How do you think the player should unlock armor? I personally liked Halo Reach’s system of credits, but I also liked how Halo 4 just gave you armor as you ranked up. What I didn’t like is having to play certain gametypes to get a set of armor in Halo 4. So how do you guys want it to work in Halo 5?
I agree with the way Halo Reach armory is set up making something to earn and achieve while like Halo 4/Halo 3 awarded armor is available. My example would be achievements like:
- Campaign Solo Legendary (Mk. VI Armour)
- Campaign Cooperative Legendary (Mk. V Armour)
- Spartan Ops Solo Legendary (Scout Armour)
- Spartan Ops Cooperative (Recon Armour)
- Firefight Endure Vidmaster Challenge (ODST Armour)
Then others can be bought like the experience system in Halo: Reach…
My other ideas for innovative new stuff would be:
- Sangheili point defense gauntlet (the elite energy shield)
- Sangheili energy stave
- Promethean hardlight blade arm
I would just like the base armor skin of every variant to be immediately unlocked for all users at the start of the game. Other armor skins can be unlocked through achievements and such so completionists still have something to boast after earning while casual gamers and people who barely get to play Xbox can at least be satisfied with the armor variant they want.

Sounds like a good idea. Although there would need to be some difficulty to unlock the base armours as well. So maybe like the Halo 4 system where you can unlock the armours from levelling up. I know this goes against the whole “don’t play often” casual gamer ideal, but this would make casuals actually want to play the game more.
And then we have the awesome looking skins for the completionists.
Armor should be unlocked through ranking up, doing (non-redundant) challenges, and by earning achievements, but then bought in the Armory. After the initial unlock and purchase, you can buy any skin you want for it that you have unlocked.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m not really into the whole armor side of Halo (I still use the default armor on 4) but I personally preferred Halo 3’s system. It seems to me that Halo 3 had a limited choice of armor but with each variation having an interesting and unique look. The way I see it, Halo 4 has a wide variety of armor but a lot of it looks either very similar or plain over the top. As I said earlier, I’m not really into armor but in Halo 3 I knew the difference between literally every piece, whereas in 4 every piece either looks the same or just looks silly.

I disagree. Achievement and challenge related armors should always be given. If you want to implement in in-game currency for unlocks like in Reach, it should only be for the items that are unlocked by leveling up. After all, the whole point of the achievement was to go above and beyond. Rank-ups are commonplace occurrences and I don’t mind tying an additional criteria like credits for such unlocks. But getting the assassination mastery commendation is an impressive enough feat to simply be given the award.
I would like to see more customization in Halo 5, like the 2-3 accessories for each helmet that Reach had as well as the grenade/ammo pouches. For the most part, the Reach armor felt like it had more utility, like it was actual combat gear. So much of the Halo 4 armor is so heavily stylized that it just doesn’t feel like it would stand up to a fight the same way previous incarnations of the Mjolnir had. And considering humanity is very clearly at war again, better gear is definitely called for.
