343 using the Reach engine just basically means that they’re not heavily modifying halo or building it’s engine from scratch into something else. Just doing the same thing bungie had kept doing.
> > Well it’s using a heavily modified Reach engine, which is a heavily modified version of every past Halo game’s engine. That being said, I’m quite happy that they’re sticking with the same engine, since it performs exceptionally well and looks gorgeous at the same time. To be honest, Halo 4 is one of the best looking games I have ever seen on the 360, which is something to be said considering we have a lot of good looking games out there.

Yes, so technically the Halo 4 engine is the CE engine

And the CE engine was a modified Unreal engine (I think) so technically Halo 4 is using a really old Unreal engine
Umm compare them side by side and look how awesome halo 4 is compared to reaches thrown together grungy -Yoink!- look.
H4 is gonna look sweet

I like Reach’s darker more matte finish.
I wish they kept the frame blending from Reach. I know there were issues with ghosting but that could have been fixed instead of scrapping it entirely.
Furthermore, even though the Reach beta had more ghosting issues, I just fondly recall it being more fluid than the final game. No idea why.
but they kinda downgraded grphics to fit mor stuff in (if you notice it has a lil cartoony efect like halo 3) and alot of the game is dlc (spartan Ops)and it may be on 2 discs this could fit WAY more stuff one it…bungie actualy said they werent pushing limets on the engine in reach so 343 may be push limets
Well, when you have an engine that players become used to, it’s best to modify your current engine than start from scratch.
When Valve releases the Source 2 engine, you can bet that a lot of it’s base will come from the original Source engine (even says so in it’s coding). It doesn’t mean that they’re being lazy or that it will be the same game, it just allows you to still have a feeling that you’re playing a Halo game, and not some new different game with Halo skins.
Every game does it.
New Unreal Engine coming soon has my vote for best engine. Thing is a monster.
I have no problems with modifying the engine. It seems to be working fine, my problems aren’t with the core but the fluff on top. So…I guess I like the engine?
FUN FACT!: Did you know that Pokemon Black/White 2 Still are using the Same Engines As Pokemon Green/Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal/Ruby/Sapphire/FireRed/LeafGreen/Emerald/Diamond/Pearl/Platinum/HeartGold/SoulSilver/Black 1/ White 1…
Green Engine came First. Then it was improved in Japanese Red version, Then the American Red Version, Then it was further improved in American Blue Version, Then -Yoink!- Blue Version, Then again in Japanese Yellow, Then yet again in American Yellow. Then it was Heavily modified in Pokemon Gold and Silver. Then updated again in Crystal version. Then Ruby/Sapphire/FireRed/LeafGreen/Emerald Further improved it and heavily modified it. Then Diamond/Pearl made GenIII Engine, 3D. Platinum Improved upon Diamond and Pearl. HeartGold and SoulSilver Further Polished the GenIV Engine. Gen V (Black And White) Significantly expanded upon and polished Gen IV’s Engine. Black 2 White 2 just continue the cycle…
The Original Coding used In Generation 1, is still buried deep down in the roots of all Main Series Pokemon Games After Green Version… Its just buried underneath layers of newer fancy coding.
Its still the same cake, and Recipe, Just different Ingredients, and a different Icing and toppings.
Exactly. As long as any Halo game is a Halo game, you need not look further than your shield bar.
Regenerating shields have always been in game. Always.
> I didn’t realize it was the exact same game engine. Either way it still looks amazing.
but its not. it may as well be completely new its been changed so much.
Reach has one of the best image qualities of any console game ever. It really is visually sublime, a feat of engineering. Even so, the Halo 4 engine bests it overall which is gobsmacking. It seems like they are using a lot of texture/mesh streaming though which reach didnt have to do. Not enough RAM in the xbox.
There is really only one Halo Engine. It gets updated and tweaked for each new game. I think Reach gutted and replaced nearly the entire thing though. And i think Halo 4 did the same again.
But somewhere buried deep down in there under the layers, there is very probably still code from CE in halo 4 ticking away. Its quite romantic when you think about it.
And its not an unreal engine, bungie created it bespoke.

It looks more realistic then reach. No game has the cartoony style like cartoon other then 3.Its some of the unfinished textures.

No… Just no…
Halo 3s full game size is roughly 6GB which left 4GB of space on the DVD.
The data size of a game has absolutely nothing to do with it’s graphics.
> The same thing I thought about Reach using the Halo 3 engine, Halo 3 using the Halo 2 engine, and Halo 2 using the Combat Evolved engine. It’s a heavily modified version, it’s pretty much a new engine.
Halo 4 is using the same engine coding as Halo Reach, which is using the same engine coding as Halo 3, which is using the same engine coding as Halo 2, which is using the same engine coding as Halo CE, and I think even Halo Wars is using a version of Halo’s engine.
And to be honest, just because the game was bad, doesn’t mean the engine is a steaming pile of crap, You can have the world’s greatest game engine, and still have the world’s crappiest game.
> The data size of a game has absolutely nothing to do with it’s graphics.
Yes, and no.
The the graphics engine it’s self may not be that big, coding still takes up a lot of space, and then there’s models, bump maps, lighting maps, textures, all of those vary in size, the more detail of a model, the larger the file size. The larger the texture, bump map, lighting map resolution, the larger the file size, and all of that takes up space.
Everything that makes up the game takes up space, just like every little bit of what makes up your body has mass.

Halo 1 2 and 3 all have much more similar engines than reach does to the 3.
I really can’t believe after this many years of halo people still don’t understand. Every halo has used the previous engine. halo 2 used CE’s halo 3 used halo 2’s ETC. BUT they strip the engine down to its basics and builds it up again. I mean come on. Everytime i see this topic i just want to face palm.

What? It’s the same engine rebuilt from the ground up for each iteration.

This is off topic, but how did you get that Doughnut Bringer medal? Did you get it for being at PAX?
