Halo 4 freezes

Hello,

First let me say that I never use forums, so sorry if I do something idiotic.

Second, my other games work fine. I’ve been playing Red Dead and ODST for a while now to try and be sure it’s not my Xbox, and I’m fairly certain it’s not at fault.

Anyway, my Halo 4 freezes. Campaign? Freezes before I even get out of cryo-whatever pod. Customs? Freezes after a few minutes. Forge? Yep. Don’t have live so haven’t tried matchmaking.

I’ve tried this with all the variants I can think of. With the discs installed and not installed, on two different hard drives, then formatted them both and did it again. I also tried campaign with no hard drive at all, and, predictably, it froze. Then I went back to Gamestop and got a replacement copy of Halo 4.

The issue persists.

What to do? Help me, internets. You’re my only hope.

I guess I’m going to get yet another copy tomorrow if they let me, and hope that it works.

If anyone asks, or even responds for that matter, I don’t have a slim xbox, it’s an older elite.

Oh, also, this is either the screen straight up freezing and I have to turn off my xbox with the front button, or it goes to black screen and I have to turn off my xbox with the front button. This isn’t kicking me out to menus or anything.

Is the disc smudge a lot? and if that don’t work try and get someone to look at the Xbox

Nah the discs have all been perfectly clean, right out of the box all fresh like.

Clear the system cache and see if that does anything.

You could try:

  1. Install the game so the game disc does not spin therefore saving your xbox building up heat. An overheating issue could cause your xbox to freeze. Best to install games so the disc doesn’t build up excess heat. link for instructions

  2. Clear your xbox 360 system cache. link for instructions

Clearing the cache did nothing. It just gave me a disc unreadable error in the prologue cutscene.

I guess I need a new disc drive?

If so, why do my other games work fine still. As I said originally, I’ve been playing Red Dead and ODST today to see if other games crash, and they have not crashed like Halo 4 has.

As I said, Ozzy, I have tried this with the game installed and uninstalled. Neither relieves the issue.

Try changing your xbox from horizontal to vertical standing, or vice versa then try loading the game. Occasionally this will help the disc read.

With all that you’ve tried it sounds like you have a crappy disc drive or an xbox that overheats continuously.

Ok, I’ll try this, though to be honest I’m not very hopeful.

Even if it is the disc drive, though, I’m still confused why my other games would play normally, but Halo 4 for some reason is being a jerk.

Any ideas on trying to cool down my xbox if it is overheating that is the problem?

It doesn’t seem particularly warm, though, at this point, I’ll try anything.

> Clear the system cache and see if that does anything.

Oh yeah this happend with me in Skyrim and another game.

Well I guess I have a 60 dollar paperweight then. It saddens me to say this but I guess I’m not going to play Halo 4 if another new copy doesn’t fix the issue. I’m not getting a new 360 just to play one game.

Thanks for trying to help, though, folks.

I had the same problem, to fix it go onto your console settings and change your display settings to 480p http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906663 this worked for me, although it still crashes occasionally after campaign levels and multiplayer matches.

Mine hasn’t frozen during the game or menus at all - it’s actually been great and quite smooth. I installed to my hard drive before launching it for the first time as well.

It does freeze, however, every single time I try to launch Halo Waypoint from within the Halo 4 Main Menu. The menu music fades, it goes to a black screen, and my Xbox freezes and I can’t push the guide button and have to force it off and back on.

This happens every time I try to launch Waypoint from within Halo 4. It’s not like I expect to do it very often to be honest, but just seems a little bit odd.

i also have this freezing problem, but only in the campaign. Like on the first mission, after chief says that he thought that there was a truce with the covenant it freezes and then goes back to the main menu. I can’t even finish the campaign!

Mine tends to freeze whenever I kill a watcher in one of the towers on Shutdown.

Trying to do legendary solo, but this is a huge pain (I’ve had to restart several times). I got past the first tower by just running from the last batch of watchers, The 2nd tower is a bit more problematic as they’re everywhere.

I took the disk out of the packaging on launch day and it’s sat in the console since. Installed to drive.

Going to clear the cache and see if that helps anything.
