Trueskill has been in all the Halo games, including Wars, and minus Halo: Combat Evolved. It’s only job is to match players up with other players at their skill range, so that games remain close and intense.
In Halo 2, it was simple, straightforward, and visible to everyone. The only problem was, it was accurate, and didn’t give any sense of progression or gain. So unless you modded or were naturally skilled to begin with, a lot of players lost interest. Many players learned to lose games, so that they could enjoy beating players of lower skill without much competition, and unnaturally boost their trueskill higher than it would normally be. I.E. they abused the system. The system failed, in the end, to serve it’s purpose because of players learning, and breaking, it.
In Halo 3, it was perverted with ‘experience’, points gained by playing, and still visible to everyone. Deranking became more common, as well as boosting. Many lower-tiered ranked playlists were ruined because of this. And the truth was that there were varying degrees of ‘level 50’, some players being good … and others horrible. The system failed again, but this time it was much more dramatic.
In Halo Reach, trueskill was hidden, and the experience system was separated into ‘ranks’. Now players could get a sense of progression, while also being placed in relatively equal games. The system itself is prone to far less abuse due to being ‘behind-the-scenes’, so derankers are far less common. Boosting, however, only really affects rank, and not trueskill, in the long run. All in all, the system works … except that the 1-50 system is no longer the bragging rights it once was.
Take the facts, guys:
Trueskill is meant to match players in good games.
The less visible trueskill has been, the less prone to abuse it sees.
Ranks and trueskill are, and probably should be, completely separated.
Ranks should only be visible to give a player a sense of progression and completion.
Trueskill should only be visible to allow a player to know about where they stand.
My point? The system works, and is abused less, behind the scenes. I know I’m barely above mid-grade as far as skill. A good player knows when he’s good. A great player knows when their great.
Quit couching a number next to your name to show everyone how not so good you really are.
