Didn’t it say that in the Greg Bear novels? They’re mutated Forerunners with lots of cybernetic-esque implants, but they’re very much alive. Crawlers and watchers, not so much. Knights are, however.

Yes, but the Promethians we see in Halo 4 are Sentinel AI (Ancillas), so they must have been Composed
