I just recently started playing Halo 4 again. I do pretty well in Team Slayer, I was a level 3 and now I’m a level 1. And I don’t seem to be going up in any other playlist either.
Can someone explain how rank works in this game?
team slayer is ranked by individual score, so out score other players (especially higher ranked players) in the match and you will rank up. If you are outscored by lower rank players you will go down. So if you want to rank up it’s good to play against players with a higher csr than you have. If you beat lower ranked players you are expected to do that so you won’t rank up as quickly.

It was changed to win/loss last year during the Team Slayer Top 200. Since then, in Team Slayer, you rank up by winning against players ranked the same as or higher than you; individual scores don’t matter.
Yep, it’s true. If you haven’t noticed there is a description that pops up by hovering over the information icon. It will explain all about it, all you need to do in order to get a good explanation is by heading over to your Halo 4 Stats page, then hovering the mouse over the “i” icon by the “CSR”(Competitive Skill Rank) section. Don’t get me wrong I like the ranking system and I think csr is awesome I just wish you could turn it off some how, or it had seperate playlist. I play halo because I enjoy it, but I do not enjoy constantly going up and down in rank, i can’t stand the fact that I win a few games and do well and start ranking up only to get slaughtered by players better then me!!! The constant up and down is annoying and I wish I could play without getting destroyed 5 games in a row after destroying everyone the previous 4
