I bought the game rather excited for the Forge mode in particular, and now having I can say my high expectations were unfounded, it is very similar to Reach’s forge, with multiple steps backward from Reach’s forge if anything with all the stuff they cut out / stopped using. You now HAVE to use pieces for what 343 intended, because precision editing is gone and magnets don’t snap right if the pieces aren’t right side up. Anyways, here are my other critiques:
-No precision editing (Click in left stick to move a piece slowly)
-Magnets are glitchy and don’t work if the piece is upside down.
-Forge palates are really cluttered with un-deletable objects that constantly get in the way.
-Colosseum wall is 1/4 of what it was before.
-Brace Larges have some textures on them, when they were reach’s smoothest objects.
-No access to any substantial body of water.
-No Zooming in
-No Flying fast in monitor mode
-Flood Mode customization is really limited (Stemming from Forge, making infection custom games essentially useless…)
-Pieces with unfinished textures (Columns, Silo 2’s)
And a whole myriad of other things I won’t go into. The Forge is still a great tool to have in the game and I’m glad they added it, it’s a step down from Halo Reach’s if anything. The new maps are nice, but only Impact has enough open skybox to actually make indoor maps, and those are really hard with the tiny wall Colosseum. Don’t get me wrong though; I still enjoy it and will Forge quite a lot, but I figured I’d pitch my feedback in case someone decides to listen. Cheers!
The lack of precision placement is crazy. I like the magnet system, but not having that precise placement for angled stuff is annoying. Tried to recreate one of my maps from Reach and it took forever to get some stuff lined up.
Also i really wanted blank canvasses, all 3 of these maps have clutter you cannot delete, which really bugs me for finding a nice clean area and also having that stuff in the background is horrible.
What i wanted was either a forge world, except with each valley/area different, maybe one snowy, one sandy, one green, one barren/rocky. Failing that i hoped when they announced 3 maps, we’d get 3 blank varied maps. I hate having to build around these things, even Impacts relatively blank asteroid (away from the one ruined by that base) still has floodlights around it and very VERY poor textures on it’s ground.
If they add anything i really, REALLY want precision placement back.

I agree, plus perhaps some fixes to the incredibly restrained custom gametype system.
My main complaint is the lack of a forge world map, or any big open map for that matter. Give us something like sandbox or a map with a big enough area to do something.
lol after everyone making all that fuss over reach`s forgeworld now youre saying halo 4 was a downgrade? irony
the biggest problem reach`s forge had was a lack of variety (gray), when the single biggest complaint about something is related to how it looks then its safe to assume its pretty darn good.
now I understand how disappointed you are, but if you dont appreciate something for being good then how do you expect to enjoy something for being bad?
what Im trying to say is that despite reach`s many faults, reach actually was pretty good in certain areas.
despite how many people hated on halo reach`s campaign I personally felt it was really well done (for the most part), so when I heard people complaining about it I just laughed.
compaining isnt bad by any means but when people complain about things that are GOOD thats when I get pissed off. the more and more people complain the worse and worse the game becomes.
people really need to stop having this stupid one way view about everything. reach sucked so its forge and its single player sucked aswell, halo 3 was great so the 1-50 system was great oh and you cant forget about how AMAZING the custom games were, call of duty is garbage so anything and everything related to it is simply well… garbage.
to say that reachs forge is better than halo 4s forge is kind of ironic seeing as how YOU (halo community in general) were the one complaining about how bad reach`s forge was to begin with.

I completely agree, I too am a Forger , and I was extremely Let down. But the rest so far is good. Besides a few gamemodes missing I hope they bring back.

Meh, I like Forge because downloading a map is fast and simple. It doesn’t require you to download a 200mb map file, it’s a quick sort of deal all worked into the game well. Reach’s forge was well done and simple. It excelled at this, and it’s why Reach’s community survived so long when I predict Halo 4 will die out much sooner.

bungie and 343i are two different companies … paitence … why do you think there are updates?

The mechanics are bad. The pieces are largely better (Barring some of course, like the column on Impact which isn’t even fully textured…)
I loved forge in reach, but forge in Halo 4 is not very good. All of the details are painted on the pieces and they have no texture or little if any 3d qualites. All of the erosion pieces are super glossy and the lights that you can add are not as effective as in reach. The shadows don’t always look good and indoor maps have a heavy shadow that mutes out the color-except for your super bright Spartan.
I can live with the size of the maps and the magnet system, but the lack of precision does dissapoint. They may be able to fix that in an update, but the lack of detail may not be fixed. You can take almost any piece from reach and it will look better than Halo 4. I understand the reason for bringing back all of the original pieces/shapes, but I would have rather had more new pieces can be more useful.
The rest of Halo 4 is great, so its frustrating to have forge so subpar. I’m sure there will be some good forge creations and fun to be had in this version of forge, but I will not be spending the same amount of time. Too bad they didn’t spend the time improving forge like they did for the rest of the game.
With that said, I can’t wait to forge on Halo 5! Or maybe Halo 6. Or whenever they get it right.
