Do you guys think Halo 4 can win GOTY this year?
I think it can, but not easily.
The major competors come to my mind are…
Dishonored. If you look at all the previews, this game comes with lots of innovative approaches. Depending on how polished this game is, it will give quite competition.
Keep in mind that innovation does not necessarily equal GOTY. Look at Skyrim.
It was just improvement from its predecessor. Other titles had more innovations or fresh approaches(Batman AC, Portal 2. Those two deserved GOTY more imo.)
Assassin’s Creed 3. Some people will say they are pumping games too frequently like COD. Think again. Assassin’s Creed was in development for 3 years. The game has been in development along with Brotherhood and Revelation. With new engine, so many things are vastly improved. And preview look really promising and awesome. This is one of the series that keep getting better.
Now, Tomb Raider and Bioshock: Infinity have been delayed to 2013, so that narrows down competition.
I don’t think Mass Effect 3 will stand a chance with all the enraged fanbase(myself included.) Beside ending, many important things were watered down for sake of shooter element. I admit I had fun with multiplayer. But Bioware nerfed rpg elements too much.
I am not sure about Diablo 3. Many people waited for this game too long. I enjoyed till I got stuck at Hell difficulty. I am not sure whether GOTY competition has been friendly to hack and slash. I can’t decide on this one.
Max Payne 3 and Borderland 2 are pretty good runner up, but I believe Dishonored and Assassin’s Creed are the biggest candidate along with Halo 4.

I doubt it’s going to happen. There are 2 potentially 3 better candidates, ME3, Diablo 3, and The Last of Us. Halo 4 will be in the running though.
It looks to me as if CoD may have been knocked out of the race. They brought zero awards from E3 and everyone I talk to says “Yeah it looks okay, but its not exactly blowing me away”. With Halo 4 many people were like “Holy -Yoink-! That game looks freaking awesome! When does it come out!?”

Just because it is built upon established format does not take away chance.
At least, it isn’t copy paste like MW series.

ME3 dispite the ending was a VERY good game. Diablo 3 has a good chance as it was also very good. I’m pretty sure The Last of Us is this year, but not completely, that’s why I said potentially 3.

Too many fetch quests. Auto dialogue. Smaller squad compared to previous games. And that didn’t even grant us more in depth on characters. Rachni just turning into little number in war asset. Too many lazy and rushed works.
Our decision making no impact in the end. I can go on. No definitely not ME 3. If it wins, then it must be a new low standard for gaming. And GOTY needs to be overall satisfaction imo. So no sorry. If ending ruined replayability, then no GOTY. It isn’t just me. Majority agree.
I think the term better is underestimating Halo 4 bit. To be honest, I am bit more inclided to Assassin’s Creed. That can change though.
I didn’t see the big deal with The Last of Us. Impressive graphics, yeah, but to be honest, I feel like I’ve seen it before.
Then again, 3rd person stuff is a little pet peeve of mine (dunno why, must be something about immersion or whatever). And I read The Road so any other post-apocalyptic fiction gets compared to that monument of heart-rending hopelessness.
On topic, at least Halo 4 has a good shot. If it is anywhere near as amazing as what we’ve seen, than everything else has steep competition too.
