Halo 4 True Skill "CSR" Confusion

Hi there. I’m not all that new to the Halo franchise, been here since the beginning. I recently picked Halo 4 back up after a long period of not playing and have noticed a couple things.

  1. The enemy players have increased vastly in skill (I’ll cover more on this later.)

  2. The population has massively decreased, leaving the people who “no-life” it behind, who dominate all the playlists, or there are totally new players who may have just picked up the game.

Now, why I bring this up is this. I consider myself to be a decent player, not the best, but decent. What I have an issue with is the CSR. I was ranked 17 in Team Doubles. While I know that’s terrible, etc, etc, that’s not what is confusing me.

If I’m supposed to be teamed with people of “similar” skill, why is it I get paired against enemies who have CSR levels of 40 and occasionally higher? It ruins the fun of the game for me when I am hopelessly outmatched by people who constantly crouch-jump, strafe etc. I’m simply not on that same skill level, but why am I getting matched with people of superior skill, and always getting destroyed? It seems really hard for me to find an equal opponent, I always get the ones who absolutely dominates me all game, or the others who seem to have no clue what they’re doing. Thoughts?

A continued loss of population has led to a lack of players in most playlists and this makes finding a balanced match basically impossible. In the earlier part of the summer I usually could match people around my CSR in Infinity Slayer and BTB (the two most populated playlists), but for the majority of the playlists the population is too low to match you against people of your skill level.

One tip I would give is to avoid ‘ranked’ (team based CSR playlists such as Team Doubles, CTF, Team Throwdown) and stick to the more ‘social’ individual CSR playlists (BTB, Infinity Slayer etc). In individual CSR playlists, you will rank up much quicker and these playlists will probably have a much more casual population.

Exactly

You’re complaining about being unevenly matched in a playlist with a relatively low population. If it were to evenly match you then you would be waiting a ridiculously long time.

Play BTB and you will more than likely be matched fairly, once your skill increases then join other playlists with a low population. The issue here is population, which is something 343 can no longer do anything about.

Despite BTB carrying almost half of the Halo 4 online population by itself, I find it to have the worst skill matches of any playlist. I say that because it tends to have a huge range of players anywhere from CSRs 1 to 50 on both teams, so as far as win/loss goes, it really just comes down to the better players trying to win faster than their teammates can lose. The team with the better bad players wins.

I’ve found it to be this way since day one in Halo 4. Of course it’s completely anecdotal on my part with no data to back it up, but even in the weeks/months just after Halo 4 came out, any time I played MP I got stomped. I assumed it would eventually match me up with people of my skill and the games would even out like they did in previous Halo games, but never happened.

From my own experience I feel like BTB match both teams up evenly. Before DLC required in Infinity Slayer I would either dominate the enemy team or my team would be completely destroyed, never in the middle. I have not experienced this in BTB to date. Again, I am only speaking for myself and my own experience. Might work for him too, as I’m sure it does for others.

The problem with BTB is that too often my team messes around, doesn’t know what they’re doing, or just throws the game. I’ve played many Slayer Pro games, where my teammates will sit and betray the team the entire game.

It is because Halo cheats. I get lag cheated, matching up with a bunch of worthless newbies on my team against the most experienced players every time (often, the numbers on their side are greater), get booted for one betrayal even though people betray me the whole game and I never get boot option. Halo 2 cheated, but Halo 4 picks up.

It’s seriously a load of -yoink!-, granted the play isn’t bad, but the CSR system is terrible, and shouldn’t have been implemented 9 months into the game, it should’ve been there from the start.

I still don’t believe this. Halo 3 gets it right.

Could 343 have used Bungie’s servers? I just got out of an Action Sack game, I did well, but the lag was so bad that my shots wouldn’t hit when I fired, while the other team got to lag jump everywhere and get behind me at times. One second I’d be assassinating them, the next, they’d be behind me assassinating ME.
