Halo 4 matchmaking rank

Halo 4 matchmaking ranking system need to go back to the Halo 2 rank system and here’s why. Halo Reach had a great idea on a different way of ranking. It seemed to me that Bungie wanted to be like Call Of Duty. You play a lot and don’t have to be good at the games to get a high rank. I know a lot of people liked this because you can unlock armor and stuff while you progress; and it’s not like Halo 3 where your military rank will go as high as your level will let you go. But like I said, ITS JUST LIKE CALL OF DUTY! This is not Call of Duty, Its Halo! The Halo 4 Matchmaking Rank System should go back to the Halo 2 ranking system and this is why. Now that you can record and send in videos of people who cheat, this eliminates Modding, Standbying, and Bridging to give one team an unfair advantage. Halo 2 made Halo so competitive because it broke every person into their individual skill level. You always played people your same skill level and as you got better your level would increase and the competition would get even better. In Halo 2 you had to win three games in a row to go up one level and if you lost one, you would have to start over and if you lost several games in a row you would lose a level. This made Halo 2 the BEST multiplayer that Halo has had so far because it gave every player a fair match unlike Halo Reach. In Halo Reach you can be new to the game playing against people who have had the game since it came out. WHY WOULD SOMEONE NEW WANT TO KEEP PLAYING AFTER THAT? Halo 2, if you were new to the game you would only be playing other new people or people who aren’t good at halo so where they have a chance to fall in love with THE BEST MULTIPLAYER OUT THERE. Now I know Halo Reach did get a lot of fans with their new Ranking system, But THAT RANK MEANS NOTHING, any person with no life could look like the best Halo player in the world. I don’t think that you Matchmaking rank should have any effect on your military rank so that 343 can still have a ranking system like Reach but have a true skill level to bring back the competitive game play that every true Halo fan misses. Let me know what you think.

To people who tl;dr’d. Halo 4 must have Halo 2’s ranking system.

Quick tip: it makes it easier to read a post if you hit return/enter after every couple of sentences.

That said, I get your point and I wholeheartedly agree that the Halo 4 ranking system should be nothing like the progression system in CoD / Reach, but unfortunately I disagree with a move back to the Halo 2 ranking system. I’ve explained why in all the previous threads that called for it and I’m not going to take the time to type out everything I wrote in those threads all over again, so I’ll just paste them below:

I think there’s a little too much nostalgia going when it comes to people calling for a return to a Halo 2-esque system. Moreover, as I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t think a Ranking system based on ELO, instead of Microsoft’s TrueSkill system will make a return to any FPS on XBOX live, due to its clunkiness. To quote someone over at NeoGaf:

“There’s no reason to use ELO when you have banks of server blades that can do better calculations for you - ELO was designed to be computable by humans with pen and paper quickly”

The same user wrote a pretty insightful article over at HBO:
Why We Should Never Go Back to 1-50… or
The Death of the Halo Black Market

The Halo 2 system had many flaws (these are direct quotes from the above article), but I see many people brushing them under the carpet, for reasons I can only assume relate to the aforementioned nostalgia:

-huge amounts of cheating/hacking/modding
-rank compression, resulting in uneven matchups
-In ELO, it’s possible to lose rank for winning*
-Long search times, due to “skill islands”

*Making the following statement (which I see a lot on here) “Pure Win/Loss, like Halo 2” comprehensively erroneous.

I know the article is old and is heralding the Arena system as a great solution to this, and I largely disagree with that stance, though I do think there was some merit to The Arena system, once it became pure Win/Loss (though the very same move also simultaneously brought boosters back into the fray).

There’s also another great article with a proposal for a revamped Ranking system, once more based largely on The Arena, which I’ve also posted elsewhere, but it’s worth re-posting, as it didn’t receieve much attention and it has some very positive ideas, IMO.

Reach: Rankings and the Arena

I personally don’t think that 1-50 is itself necessary. Those are just numbers to indicate TrueSkill, which could in itself be displayed in any number of variations. Hell, like the article above suggests, it could even be inverted to make “Number 1” the actual highest rank. “I’m Number 1” is something that someone who has never even played Halo can immediately grasp, due to its inherent familiarity and use elsewhere.

Controversial? Yeah. But it’s just one of many ways for TrueSkill to be displayed. I think the crucial criteria any Halo 4 ranking system must fulfill is “intuitive comprehension”. It needs to be plain and easy to understand. The workings of the system itself also need to be very publicly communicated, both in-game and online, to ensure the highest population possible. Without a Ranked set of playlists with a nice, healthy population, TrueSkill may as well go out the window.

I’m still undecided about the visible vs. invisible rank argument. I really didn’t like the fact that it took so long to find someone’s Arena stats in their Service Record. I think there’s an argument to be made for visibility attracting players to Ranked playlists (thus solving my aforementioned problem of low population causing stagnation in Arena), though it also obviously brings in its own inherent problems - here comes the Halo Black Market again.

Whatever we end up with, I’m already seeing hints that it will be moving in a very positive direction and that 343i appear to be very much aware of what worked and didn’t work in previous titles.

i loved the halo 2 ranking system but the things i did hate about it is it was much easier for a deranker to screw you over and the number actually goes down it stayed in halo 3 if you locked at 27 your a 27 even if you derank to one in halo 2 you could derank all the way back to a one and it also invited more cheaters to the game lots of modders and stand byers to me it was frustrating but one especially when you beat the modders halo 2 ranking had it all and the drama that followed as well for that bragging right of the ultimate rank that you earned without cheating to get there strongside is the only person to ever get a legit 50 in halo 2

Me personaly, I am a Hardcore Halo fan. I have played this game ever since Halo: Combat
Evoloved. Yes their WAS ways of cheating and finding games did take longer BUT look at Halo Reach, it gets 250k to 300k players at one time max. Halo 2 almost every weekend, I remeber seeing 900k+ plyers every weekend. That shows that Halo lost almost 75% of it fans because of the direction it was going.
Clearly Bungie did something right in Halo 2 and when they changed into Halo Reach they almost KILLED this amazing game and its universe. Halo has and will always be know for their amazing multiplayer that is the most compeditive multiplayer for any consol and the Storyline of Master Cheif.

No, I want my rank to reflect MY skill, not my teams. A win doesn’t mean I’m good. It just means that mt team did better than the other team. I’ve gone +10 in a match and have still lost.
Winning =/= individual skill unless playing ffa.

Definately want ranks but, definately not based on skill.

I am truly one of the most faithful halo players that you will find, and I have been playing since halo 2’s debut. I first started playing online multiplayer in halo 3, and then into reach. I’m sure everyone can tell me why halo reach is the worst halo multiplayer out there, and now I do agree. It just doesn’t capture people to keep playing, unlike halo 3. I want the best for halo, and with that said halo 4 needs to be revolutionary, fundamentaly similar to halo 3’s ranking system, but revamped and improved upon.

Yes. I want my rank to reflect my skill level. I don’t care if it’s 1-50 or 1-100,
just give us a number. And not that Arena BS that was given to us either. It’s not
accurate.

To people who want ranks, Halo 3 had it down perfectly. You could still get a general in
social slayer.

Exactly, if you want to know your individual skill, play LONEWOLF, FFA, RUMBLE PIT. Thta is for the individual player. TEAM SLAYER, whats that first word again. TEAM, so it should be your teams score. Win or Lose. Its designed to rate how well you and your team play. if you go +10 K/D spread every game, GREAT! send me a friend request. Ill play with you, be on my team. There is a reason for each game type
And to anyone who says that there sould be no Rank Or not Ranked on skill. Please dont get to offended but PLEASE PUT YOUR CONTROLER DOWN, GO TO GAMESTOP AND PLEASE SALE ANYTHING YOU HAVE OF HALO. Halo has and will always be about skill. Any true Halo fan will agree with that STATMENT. Halo has always been about compitition and they should never get away from that.

One other thing, and any true Halo fan will agree. Levels 1-50, 1-100, 100-1, 50-1, it doesnt matter if it goes up or down, ALL WE WANT IS A RANKING SYSTEM BASED ON SKILL

I’d rather it didn’t go down just because you lost like in Halo 3.

it doesnt matter to me as long as we all get that awesome ranking we want not everybody should be able to achieve the ranks thats what i like it defies the men from mouses

i liked how it went down and up it helped you figure out your mistakes and what you can do to make your rank better gives you more reason to push for the higher rank i didnt like how it stayed in halo 3 it had a good ranking no doubt but if your a 45 and lose all the way to a 40 your still locked at 45 how many 50s are out there that deranked all the way to a one yet still locked at 50 you should lose that along with your deranking no fun playing team slayer at 1 rank and you take on a team of 4 that are 50s who couldnt hack the 50s so they went to noob status so they can feel good at the game

halo 2 had it perfect if your 20 level your playing nothing but 20 levels maybe some 30s and so fourth the 40s get matched with 40s made it way more competitive and ranked playlist should always be competitive thats why they have social slayer for the casual gamers who just play the game for fun now poeple like us who are all about the compitition hearing that guy scream on the mic cause he lost and intense firefight with you makes you pumped up to own the next opponent who comes your way i mess around in social i play to win in ranked

EXACTLY, I dont know about you but I hate getting any type of noob on my team that I have to backpack. Also most people once they got a 50 they stopped playing that game type. I think that they should lose levels if they dont play that gametype to try and stay on top. That would make it harder to be the #1 player in any playlist

> Exactly, if you want to know your individual skill, play LONEWOLF, FFA, RUMBLE PIT. Thta is for the individual player. TEAM SLAYER, whats that first word again. I agree with this until the red bit, which I didn’t quote. There’s no need for that kind of stuff man. But yeah, you pretty much nailed my thoughts in relation to ranked team games.

If you read the second article I linked to above, you’ll see there’s a proposal for modified scoreboards in team games, where kill numbers are superseded by the global performance meters/numbers, including assists, objective scores etc. and I saw Frankie hint at something along these lines in the most recent bulletin. I honestly think if something like this comes along it could work wonders for teamwork in Halo 4.

spartan26 your looking for the exact same type of ranking system i am and if 343 brings it back i know it will save halo and bring the million players every weekend back the ranking armor abilities is what killed the community i myself got bored with reach by how unbalanced it was it needs to be balanced again

Halo 4 Multiplayer Video

i dont click nothing on no forums regarding the game thats not out i fell for that once before mortal kombat came out i clicked it then boom my computer started smoking i aint falling for no viruses dont wanna have to buy a new computer cause i clicked a link like i had to before

Same here. I miss the millions of people playing Halo. I miss never playing the same person twice. I dont think i ever played the same person twice in Halo 2. I almost gave up on Halo Reach, they brought back the zero bloom and thats what kept me. Halo Reach Is Horrible but I think they know that and clearly they are going back to how it should be
