Halo 4 is good, just not a good Halo

Halo 4 is the most poorly received addition to the main franchise (CE,2,3,Reach and 4). It is still at a very respectable 87 on metacritic and has won some awards. What does this say about the franchise as a whole? It’s an exceptional series with very passionate fans. It isn’t a bad game when compared to other games outside the Halo franchise, but when compared to previous entries it is a disappointment. I personally like it better than Reach, but compared to Halos 1-3 it is a tier below them. I feel like it has strayed too far from the core gameplay that made it Halo. I dislike many of the changes and was hoping for the removal of loadouts and armor abilities before any information about the game was released or at the very least a classic type Halo experience playlist. Several parts of the community are disappointed with 4 compared to its predecessors including casual players, competitive players, forgers, custom games players, and machinima makers. Many of these problems stem from the removal of theater in campaign/spartan ops, the removal of gametypes that were staples of the Halo franchise, lack of maps that shipped on disc, removal of forge world, removal of firefight, lack of in game csr (people were upset about this in Reach too) and the online file browser just plain not working. Things added to the games have mixed reactions are ordnance drops and the replacement of static weapon spawns with random weapon drop timers. Many people also feel that 343 isn’t listening, but that isn’t completely true. The matchmaking playlists have been heavily criticized, but 343 has taken note and is working on it. They have recently got the file browser up and running in game. They are working towards fixing the issues that are present in the game currently. This gives me high hopes that the game will get much better. What do you guys think? Will Halo 5 be better and more true to the franchise roots?

^Couldnt have said it better myself.

This would be a spectacular Sonic the Hedgehog game.

hmmm. well, to get started, I’m gonna hit you with a wall of text. If you don’t want to read it, you can just skip on down to the last two paragraphs, I made them special for you. so you would read them…

well if you noticed, anytime a new “game” comes out that is part of a “franchise”, the fans have these “expectations” that have been established by the past games. often, a game has to innovate inbetween titles, due to competition pushing their product more as well. you see, any time a AAA gaming studio, like activision, or blizzard, or now, 343i, makes a new game, it has to be “Better” then the last one, in order to keep the “fans” happy.

what happens however, is that many fans didn’t want the game to be “better” then the last one, they just wanted new content, added to the last one (maybe they didn’t realize it, but thats pretty much what fans are often asking for, just in new packaging.) now thats fine and all, but if they just do that, their game looses a lot of potential in the FPS war, since indie games and other FPS games are gonna do more stuff as time goes on. Big game companies don’t go out of their way to innovate their games, unless they “Know” they need to in order to make a profit.

Now this is usually the case with AAA gaming companies, since most of their CEO guys, or “The guys in the suits”, are afraid to take risks with new game ideas, AKA “Innovating”. thats why we see lots of re-iterations of games like COD, or whatever, generic FPS games big AAA companies or pumping out. If fans would stop buying the same thing with a different cover, the companies would have to take risks to push their product or risk loosing it altogether.

that said, not only did halo 4 take some creative liberties and risks, but it was also handled by a new developer then it’s predecessors (many of whom are very specialized at what they do, which allowed for them to push halo in ways it never would have had the resources to do before), who unlike the previous developer Bungie, care deeply for the story of halo, as well as the fans.

that said, for their first attempt, on picking up a franchise that was nearly killed by Halo Reach (Reach, not knowing what kind of FPS game it was), I think they have done a fantastic job. Picking up the broken pieces, they have formed a new type of halo experience, that is very different from the original, and is now decidedly more about teamwork, and tactics, not to mention skill. If you disagree with that, I don’t really care, it’s obvious due to the largely increased skill gap between the players in the community, and the games larger focus on MLG.

too agree with you, this game is not focused on appealing to the fans of previous halo “games”, so much as it is focused on appealing to fans of the halo universe as a whole. If you hadn’t noticed, they made things like “Forward Unto Dawn”, the live action movie they made to not only market the game, but introduce the players to Laskey’s background. They didn’t need to do that, it was done completely out of desire to appeal to the fans of the story, and Microsoft gave them a blank check for it. thanks to cry outs like this, Halo 4 has far surpassed it’s predecessors in just about every way conceivable. This is partially due to Microsoft throwing lots of money at the game, but also took a dedicated staff, likely more passionate about the original games then most of us.

lastly, if your still reading, halo’s origin, originally intended for the Mac, was originally supposed to be a 3rd person shooter (http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/04/when-halo-was-on-the-mac-and-was-a-totally-different-game/)
but when it was bought by Microsoft, was forced to follow popular trends and became a first person shooter. I don’t see any of the halo fans complaining about that. why is that? cause they never new about it, likely, nor did they get to play it like that.

If they had, would they have disliked the change it got when it came out on xbox?

we don’t really have the answer to that, but I can assume from history, and your comments and thoughts, that even if Halo CE was better on xbox as a FPS game then it would have been as a 3rd person shooter, you’d still have people saying “it was better before they changed it”. it happens with everything. Some people just don’t like change, it’s understandable, but new games are not marketed for those people.

so to answer your question, I feel Halo 5 will likely do even more to introduce us to the plot of the new trillogy, especially considering that halo 4 was merely their segue to it to begin with. I also feel that this game was in no way whatsoever a disappointment, and surpassed all my expectations for a sequel to a franchise from a new developer. (Could all games be transitioned to a new staff be so successful, the Sonic franchise would have been forcibly removed from Team Sonic after Sonic 2006)

Im love Halo 4, its waaay better than Reach was. Though it is missing key features that were in previous titles. Why was Firefight removed? That was the BEST mode in Reach IMO, and they removed it, an Spartan Ops doesent replace it either. The whole no theater for campaign and Ops is a let down as well, it was in H3, ODST, and Reach, then MIA in H4. Nonetheless H4 is still an amazing game.

Halo 4 is a great game. Heck, I’d say every Halo was a great game for different reasons. You can find things you don’t like in every game you play. I think Halo 4 definitely had some “change over” pains if you will, but for their first real shot at Halo, 343 did an awesome job and I think through future updates, the game will continue to get better.

This sentiment was true for Reach because it, while being a terrible Halo titled game, it was still extremely polished.

Halo 4 doesn’t even get the good game stamp.

Far too many glitches, absolutely atrocious playlist management, terrible matchmaking etc etc.

Halo 4 is not even a good game. I’ve never seen such a big budget high profile blockbuster type game with multiplayer this bad and broken. 343 obviously has no idea what they’re doing with it.

The campaign didn’t have a standout mission that I wanted to go back and play again like all the other Halo games did. The cutscenes were very impressive though.

The soundtrack is forgettable and the main menu “music” with the woman moaning is laughably bad.

If I knew what this game was gonna be like then I would have just rented it from redbox for a day and played through the campaign and been done with it.
