in halo reach and many multiplayer games, there is what i would call a MASSIVE problem with the hosting mechanics.
just today i played a game of squad battle where literally every single last person in the ENTIRE GAME had red bar. bad internet connections happen, things spike, i get that. the problem was, this lasted for nearly 4 minutes before the host was booted. after which, we were unable to play for more than 2 seconds without the game cutting out and showing us the players in the lobby.
please 343, if someone is hosting the game and everyone drops to less than 3 bars of connection for more than 30 seconds, SWITCH THE HOST.
dont make players have to wait for 4 minutes of everyone in the entire lobby having red bar connection. it makes absolutely no sense that you would let someone who is a TERRIBLE host stay the host of the game when CLEARLY his internet cannot support the game.
what do you guys think? should the host be switched if everyone is lagging (less than 3 bar connection) for 30 seconds?

I agree, and I also think there should be a timer similar to CoD:BO when the migration ends so you know when your about to play again.

lol all those IT IS!!! yoink… those are no fun its not even a word lol
anyways yeah im sure one day dedicated servers will be cheap or internet connections will improve everywhere but for now it doesn’t happen to me enough that i would truly be concerned about it.
No, they wouldn’t. At least not without introducing new problems.
If you had dedicate servers in the United States only, players from other parts of the world would get screwed because they’d now always be playing on a bad host. Even if DL/UL of the servers was great, there’s still the problem of latency which arises solely from distance to the server.
If you tried to solve that problem by having dedicated servers in other parts of the world as well, Europeans would be playing only with Europeans, Americans only with Americans, and so on. Also not a good solution.
Running and maintaining dedicated servers costs money. The more servers you need, the more it costs. And if H4 were to bring the Halo series back to its former glory (which I hope it does), it would require A LOT of servers because of the large number of players.
Online play would basically be over except for custom games the moment 343i/MS decide the turn off the servers.
The only real solution is to improve the parts of the networking code that checks for suitable hosts, and that handles transfering host in case the original one leaves.
