Halo 4-Flood cover connection

As I’m sure many of you know by now, Halo Cryptum and Halo Primordium use cover art based on Halo 4 concept art. All other novels have used artwork of their own, or have they? Halo: The Flood, the second Novel released, is based on Halo Combat Evolved. At that time John 117 used the MJOLNIR Mk V shown here and here.

When the first three novels received updated versions, they also received new cover art. Here’s where things come together. The Flood depicted the Master Chief dual wielding SMGs while battling the flood in some sort of cave. While SMGs appeared in neither the game or the novel, this in itself seemed unimportant. The true error was the depiction of the Master Chief. The new cover, shown here, features armor very different to the Mark V, in fact it looks very similar to the armor shown in the Halo 4 announcement trailer. Look at this and this. The helmet, chest and shoulders share a distinct similarity with those seen on the cover of the Flood.

I am suggesting the possibility that the new cover of Halo: The Flood is actually concept art for Halo 4. What could this mean for the game? Two major things:

  1. The reappearance of the Flood. The cover shows infection forms and tentacles meaning that they could return in their traditional forms as well as larger forms.
  2. The return of dual wielding and SMGs. The Chief is holding SMGs on the cover.

I’m not claiming anything I’ve said here as fact, i am merely pointing out something that I have noticed. Leave your thoughts and opinions.

Good stuff. I always wondered why a tentacled flood form is shown on the cover, that I don’t remember being in the game. If ‘The Flood’ really does use H4 concept art, then maybe 'First Strike’s cover art is also H4 concept art. I think ‘The Fall Of Reach’ is already ruled out though…

The armor in the “Definitive” novels is pretty obviously based off of Mjolnir Mk IV from Halo Wars:

That’s not actually MC btw.

But it doesn’t make sense in The Flood, because MC was wearing Mk V so it should look like Halo CEA’s armor.

I had thought of the First Strike cover when writing this. The armor does look significantly more like Mk IV but the helmet does bare a slight resemblance to the Halo 4 one. The thing that really strikes me is the buildings on the cover. They look a great deal like Forerunner buildings seen in concept art for Halo 4. If it is in fact Halo 4 concept art then this could be an indication of other Spartans being encountered in the game.

Legend ST, I’ll respond to your post when I have a little more time.

I’m a quite aware that it is based on the Mk IV, or at least appears this way. Before I continue I would just like to stress that this is all opinion and I am not trying to claim it as fact. I formed this theory when I looked at the armor of The Flood. While it does look like the Mk IV, so does the Halo 4 armor. They share very similar chests and shoulders. The point wear the cover armor and the Halo 4 armor differ from the Mk IV is the helmet. To me the helmet (and shoulders too) of the Halo 4 and Flood armor look very similar. Because the covers of Primordium and Cryptum are Halo 4 concept art, it seems quite possible to me that other covers (such as The Flood) may also share a similar origin.

Just as an interesting side note, I don’t know if you’ve seen this, it’s the original Mark IV design for Halo Wars. Looks a little like the Halo 4 armor, don’t you think?

I hope we see a tentacle flood form in H4.

> I hope we see a tentacle flood form in H4.

That could actually make a really interesting enemy. It would be far more abstract and unpredictable than any enemy we’ve fought before.

Maybe it would wip you with its really long tentacles and you have to find it somewhere in the near by area(unless it walks) to kill it?

I’m extremely confident that the Flood will return for the new trilogy; and that it will become a major player in the conflict. I’m also just as confident that we’ll be seeing forms that are depicted outside the main games, and completely new. 343 have Halo Wars, Legends and The Mona Lisa, which have already expanded upon the look and diversity of the parasite. The Flood will look more menacing than ever.

I was thinking they could move like an octopus. Like this, only faster. Imagine if you saw that crawling on a wall!

For the sake of the game I reeaallllyyy hope your right the flood from the Mona Lisa are ridiculously epic and insanely vile especially that Proto-Graveming YEESH! it looked like a fleshy demon with all those screaming skulls inside it. They really portrayed the flood as a real hell I really hope they are like that in game i want to jump at the hideous sight of a decrepit oozing infection form.

I really hope they use some of the Origins forms, especially the giant blob one. Fighting that would be amazing!

I’m yet to watch the Mona Lisa (I read it in Evolutions though) but to me the screaming skulls thing sounds like a bit much. I would like the flood to be a little more horrifying at least.

Their not exactly screaming skulls they are the people who got absorbed into the Proto-Gravemind, (which by the way looks so realistic ) but their bodies are still under control by the flood so their slimy skulls are rubbing up against the Proto- Gravemind’s fleshy wall as if they were screaming to get put it looks horrid.

Oh, I see what you mean, that’d be kind of cool. Any idea which episode of the Mona Lisa it’s in? I’d love to see it in action.

Imagine walking through a Forerunner city level, looking up, and seeing one of those things perched on a building. What a sight that would be, eh. Would be pretty sweet if we had to pilot an aircraft and assist in taking down multiple colossal Flood forms.

The Mona Lisa (in terms of the horror) and Halo Origins (in terms of the scale) were both great depictions of the Flood. Look at an infected Elite in The Mona Lisa; talk about horrificly beastly. The fact they included the Juggernaut spells good things about their future in the games.

I’m looking forward to seeing what the Proto-Gravemind looks like in CE.

Oh dear god that was awesome! I think a little bit of wee came out! Reminds me of finding Keyes in the Proto-Gravemind. Seeing something like that in game would be incredible.
