So I saw online that a bunch of people were finding Halo 5 action figures at target stores early. I thought they were supposed to release in around 6-8 days but apparently not. I called my local target and asked if they had them in stock, they said no. I then drove there and looked for myself and whaddya know, they had Locke, Fred, Tanaka, and the Chief (strangely, Kelly was absent as was the Athlon suit). But to be honest this post is more about the shoddy/iffy quality of this new wave of figures. Mcfarlane toys really needs to step up their quality control and double check the paints they are using. First of all, I wanted to get Fred the most, they only had one Fred in stock. And not only was his paint job sloppy, but his golden visor had a gap and chunk missing out of it. Its like whatever plastic they used broke or didn’t fit during assembly. Disappointed, I decided to have a look at the other 3 figures.
Tanaka looked alright, but the paint job to me was way off. She was an extreme shiny metallic silver color, when to my eyes in the game her armor is like a very light grey or bone color (how hard is that to get right, mcfarlane?). Then I had a gander at Master Chief, and not only was his assault rifles color way off (the top part was almost bone white) but some parts looked poorly glued together. It also looked like they went a little too crazy with the weathering/drybrushing silver to make his armor look weathered. I then had a look at Locke, which is the figure I ended up buying because at first glance he looked better. I held two up and picked the one with the more clean paintjob. But found after opening him I may have made the wrong choice, as his left leg was poorly placed into the socket. His arms have almost zero poseability, I could barely get him to hold the BR with both hands, let alone look like hes aiming it. And the right corner of his visor had a chunk missing (shoulda looked at the figure a bit harder in the store). And his right wrist was loose and wonky.
Overall not a great experience, my Halo 4 chief with his assault rifle is far superior to any of the figures I saw for Halo 5 today. Better paintjob, assembly, joints etc. plus the black wash on the chief brought out his armor detail a bit better than the other figures. I also thought the Halo 3 grunts were pretty good figures. But I am nearly tempted to call this wave a flop already, but whatever. I can’t be the only one who thinks these weren’t the best figures. What do you guys think of them?
I hope thats just crappy luck, I have them pre-ordered and at $30 each I’m really hoping they don’t skimp on the quality.
One guy got them all and posted pics of them (except for Kelly, weird maybe they’re doing a test run or they were rejects that got sold anyway)
Personally I find that McFarlane toys has really dropped off over the past 5 years or so
Their halo line for the past few years have been essentially the same character moulds with different armour popped onto them, nothing new or innovative, bit like we saw with the earlier halo figures and the movie maniacs or even spawn line of toys
Play Kai arts, Kotobuikya, NECA (they have an amazing 12" Master Chief) and there is another company currently doing Gabirel Thorne and Master Chief figures (JP Limited?) which are also quite nice
Yes McFarlane quality has fallen off quite a bit. It’s not just the Halo figures, a while ago they changed their production procedures to be more cost effective and have been struggling to reach the quality that the name became known for. It has become very hard for them to maintain a uniform look to the figures and the joints do not hold up well.
Yeah I posted in that thread as well. Their production values just aren’t as good as they once were. When yours show up, just inspect them real well before opening the packaging I guess. I would have much rather got Kelly than Locke, but oh well. NECA does make decent figures too, but I prefer action figures on a 6 inch scale as I don’t have a ton of room anywhere. I’m debating on whether I should attempt to find a good Fred or Kelly later this month, or just wait and get the new Star Wars figures (the first order stormtrooper looks awesome).

I always inspect before opening and for the most part I have had decent luck, but unfortunately you can’t see loose or crappy joints. I got a Halo 3 co-op campaign box made by McFarlane and the two elites had horrendously loose joints and Arbiter couldn’t even hold any of the weapons included as his hand was made to hold a sword.
And I really don’t know if ill buy Hasbro star wars again, the 6 inch scale range is more expensive than McFarlane figures and they are made with crappier plastic. Got a 6 inch Boba Fett (which happened to be the last as they sell really quickly for obvious reasons) and his left arm elbow joint was stuck, any attempt to unstick it felt like it was going to snap. Now he can only pose like hes gonna cook a -Yoink!- with his flamethrower.
I really want them to come out with a linda 058 figure and a male Argus (linda’s armor) version as well because I am a collector and customizer. Please halo, and mcfarlane please make these figures!
How old does a thread have to be before its too old to reply to?
Anyway I got the figures and the paint jobs were fine. My gripes with the figures are as follows
Fred and Tanaka cannot hold their DMRs due to hand size and the DMR finger guard(?) - Kellys hands are too tight and cant hold her shotgun well - Lockes arms are a little bulky and cant hold his BR with 2 hands - Chiefs left foot is a little loose and he’ll have trouble standing sometimesAlso the scaling is just a tad off, Tanaka, Kelly and Locke are all slightly taller than Chief
Otherwise they look great and can all hold the magnum just fine
Im really hoping McFarlane just makes Linda and Vale, Buck is on the way

I call them dolls sometimes because it makes me chuckle and other people smile
That may be just bad luck cause I only bought kelly so far (I will buy the rest soon) and she is in good shape. So bad paint jobs, no pieces missing, and no loose parts.
Well, I have the whole series (the whole Halo 4 line too) and I think Halo 5 Series 1 is a great start for the line. After some playing you can do many poses with them, sure Locke having more limited hips.
BUT, all of them CAN hold their weapons, yes Locke CAN hold his BR with BOTH hands. All of my figures have great paint applications and the sculpt (cast) is very nice and clean.
Is for weapon holding - I always do this little trick, I cut between the trigger finger and the middle finger and then I can nicely stick the trigger finger into the trigger guard so it looks a lot better.
Overall, I customize figures a bit so I learned few tricks here and there.
