Time travel is nothing that’s been new to Halo. In First Strike Cortana ends up having their hijacked Covenant ship travel back in time about 2 weeks.
I’ve been noticing some possible clues to some time travel for Halo 4’s backstory.
The Kilo-Five trilogy takes place late 2552-2553. The first book, Glasslands, shows that the Mark VII has entered service. The UNSC Infinity has been outfitted with more Forerunner tech (slipspace drives) and has S-IVs stationed on it.
According to 343i the 2553 model Warthog will be in Halo 4. (Can’t find link but I’ll post it when I find it.)
Kiki Wolfkill says that it’s been 5 years since the Chief went into the cryo-tube at the end of Halo 3. link
According to Frank O’Connor Cortana will be 7 years old.
Now for a while now I’ve been saying the game takes place in 2556-2557 since Cortana was born in 2549.
Notice though how 343i isn’t stating the year that Halo 4 takes place. They are simply stating that Cortana is 7 years old which would imply the possible year.
All post-Halo 3/Halo 4 related content is in 2553.
If I remember correctly, OXM said that Halo 4 takes place in 2553. Now this seemed wrong at first but now it makes sense.
I believe that when the portal closed at the end of Halo 3, it accidentally sends the back half of the Forward Unto Dawn back in time by 5 years. This actually makes sense.
Having the game take place in 2556-2557 with the Kilo-Five trilogy in 2553 would leave too many unexplained events to happen in 3 years. What would the UNSC do? Just stand around? Why would they have a older model Warthog then?
I believe that Halo 4 takes place in the fall of 2553. The third book of the Kilo-Five trilogy will take place after Halo 4 and will explain the status of the haloverse after the game and a set up for Halo 5.

It looks way different than the hogs from Halo 3. In fact, why would Johnson not use the new model hog?

Oh. So what you’re saying is he gets sent back to 2548… then stays in cryo for 5 years. Right? I overthought that a bit if that’s what you meant xD

He is gana waste his time trying to find a new one when time is short?

This is just a theory. I’m not saying it’s the right theory. Also I’m in full support of the 2556-7 backstory. I just find a bit weird with all the 2553s around Halo lately and no actual date being revealed for Halo 4.
When it comes to games, nothing has to make any scense and time travel often occurs, even when it doesn’t
Time travel sure would be cool, and we all know that gravity and the lack of it does effect how we age and also how fast time flows. If Chief would be in a place with zero gravity, or negative gravity, he would travel backward in time.
