Halo 4 IWHBYD Skull

What does it do? I mean you activate the skull, but what changes? I haven’t heard any Covenant yelling “He was my lover!” or whatnot - does anyone have any concrete examples of what lines change with the skull activated?

It unfortunately only works around Marines and such. That’s (unfortunately) the price you pay for having the Covenant speak their own language. Which is unfortunate, as the Covenant were always funnier.

EDIT: I realized I said ‘unfortunate’ way too many times. Jeez.

The example you gave was from Halo 3 and ODST when the Covenant spoke English. They don’t any longer. This skull is nowhere near as fun in Halo 4 or Reach as it was in Halo 3.

Here’s the run down on the IWHBYD Skull. It stands for “I Would Have Been Your Daddy” which is the set up to an old joke that ends with “But a dog beat me over the fence”.

Anyway, when they record dialog for the games (marines & covenant), they have in-game lines that are triggered by certain things. You’ll often hear “Time for medicine” or “Frag out!” but they also record ridiculous & humorous lines like “Merry Christmas” and “Ding -Yoink!- the Demon’s Dead” and, in the case you mentioned “he was my lover” or when switching a weapon with a friendly Elite “Didn’t I get you this for Christmas, Reclaimer?” (Halo 3 has some weird thing with Christmas)

There’s an algorithm that says certain line have a certain probability of being triggered and heard. These are the standard lines, and the more humorous ones have lower probability of being heard. The IWHBYD skull switches this so you’re more likely to hear ridiculous dialog.

Funny IWHBYD dialog

Only works with marines.
