I’m talking about it’s graphic/art style.
Almost everything in the game just seems to ‘perfect’, it does not seem like there has been a war or anything. For example, the lich just looks too plain and simple. There is very little detail and no wear and tear at all. Makes if very hard to see it as intimidating. Same goes for the Spartan armor, they are all just so clean and perfect. They don’t make you seem like a battle-hardened Spartan at all. The same can be said for the campaign, what I liked about reach was how it looked like an actual war, while Halo 4 doesn’t seem that way.
I can’t be the only one that feels this way right?
tl;dr The way everything looks so perfect makes the game seem less real to me.
Well, most of these stuffs are actually quite new. Spartans IV for example haven’t been around for a very long while.
Kind of hard to have a war when you haven’t had any real conflict for almost 4 years. The Spartan Armor is new, the Infinity is new it has been in production for years, Requiem itself hasn’t been touched in almost 100,000 years. The excuse with the Lich can be said about many of the Covenant vehicles. I don’t think you bring up a valid excuse in my opinion.
Agree^^ That’s pretty much the first time the equipment has ever been used. As for the Lich I have no idea if it also new or just unknown hearing the ally reactions in campaign. Hopefully we’ll see some awesome design upgrades with the upgraded hardware! That being said I wouldn’t be all that surprised if Chief is given an upgraded suit and it looks new. Which reminds me if Chief got a brand new suit in Halo 2 then why was it battle worn?
I actually agree in a way. I kind of know what he’s saying. There just isn’t any sort of grit. I’m not saying that it needs to be all dirty and all that, but it seems as though the organic and non-organic objects exist separately, not in the same…existence. It’s hard to explain. It seems as though the two are independent of each other in terms of condition. The fact that is all looks sparkling new and SHINY just kind of takes the realism out of it.
And, actually, no. The Covenant’s forces SHOULD be in a bit of disrepair. The Sangheili have had no engineers to repair their stuff, and are helpless to do it on their own.

This guy understands me the most, it is pretty hard to explain.
I believe this was an attempt by 343i to remove the unappealing darkness of Spartans in Halo:Reach. However, they stand out too much in dark areas, such as shadows.
While I have to say that the technology that has gone into Halo 4 does dazzle on a technological stand point, I have to agree that it does not look like an organic and believable world. It reminds me of a sort of comic book realism where everything is polished and clean, even when there are legitimate situations where nothing would be clean or orderly.
Though, strangely, it is keeping in line with how Halo 3 looked to me. That too was rather slick and clean looking. Which was rather unlike Halo 2 or Halo Reach (both of which I loved the look for… maybe not so much Reach’s ‘motion blur’, but still).
Besides, for the peeps claiming that this stuff is brand new, wouldn’t the training and qualifying on the equipment and weapons give it a little ware? I was in the Army and we got brand new Striker vehicles… They looked like they had seen their time after one month of training with them. They were still new, and worked great, but they looked like a pile of dung no matter how much we cleaned them. Very unlike Spartan 4’s or their equipment.
If you look closely , there is minor wear and tear , scratches on the Spartan IV armor . I think it looks quite decent being that this is the new Spartan program being brought back , rebooted by UNSC .
It kinda sucks, cause the graphics are amazing but the way everything looks so clean and perfect keeps reminding me that it’s just a video game and kind of ruins the immersion.
True, but remember that the Spartan IV-Program is relatively new and that the Spartans participate in War Games, so that could be a reason for why their armor looks so perfect.
But campaign, yes - I agree. When I first saw Halo 4, I was like, “Yeah, this art style is not for me”. However, I’ve gotten used to it and now I love the art style!
I agree with OP, I enjoyed the gritty feeling of Halo: Reach and Halo 2 and hated the pristine armor in Halo 3 and Halo 4
This OP has really got me thinking on the art style.
They used this art style on purpose me thinks
Requiem looks beautiful and an ideal vacation resort. But that’s just a thin veneer of kindness on top of killer robot dogs, high tech weapons, sophisticated vehicles, and deadly knights. Everything looks fine on the surface, but you can see glimpses of flaws in the structure, similar to the art style.
Fake… wtf, its a game… how many actresses have real -Yoink-? Some of their racks look a lil to perfect to me.

Well you are floating on the edge of contradiction. The chief’s amror in Halo 3 was a battle-damaged duplicate of the stuff in Halo 2, but I get your meaning. I think though that it works for Halo 4. Reach was a long-standing colony world and the UNSC at the loosing end of a bitter war. Improvised, disheveled, it helped characterize the world (when the writing certainly wasn’t up to the challenge.)
But since Halo 3 the UNSC has had to rebuild EVERYTHING. You can bet that the S4 armor still has a factory smell to it. As we go on though I think 343 should defintely add a little more flavor (see some of the new covie stuff) but for now it’s totally appropriate (except for the covies. IMO even a wraith should have a “duct-tape and bailing wires” look to distinguish it as the product of a far-less-than-total military effort.)
