currently you can get a used halo 4 for $15 or a used black ops 2 for $30 on ebay. These games came out a year ago at $59. why is black ops holding its value better than halo? personally i’d guess the multiplayer gameplay. halo 4 matchmaking is like the united nations. 3 or 4 continents represented in an 8 man game. while black ops hardly ever matches me up outside my country’s region. not my hemispheric region mind you, my COUNTRY’S region.
Black Ops 2 has a “local only” search option. In fact, Treyarch CoD games always split between, “local only”, “try local but other regions are ok” and “anywhere”. The first option is always on by default, but can be changed.
Halo 4 doesn’t have any of these options and it is the first reason I believe for the population dropping.
Due to the lack of interest in lagging all the time, the price for Halo 4 has dropped to try and sell whatever copies remain.
Ebay is a VERY poor choice when citing prices.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II is still being sold at full-price on Steam. Modern Warfare 3 and Black Ops are being sold at $39.99, also on Steam.
Black Ops II is also being sold at Gamestop and BestBuy at full-price.
The standard edition of Halo 4 is being sold for $30 new and the GotY Edition is at $40 (of course).
Call of Duty is notorious for maintaining a high price-point long after it’s release. This proves nothing against Halo 4 except that Call of Duty earns A LOT of money for Activision and the longer and higher the prices of their games, even games that are a few years old, the more money they earn in the long run.
Halo 4’s price being lower than Call of Duty isn’t some conspiracy proving that it is the “inferior” title in the franchise.
COD: Black Ops 2 is more expensive as it is in higher demand. Call of Duty Black Ops 2, Mw3 and Black Ops are all above Halo 4 in terms of population (3 COD games) and when Ghosts is released, Blops 2 will probably still hold the number 2/3 on the most played games list. On the other hand, Halo 4 lost over 95% of its population in 11 months (400,000 peak to 15,000) and Halo 3 is currently poised to go ahead of H4 population wise. Essentially there isn’t the same demand for Halo 4 11 months on from its release as there is for Black Ops 2.
The price of used copies of Halo 4 have probably dropped dramatically probably because the market is saturated with them (I’m sure a lot of players who bought the game were disappointed by the lack of “classic” options in multiplayer and tried to sell it back). The price of new copies of Halo 4 has probably dropped as well in order to compete. It’s just supply and demand.

I wouldn’t be surprised if tons of used copies were returned, but is there proof?

As you were posting, I was editing my post to say “probably because the market is saturated with them.” That’s actually what I meant.
And no, I don’t have proof, but if I were to make a guess, that’s what I’d say.
Supply and demand. The demand is higher for CoD and there is tons of used Halo 4 games with far less demand.
Remember Halo 4 GOTY is a thing. Why sell Halo 4 for such a high price when GOTY is already pretty cheap.
Best Buy had new copies of Halo 4 on sale last week for $10, likely to burn off inventory.
This week, it says the standard edition is no longer available and lists GOTY for $39.99.
