Halo 4 music in the NBA?!

So you just feel that abandoning the traditional theme was a good idea?

You know that africanese moaning you hear when you turn the game on? yeah, that crap is literally all over every single movie and video game out there. I mean, every movie or game that has a “important” or “emotional” scene, they use that kind of music. Gregorian chant, that was what Marty used, and it set halo’s music apart from everything. Not only that but the use of Violin and war drums in Marty’s music was just all too iconic for Halo, and 343 ripped that away.

Just watch This and watch up all the way up until 0:40 and tell me that isnt just some generic Star Wars crap that got copy and pasted into Halo!

THAT cutscene would have been so much better had it not had that damn starwars music in the beginning.

They only partially redeemed the music of this game by playing the original Halo theme immediately after, but that did little to settle my rage.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdDwxdqLyGg I bet it was this, not Halo related though…

everything i read was that 343 wanted to keep marty for the remainder of the series but he chose to leave.

i do agree that clip is heavily star wars influenced. but i, and many others, tend to believe that john williams is one of the greatest movie composers of all time and star wars has some of the best original scores ever. i thought the music went great in this scene. was it something ultra original? no, but nothing in any of the halos has been ultra original. but its been a nice blend of influence and this scene is no different.

i mean your whole post reeks of hatting just to hate.

The theme? You mean “Never Forget”? I don’t know if anybody ever told you, but that’s not the theme song…

That scene did indeed sound very out of place with that music. But I’ll say now that Halo 4’s OST as a whole does not sound overly generic. A lot of songs in it sound quite unique and I’d instantly be able to recognise the style. Neil Davidge’s and Kazuma’s music actually have more layers to them than Marty’s. Marty focuses quite a lot on melody. This is why people say they remember Marty’s tracks more. Melody just makes it easier to remember. Doesn’t make it better. People always look at soundtracks as something you individually listen, when it’s not supposed to be. It’s designed to work with the story presented alongside the music. To improve/add some flare to it. I feel Halo 4’s OST does this perfectly fine.

Come on already, OP! Give us the video!

Never Forget was played at the very end of the game at the start of the credits. He’s not talking about that. He’s talking about the monks immediately after that “Star Wars” music.

Are you tellin me that chants in music are not generic? It’s not in video games but have you ever watched a movie?

Halo 4 probably has one of the best soundtracks in Halo history. You’re just bias.

Marty has used this element as well, and no, not in an entirely non-generic fashion.

Granted, I do agree Neil had a rough start but listening back on the CE track, I found some of Marty’s early work with Halo equally distasteful. Towards the end of the soundtrack and especially the tracks featured in Volume II, you see more of a Marty-esque interperetation in Halo that is still modern but relevant.

Marty may be my favorite composer for the series thus far, but I don’t think we should be blindly fanboying what he brought in. His use of the Gregorian chant was both unique and cliche, for example. His work on Reach was TERRIFICALLY generic, I’d daresay moreso than Halo 4’s track. Heck, I remember more distinct songs from 4’s track than Reach.

Marty isn’t a god… don’t forget that. I reckon Neil and company will get that very distinct, lovable, Halo-esque feeling in a much higher level of representation in the next couple games.

I would also daresay and add this:

Marty’s stylization is more traditional orchestra with gregorian chants and some rock + electronica.

Neil’s style is more electronica and some brass.

Kazuma’s style is more brass with some orchestrated.

All three use the same basic instrumentations, just different variations on which gets the most focus.

With Marty, hymn chants and orchestration were prevalent.

With Neil, electronica and war chants were prevalent.

With Kazuma, brass and support orchestration were prevalent.

It all comes down to the listener’s tastes, really. Personally, I thought Neil’s use of war chants and the more archaic foreboding chants in Nemesis and Revival fit Halo to a T and fit the general thematic elements which have been built around the Didact. It fits the ancient-come-alive feel.

So it depends on what you do and don’t interperet as Halo. There are pieces of Marty’s that definitely weren’t as “Halo” as they should have been.

That’s nothing. A few years ago, I was at a Padres game and I guess the players got to choose what music to play when they walked on the field for the first time. Most of it was generic, boring stuff.

In the final inning of the game, the Padres put their closing pitcher in and “Blow Me Away” from the Halo 2 soundtrack was playing. Now that was an experience!

Any weirdness caused by that scene was immediately compensated for by the monk chants right after.

Though I have to agree that was very Star Wars-ish. Even the setting, with the dim sun and asteroids, with a dull glow on everything, was like something straight out of a Lucas film. Weird.

It was Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers, I saw the game and even posted the video for it. Obviously no one checked it out. But it wasn’t Halo.

Oh. Right. I assumed “right after” meant “right after the game ended.”

Well, if we’re going off-topic here, I think I might as well state that even though Halo 4’s music is awesome, I still liked the old style of soundtrack better. One thing that’s notable, though, is that my non-Halo-playing family members acknowledged that some songs back on the old soundtrack were pretty awesome, especially for a video game, but Halo 4’s songs are probably the first that they sought out and listened to on their own.

Maybe we just like it for the nostalgia, since it was the first music to go with Halo, or maybe we just felt that it fit in with the game better. But from an outside perspective, Halo 4’s music -might- actually be better. Just something to think about.

I just realized there was an actual Halo in Halo 4 >.>
