Don’t shoot any of the covenant. Try to keep your squad distracted.

Basically stay away from him and direct your AI forward to protect him. I took the route to the right, make sure to kill the Promethians manning the plasma cannons. When you get to the last platform he becomes your friend, and talks to you.

While still tough and will probably require a few attempts, it makes it a hell of a lot easier if you have some co-op buddies. You guys can draw fire to yourselves easily and sacrifice yourselves if needed.

Make it in Co-op to prevent the team AI from killing the Elite.
