Halo 4 Spartans

In Halo 4 campign and spartan ops you fight alongside spartan 4s with grey and yellow recruit armor. What happened to these spartans? They are never seen beyond Halo 4 as far as I know.

Because we never see any of Infinity’s Spartans in Halo 5, which is the only game we’ve had so far.
Grey and yellow, it seems, is the standard Infinity color scheme for Spartans assigned to her. Theoretically other Spartan groups assigned to different ships have their own color schemes. And of course its stated Spartan can choose the color of their armor (within reason), so most likely any that served on Infinity and cut their teeth on Requiem personalized their armor as the fight went on (ex; Majestic and their bright blue kit, Crimson and (I would assume) their red).

Those are the generic Spartan IV Recruits. The still exist canonically, but Halo 4 was the only other time you saw NPC Spartans (excluding Reach) in a Halo game. NPC Spartans don’t appear in Halo 5 (I count the Squad AI as playable because of co-op), at least, not generic ones; Palmer and the squad AI are all named, high-ranking Spartans. But I’m sure there are still plenty of generic Recruits aboard the Infinity.

And technically, you start out as such a Recruit in Halo 5’s multiplayer, until you actively customize your Spartan.

True but I think they should bring those guys back in the future.

As the Spartans 4 weak sons that for example the Spartans 2 and 3

I wouldn’t mind seeing more Spartan IVs in future games, but I really didn’t like how Halo 4’s campaign just sort of tossed them into the level like marines. The only thing that made them seem any different from marines was noticing their shields flare. A Spartan should be a bit more special, maybe with one or two Spartan IVs leading squads of marines, filling a similar role to the Covenant’s Elites or even the rarer Hunters. Seeing other Spartans on the field should make the player think, “Oh, this guy will make a real difference here.” Not, “Oh look, these marines have shields.”

If we have Spartan IV NPCs in another Halo game it should be in a way that keeps the Spartan presence special, as their existence in the story at all has watered down the Spartan name enough as it is.

I agree with you. That is another thing never seen in Halo 5, marines. Not once in the campaign do we see live marines. Also Halo has dumbed down its AI ever since reach. I go back and play Halo 3 and I trade weapoms with a marine (say I give him a plasma pistol for his assault rifle) and fifteen minutes later o the same mission I see the same marine with the same plasma pistol and I think “cool I fought with him before”. It really gives the sense of Halo beong more than just a game when things like that happen.

I liked the fact that Osiris was exploring places with no UNSC presence, and that we got to fight with civilian security forces. That was cool, in a story sense.

Agree about the terrible AI, though. The Spartan IVs in Halo 4 were only noticeable when they were in your vehicle, and the security on Meridian were not noticeable at all period even when they technically were there “fighting” nearby.

And it’s not even just a gameplay issue, it affects how people perceive these groups in the story, from a world building point of view. Even the Halo 1 marines had a much better “story” presence through interacting with them as Master Chief in the campaign. I can guarantee I’m never going to look back fondly on any of the ally NPC fighters in Halo 4 or 5, but I’ll never, ever forget the Halo 1-3 marines/ODSTs and their place in the Halo universe.

It really depends on the armor/color/ranking system, which beyond gameplay, we don’t know much about. (Do they actively customize color for camoflouge?, do they always have the same colors for a fireteam?) I had one theory that the color/armor combination is only for newly-appointed, recruited Spartan-IVs. Problem with that theory is, I doubt every single Spartan on the Infinity was brand new and fresh. Since Halo 4 already had the multiplayer armors and colors, 343 could’ve theoretically made every Spartan-IV look different without using many resources.

Maybe make it so that Spartan-IV NPCs can use the Spartan Abilities like the player can? Spartan-IVs should also be able to use weapons the Marines can’t(like energy swords, gravity hammers, etc) Also, Spartan-IVs could carry turrets around, unlike Marines.

Completely agreed. Not to mention, you’re always on the move in Halo 5. You never get moments like that because you never stay in one place for too long(no objectives to defend an area, for example), and with the Spartan Abilities, you always leave the friendly AI in the dust. I had fears before Halo 5 came out that since we had the fireteam with us at all times, there would be NO friendly AI. (So I was at least happy to see Meridian colonists and Swords of Sanghelios Elites). In general, though, UNSC marines and other friendly AI should still be a big part of the experience. (Though I’m sure Halo 5 was like that only because we were always on the fringes outside of UNSC territory.)

Agreed, Halo 5 had some great atmosphere. (Even the intel had some really well-written side-stories.)And yes, the AI is definitely worse. I have no idea how Halo 4’s AI could’ve been worse than Reach’s, though, since they were pretty much a copy+paste.

Although, too be fair, there are some memorable things with the AI in Halo 5. Stuff that the H1-3 AI rarely did, such as going through a scripted animation while they talk directly to you(rather than just saying something nearby.) People like the first colonist you see immediately off of the elevator, the two talking while looking over a holographic display, some of the wounded that were being treated, and the different interactive AI in the weapons-down levels. Same thing with the Sangheili.

Outside of that, though, we need two things: 1. We need to fight alongside friendly AI more often, and 2. We need those friendly AI to have tons of random combat dialogue and scripted dialogue.
