Halo 4 gun sounds mature conversation.

Let me start of saying 343 has done a great job on halo 4 i may not agree with everything, mabe because i am a long time halo player, but that’s a different thread.
Anyways i wanted to talk about the gun sounds from the recent video that was posted my biggest problem is the sniper, shotgun,br,dmr(ar sounds good).
I have heard that 343 used real gun sounds well i will disagree on the sniper/shotgun/br/dmr. 343 used a Barrett 50 Cal recording for the sniper lets hear what a real 50 cal sounds like you compare.

I think the Real life Barrett sounds power-full the one in h4 does not give me the sense of powerful by the SOUND.
In my opinion the guns sound meaty and not alot of power for being so far into the future i hope 343 puts some power behind these guns, who knows these might not be the full real recordings of the the game cross my fingers.

As a military organisation, and weapons developer it wouldn’t make sense to continue to deliberately make weapons sound louder and more powerful, war is about deception and discretion. Loud weapons make you more vulnerable, it’s far more likely that as we develop better weapons we’ll also be looking at trying to reduce the volume of them also. (Whilst still maintaining muzzle velocity and total damage inflicted)

I think they all sound pretty great.
The only sound I’m not digging is the sniper. A lot people like it, but after hearing the Halo CEA sniper…oh baby…

I like all the sounds. The AR by far is the best to me, but LittleDarkOne has a good point. There’s no logic in purposely making guns louder as technology progresses.

To me the BR sounds great, I like its “rolling” sound, if you know what I mean.
DMR sounds nice too, perhaps could have a little bit of an echo considering it is a marksman gun.
Shotgun is fine, sounds like a shotgun should with less echo.
The sniper does sound weird to me.

As an aside, I know realism isn’t the goal of H4. But I get kinda frustrated by the perception that volume = power.

But to the topic… I adore the new sniper sound, its definitive crack is beautiful to behold. The shotgun, well it sounds like a shotgun :S I don’t know how else it should sound?

I know what you mean mate, it does sound less brutal.

But remember back when you were walking about on the ARK in H3? those little guys in the ODST armour are the snipers bulk users by my estimate so you wouldnt want them to put a bullseye over their heads wit each shot would you?

Though ‘used real gun sounds’ and sounds like the gun are worlds appart, look at MW3 thats using ‘real gun sounds’ but sounds like a bunch of firecrackers at best. 343 have probably done the smart thing and recorded a base gunshot and changed it to be unique and fitting to the guns.

Hope thats understandable, it’s been a long day and too much russian water.

AR sounds amazing

DMR sounds powerful

Sniper Rifle sounds very weak

BR sounds somewhat weak

Splaser sounds very different from Halo 3/ODST/Reach. will get used to it though.

everything else sounds good

When I saw the Halo Bulletin videos, I noticed the weakness and lack of bass on the weapon sounds, but I think that’s because of how the videos were edited. It seems like 343i did this:

1. Make the video.

2. Add the special effects. Text, fancy diagram-like lines, et cetera. This should’ve been the non-dubstep version.

3. Quieted all in-game sounds and stripped out their bass, in preparation for the dubstep tracks. I think this actually was the non-dubstep version.

4. WUB WUB WUB WUB WUB. Wub wub wub wub wub.

And that’s why they sounded so weak.

David is right on the money. most videos are compressed, No way you can get the actual quality of the gun sounds. Just wait until you have your headset, or surround sound system hooked up. Minds will be blown, Or so I assume anyways.

I completely agree, I wondered if the sound mix was off. But droppin’ the bass, so they can drop some wubs? That makes no sense!

I think they did a great job with the sound design. Perfectly suited to make the player feel powerful when they fire it, and add to fun/ satisfying feeling when taking down another player.

The only distinct sound that I absolutely adore is the Rocket Launcher sound for some odd reason I just can’t wait to use the thing, but everything else sounds pretty good for the most part, despite the complaints of the Magnums sound.

won’t say where but i saw a leaked video of the sniper and on my speaker it sounded more like the “thundercrack from zues” or whatever some 343 rep said once…it was way better sounding in that video than the official one so take heart!

I will reserve my full judgement until the game is actually playing in my console and I hear the sounds through my wonderful headset in all of their glory, rather than through my headphones over an internet connection where the video has been compressed.

However, I would certainly like to see (hear?) more bass in the weapon sounds, as many of the weapons sound as if they’re going to fall apart at any moment.

Personally I’m alternately bemused and frustrated by this, as I have been by a lot of things that have become talking points:

  1. All we’ve got to judge the sounds on is one recorded video distributed to us on the internet. It’s quite possible that the sounds will be different in person.
  2. As mentioned above volume does not equal power.
  3. Again as mentioned above, real weapons are not manufactured to make the loudest possible noise - indeed quite the opposite due to that fact that sound can be traced by opponents, particularly in the case of weapons like the ‘classic’ sniper rifle.

To me the weapons still sound like they pack a punch without being overly loud.

I don’t think it is possible to remove the supersonic crack sound a bullet makes when it exceeds the sound barrier without making it a subsonic rifle. The rounds used in the Halo Sniper are bigger than 50cals and are supposedly travelling faster than modern day sniper bullets. It should make quite a boom. The Crack is what is missing.

Also consider you are hearing what a Spartan would hear inside a sealed armored helmet. Loud sounds like gunshots and explosions would probably be muffled.

Am I the only person who thinks the shotgun sounds like a staple gun?

No it shouldn’t. My father, who is ex military, has verified that a bullet is too small and aerodynamic to generate a sonic boom or even a crack. Besides if bullets generated those cracks or booms why would we bother putting suppressors on sniper rifles in the real world?
