Halo 5 and why I feel cheated (Single Player)

Warning, straight up copypasta from another thread.

Introduction: I’ll be honest, Halo 5 and Star Wars Battlefront were two of my most anticipated releases and being tight on funds I still managed to squeeze both games into my budget, now, after playing both games I am utterly disappointed in both 343 and Dice, two studios that know how to get -Yoink- done yet what is put before me is a mass of crap under the disguise of a quality game. Both these companies need to get their crap together. Therefore, the only lie I will call them on is the quality of effort they put into it, that is all.

General beef: What the -Yoink- is with the huge reuse of Warden Eternal in campaign? Once is enough and that fight sucked. The biggest kick in the -Yoink- was the hype train building up on an epic showdown between Locke and Chief, I had very high expectations of this encounter but when we finally have it 1, a cutscene steals the glory of that fight from the player and 2, it was so pathetic and short it left a real bad taste behind, there was no substance to match the hype train, c’mon really writers? Master Chief, who has been the series main character got demoted to a plot asset, I was not happy about that, not to mention Blue Team and their long overdue appearance into the video game media being nothing more than a plot asset is unacceptable in my opinion.

Regarding Osiris and Blue Team: The game essentially forced Osiris on the players, not like how Halo 2 introduced the Arbiter, we were treated to a very healthy dose of both assets. If you look at how the Osiris levels play and the Blue missions play there is a significant difference. For example, on Osiris missions you have the tracker which lights up nice lore rich recordings that help fill small plot points so you are encouraged to slow down as you move through the areas. With Blue team you have no such device, yes, you have recordings in those missions too but in all honesty does anyone really want to spend more than a reasonable amount of time trying to locate them? Chances are no, I’d rather just push forward and continue blasting meatbags and get to the next cinematic. Bare in mind I am speaking as if one is playing the game for the first time.

Conclusion: Bringing up Halo 2 again, there was accomplishment despite being left hanging, this game, there’s no satisfaction, not even the slightest. I get that Halo 5 is meant to lead into something bigger but the amount of “plot meat” here is the culmination of a novel, yes, a novel. I would have rather had this game be a book than a $60.00 download.

Desired improvement: Please consider implementing more player involved events such as what you did with Didact and his final moment(though minimal control it was) so we may feel the satisfaction of victory or at the minimum the satisfaction that our effort was not for nothing.

P.S. To Monitors: I don’t know what caused that other thread to be locked but I do feel as though what I posted there can be created into its’ own thread, if there’s a problem with what I just did I would like to discuss it in private granted I know you don’t have to give me that privilege. Thank you.

Yes, thanks for posting this. I have not been told why my thread has been locked. I never attacked or bashed 343, there was no flaming or anything. It was a neutral post. There was a troll, but he eventually straightened up. Furthermore, that troll was reported. Genuine discussion had just started and then it was locked. I have received messages from disappointed members, and they see this as suspicious.

OP, once again I agree with your points, and this is the great article that I had in my thread, a great read for anyone.

Article here

I would link the other thread, but I’m not allowed to. However to summarise it- everything they claimed to part of the story, really was not, and this is shown in the above article.

My main beef with the campaign is everything it is lacking:

Campaign Theater
Campaign Scoring (FFA and Team)
Campaign Commendations
Campaign RP
Campaign XP
Legendary weapon skin unlock for beating legendary, legendary armor and helmet for Legendary Solo
The Bandana Skull (its a 343 original, why not include it?)
And the biggest of all, Campaign Matchmaking. They designed a game to be played coop, but lacking all of the previously mentioned features, its like they don’t want you to play the campaign at all. At least give us some matchmaking on Heroic so we can play and get the achievements and have the coop experience the game was designed for.

As far as the story, there are many things to be said about it. I can only give my opinion that it was enjoyable for what it is, but a let down for what it could have been and what I was expecting. I like that for the first time in a game, Chief was human and actually didn’t accomplish what he wanted. I like how the game ended the same way Halo CE started. I like the build up for a potentially epic Halo 6.

That said, Osiris was fine for one game, but I don’t really want them back. However, if they can make a very large game, like the length of 3 normal games story wise, I don’t mind playing a third as Osiris, a Third as Blue team, and ideally a third as a new team of Arbiter and Half-Jaw as long as each third will be the equivalent of their own game. Halo 5 would have benefited by having more Chief, that’s for sure.

I said this in the other thread, and I’ll say it again.

Its like me going to get a burger meal, and paying for it, then they tell me I get my fries and drink next week, for a seperate payment. Not the best example, but you get the point. It’s meant to be a full story on its own, and the sequel ties it up. E.g, halo 2-3.

I remember how originally it was announced as a new trilogy, but then they changed that to saga instead so they wouldn’t be limited to just 3 new games. Perhaps by doing that they cut some of Halo 5 to add to another game to drag out the games longer.

Either way, I agree we should have had more at launch. Free DLC shouldn’t be another way of saying that you are releasing what should have been released already, it should be actual new stuff added to a completed game. As is, its basically a way of completing the game post launch.
