I’ll tell you why I don’t like Reach as simply as I can. Everyone I play is terrible or a team of 4 pubstars. There is no inbetween and you never know which one you’re about to get.
CLOSE GAMES!!!
I like games that are exciting and close. 50-49 games are amazing. I’d much rather lose an awesome game of 8 equally skilled players right in the final moments than win 50-10. The ranking system in Halo 3 was flawed, however more often than not you got games with people of similar skill. It was nice how you could play with similarly skilled players whenever you felt like it.
SOCIAL? IS IT THOUGH?
The other side of this is that social will be far more… social! Fair enough you will still get full teams of sweatpants calling out and dominating randoms who barely play, but it will be FAR less prevalent. I don’t know about you guys, but when I’ve had a session with my friends. Sometimes we like to crash at my place and play drunken Halo 3 social.
MY POINT IS…
Let’s have the option to choose our opposition. We need to be able to make the choice to play casual games or competitive games. Because mixing competitive and casual gamers in all playlists just does not work.
> HALO REACH… EEW.

I freakin hate halo reach. I can rank up to the highest rank without even touching the controller… or even winning a game. Same with gears and COD… It has to stop. WHERE HAS THE SKILL GONE…
In response to your title I whole heartedly agree with you. If there are legitimate ranks like 1-50 or some equivalent people will eventually look past the game’s flaws as they attempt to rise in the ranks. Maybe not everyone, but most will.
I remember when Halo 3 came out and I hated equipment. After a while I just sucked it up and played b/c the ranks give you a sense of accomplishment and makes the game 10x more fun. Now I enjoy equipment. Maybe I don’t love it, but it’s fine to me now.
A ranking system WILL make this game a bigger success.
I feel exactly the same about equipment, was never the biggest fan of it when it was introduced. Over time i started to love it, dropping a bubble shield or throwing a power drain and an incoming warthog made for some great moments. However, I cannot say the same thing about AA’s… Even if Reach introduced a 1-50 right now, i still don’t think i’d grow to like them
So how do you curb deranking and full party boosting? You can easily full party boost your way to a 50’s, keep doing it until your sigma ranking is locked in and then what. Careful what you kids ask for, it could end up being far worse than even Reach.

Equipment is useful, but is in no way gamebreaking. It’s actually really quite well done how they made it. Makes for some interesting gameplay and strategies at least.
It’s why I want trick jumping and more individual based gameplay back to make Halo feel like you’re a super soldier. Reach made me feel like I couldn’t afford to take on more than one enemy without hiding and letting my shields come back up because it took so long to kill and the whole bloom disaster.
