’t write this if I didn’t feel strongly connected with you guys, even if I don’t know any of you. It feels good to be in a community like this and like any community, it works best when good, mature connections are strong on every level.

Personally, I think 343 did put their heart and souls in Halo 4’s designs. Granted, I thought the Halo 4 Forerunner designs were overly-chromed lightshows and I do enjoy more ancient looking Forerunner aesthetics with nature slowly creeping in, Guardians serves as an example. I get why they went that way though, Requiem wasn’t quite like the Halos and previous environment. I don’t know if I can really agree with Destiny having an edge. It looks great, but I never got the feeling it was a living world. Neat setpieces, but I never got a sense of awe from them.

Agreed. I love the art design of halo 4 ANd the chromed forerunner structures did leave a little to be desired but then again take was all the flora in previous halos and you would have something similar i would assume.

Also agree about destiny it was very lack luster in the universe it was within the story was non existent and really graphically it wasn’t all that fantastic. Id argue halo 4 did a much better job(most levels)

H2A has the perfect art style. Halo 5 looks like a JJ Abrams movie with all the lens flare and tinted colors.

Lol the JJ Abrams style was exactly what I was thinking. But I like it a lot! So it’s ok to me lol. I do like H5 visuals already more then H4. IMO Dawn, the first level, and the ship…just so much gray, didn’t like it much. But it wasn’t the whole game either.

lol I know that Realism Is a taboo word around here But halo 4 felt so Visceral, The visuals are a major part of that. really I think halo 5 does and even better job then Halo 4 so far. Slight tweaks in texture/ shades and color would make things clearer for players

Thank you for this, I truely believe 343 has a lot of passion for Halo and will put their heart and soul into the game. I really felt the passion they put into Halo 4 eventhough it failed to succeed as an Halo game. The Sprint was indeed a very good way to show their passion and I hope to see more of it as well. The Halo community is an amazing community if you leave out the 24/7 haters.

I really enjoyed the Halo 5 beta but I want the full game to be better with a much longer longevity and that’s why I stay critical without insulting anyone. As a fanbase that is offered the opportunity to help to make the game better you have to stay friendly and respectful to get the developers attention and respect. Bashing 343 for no reason is not the way to go and will not help to improve Halo.

They did indeed put their heart and soul into Halo 4 and I hope they do the same with Halo 5. Halo 4 wasn’t ugly at all but it was just a bit overly-chromed like you said and this is the same with Halo 5 only it shines even more. We need less shine and more color.
