The addition of ADS (Smart Scope) in Halo 5 is a big mistake on 343s part and needs to be removed before Halo 5 multiplayer is released.
Part of what makes Halo different from every other generic shooter out there is the way it has always handled zoom. Unlike other shooters, Halo players have always been able to zoom without obstructing a portion of the screen by having to aim down a gun sight. By adding smart scope, 343 has taken this inherent Spartan ability away. Why would a 25th century Spartan purposely obstruct their view by putting a gun up to their face to zoom aim when their visor zooms for them? The very nature of Halo is that when a player is zoomed they need the ability to see multiple enemies at once. By having the gun visible while zoomed it will block out a portion of the screen to the player and some enemies will be hidden by the gun. This ruins the Halo experience to a large extent and should be removed.
343 please follow all the other Halo releases and remove ADS/Smart Scope from Halo 5. At the very least make it an optional feature. If some player would like to handicap their view of the field with this feature, please dont force all of us to have to deal with this.
Why would a 26th century human empire not build a tank that goes faster than 5mph? Please don’t ever use “realism” as justification for design decisions.
I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying. I just don’t really care about the scope aesthetics. There are more important things for 343 to be focusing on.

The only justification I can think of is that the UNSC, having spent the better part of 500 years without any sort of opposing conventional army, didn’t feel the need to waste their R&D budget on heavy armour. The Scorpion was probably designed to be easy to manufacture on colony worlds with relatively primitive industry. It wasn’t supposed to actually do anything other than act as a symbol of UNSC power to uppity redneck colonists.
I’m going to tell you one thing:
1)go to halopedia
2)check up on every UNSC weapon
3)If you ain’t blind then you see all of them have either scopes or iron sights
4)UNSC ain’t dumb to put those sights on their guns just for -Yoink- and giggles and not use them
5)Both Spartans and normal humans make use of sights during cutscenes or in the books
I agree, I wonder how they got the idea to integrate this mode of sight in Halo! The Beta notices are going to be very negative, fortunately as 343 does a years in advance with the Beta.
Hotshot. Scopes and sights have always been built into the weapons but Spartans and ODST have never had to use them in game in order to zoom. The fiction has always explained this as the fact that the visor provides the zoom. So you can hip fire and still hit your zoomed target. Only UNSC soilders without visors would really need to make use of a scope or gunsight for aiming hence why they are there. Covenant weapons usually have no scope or gun sight how will these work in Halo 5 with Smart Scope? This addition will hurt the gameplay tremendously.
ADS works differently in Halo 5 than other shooters, if you are going to ignore basic differences of new nuances why even bother having a discussion about it? Its obvious you just want to rant.
I understand the differences. I’m not ranting. But that still doesn’t change the fact that at least as shown so far the zoomed/scoped view is partially obstructed by the gun. This will change how the game is played dont you think?
Yes, considering there is no mobility penalty involved, balance dictates that you shouldn’t have complete field of vision while aiming down sights. Its common sense. In fact the only Halo where you have more field of vision while scoped in is Halo 4, every other halo has the screen blacked out.
The weapons still function without ADS just the same.
Well, I would think that the smart scope is merely just an upgraded zoom feature. The reticle is still in the middle of the screen of mainly hip fire like in previous halos. It’s basically just a slight backup for tough situations. Not good enough to kill your attacker, but enough to help you get away.

Not really because de-scope is back with a vengeance. You try smart scope with the are you just get de-scoped and most likely killed. It’s merely cosmetic. I will say I do miss the old scope on the BR already but that’s about it.

No. There’s no penalty for not zooming in on the technical side, if you want to only hip fire, then do that. The screen being obscured means very little in a game which has a radar constantly providing the player information.
As for the lore, the additional sighting elements can easily be a part of the HuD and even if you don’t need to raise the rifle up for vision, you do need to steady the gun against your shoulder. Realistically any scoping bits we are seeing now are elements the Spartan has always been using (as said in the books etc.) but hasn’t been displayed.

I agree with what your say. This new “ADS” isn’t needed. Heck in the vdoc buddy himself from 343 even says it’s for looks. Well ok then why have it in the game??? Oh wait we know why, to make halo look like all the other shooters.
At the very least give us an option for that view or the “old style” view.

I agree that they should add that option but it isn’t a huge deal.
If it is only aesthetic then it looks different but feels the same.
If anything, I think it should be only for those weapons with scopes already (BR, DMR, sniper, etc). Doesn’t make much sense for the AR to have it, especially if it’s just going to zoom in on the front 1/3 of the rifle. Sidearms, I don’t see it being either positive or negative.
I will reserve my final opinion for after the beta is released however.

You’re missing the point, trying to find a reason to destroy his argument. He’s saying you need to see multiple enemies at once and ADS takes that ability away.
Chaos your statement about it not mattering because you always have use of your radar does not hold out if the zoomed enemy is out of radar range or is standing still. If gun in the screen obscures your view of them you are at a disadvantage that was never introduced to halo before. All Halo games had zoom but the rest of the screen was transparent so you could see the whole scene. This does not seem to be the case with this game.

He specifically cited Spartan lore in an attempt to bolster his argument. It’s fair game for me to turn that around on him.
As for “seeing multiple enemies at once,” please take a look at this:
You actually see MORE with aim-down-sights than you did with the scope in previous games, because in previous games there was a heavy black filter around the outskirts of your scope that hindered vision. Also, you don’t scope in constantly. You only scope in after spotting an enemy. So that argument doesn’t even make sense.

Human soldiers constantly make us of their sights in fiction:
And i’ll say one thing: hip fire is still there it’s just now that you can finally make use of sights for more accurate shots, which is no suprise at all.
Please explain how this hurts the gameplay “tremendously”?
