Not trolling, not flaming, I’m seriously asking here, how exactly did H4 do this?
There wasn’t much improvement over the other Halo titles apart from graphics. The majority of newer features where things which Halo’s major competitors have had for years now.
Am I the only one not seeing how H4 earned game of the year? I don’t want to just assume that it was purely because of the money they’ve thrown behind it.
There are always things which I have to enlighten people on, and now I’m asking for englightenment for those who see what I am blind to…how exactly did H4 get game of the year?
Probably because most of the hype that was aroused for the game. Everybody sees a huge title making a return and the gaming community is instantly hooked and grabs the attention of all the media. Critics and game reviewers see Halo returning, hop on it, play it for a few days, beat the campaign, play several hours of multiplayer, and write a quick review. Also, a few rewards are thrown out to the game. The media probably doesn’t look at the behind the scenes, such as the community and the game’s huge change from the previous Halos. They see it as a new game and maybe compare it just a little to the previous titles but only rate the game off of what they see for the first few days or couple weeks.
And also remember that “The Game of the Year” award is based off of true opinion. They take the opinions of a bunch of game critics and reviews and compare the most positive reviews against others. Think about it… There’s really no way else to do it.
The Campaign was better the previous installments on a more mature level. The main character is humanized (to a point but a significant degree compared to previous installments) and is not this invincible badass anymore (see Didact). That relationship with Cortana is also big one and the ending is just flat out side if you’ve cared about the character.
Character development, conflict and all that good stuff that makes up a good/great story, which Halo 4. How much or how less is depending on who you ask.
The graphics (best on the console so far), pacing, enemies, and weapons are deliver enjoyment and a nice challenge to an aging game.
The MP side of things has a ton of replay value with war games for competitive battles and Spartan OPs has CG cutscenes w/ playable (yet repetitive) missions. Episodic content is still a very young concept and to see it done on a console AAA title is impressive.
Also the fact that it’s the first Halo game under a new developer and it’s a been a success so far despite the fears and doom saying.
Plus the overall hype behind the game was immense, especially close to launch. The name Halo is still a very powerful and respected mainstay in the gaming world.
You asked for reasons and i gave them to you. This isn’t from a hyper critical competitive viewpoint or a nit-picky point of view.
However, it does not change the fact that Halo 4 won any awards. Regardless if you think it didn’t deserve them or if i think Halo 4 earned them. At the end of day, such awards are just made up of opinions.
Halo 4 is a good game. I enjoy playing it. However, in my opinion, it did not deserve game of the year. It really didn’t do anything innovative other than the presentation of Spartan Ops as a weekly experience, sort of like a TV show, and even then it loses points for recycling play-spaces. So its not really mind blowing. Other than that it brings nothing new to the table, and actually comes with fewer features than its predecessors. It has less custom game options, forge options, and theater options. Of course, these things may be added later on, but that brings me to my next point…
They shipped the game with a bunch of glitches and missing features. When I think “Game of The Year” I don’t associate that with an incomplete experience for the player. I don’t hate 343i for leaving some things out, but, if I’m going to be a critic here, I can’t help but recognize that many aspects of Halo 4 come off as rushed and reek of poor follow through on the developer’s part. There were many other games this year that offered a more innovative and complete experience for the player, and arguably gave the consumer more for his or her money than Halo 4.
So, again, while I enjoy Halo 4, I do see where you are coming from OP. If I’m being objective, I would not have awarded Halo 4 GOTY. Just my opinion.
I think Halo 4 became game of the year because gamer’s still have love for the Halo series. I don’t thing Halo 4 won the game for being the best but it was from name recognition.
I don’t want people to get the wrong impression that I don’t like H4. I’ve played it every day since the release, I do find it to be a fun, enjoyable experience.
I just don’t get how it beats every other game released this year.
Shoulder shrug
I have read all the comments though, and yeah I guess the story was changed up with master chief meeting his match, he is still clearly invincible though given that he…

^Sorry I don’t know how to do that trick with the “Click to show spoilers”
I guess it is just too subjective, I was thinking that they had like a rating system where they compared and contrasted what each game in 2012 had going for it, but I guess releasing H4 when they did, allowed it to have enough hype/buzz for when the rewards hit, still fresh in people’s minds.
If you wanted to do that Spoiler tag trick you look at the dark blue capitalized BB option. It tells you the command for it and what you need to type.

I intentionally put a space before the / to show you the code. Make sure not to do that when you are typing in a spoiler so the text is hidden. Like this
