I think that armor abilities were a great idea in theory. The concept of them is great but once they’re actually in game it really seems to make it imbalanced. Equipment in Halo 3 never really seemed imbalanced to me. I think that there could be a way to change equipment for Halo 4 that could make the armor ability fans and the equipment fans happy. I also think there should be gametypes without this new form of equipment for the fans who just hate both armor abilities and equipment all together.
Halo: Reach - Armor Abilities
Active Camouflage
Armor Lock
Drop Shield
Evade
Hologram
Jet Pack
Sprint
Halo 3 - Equipment
Bubble Shield
Deployable Cover
Flare
Portable Grav-Lift
Power Drain
Radar Jammer
Regenerator
Trip Mine
Together let’s try to rethink equipment. Bungie really seemed the think that equipment meant it has to be an object that is thrown. Equipment doesn’t need to be a device that is thrown or dropped. Also, various equipments could be combined. For example, in Halo: Reach the drop shield is a combination of the drop shield and regenerator in Halo 3. Active Camo in Halo: Reach is a combination of the camouflage power-ups (also the camouflage armor ability that can be found in Halo 3’s campaign) and radar jammer.
Personally, I think this is how multiplayer should work in Halo 4…
In all of Halo you start with default weapons and grenades. I think in Halo 4 you should start with default weapons, grenades, and a default piece of equipment (something simple, maybe like a jet pack that boosts you about 10 yards in any direction you look once every so many seconds). If you do not like that piece of equipment you should go find a different piece of equipment located somewhere on the map. It would be just like wanting more grenades or a new weapon, you have to find it if you want it. Also, once any piece of equipment is used up it is gone. It will not magically recharge and be able to used again in a few seconds like armor abilities.
Now, I’m going to list some types of equipment I think could be in Halo 4…
Halo 4 - Equipment
Drop Shield - The drop shield in Halo 4 would work just like it does in Halo: Reach.
Active Camouflage - The active camouflage would work just like it does in Halo: Reach but the camouflage is stronger. Also, there should only be one, if any, on a map. It would be treated like a power weapon, one person map, like the energy sword and rocket launcher.
Over Shield - The over shield would be a power equipment like the active camouflage, by that I mean there would only be one, if any, on a map. The over shield in Halo 4 would give you an extra shield that would last as long as you don’t lose it and could possible drain enemy shields (and recharge their own?) for a few seconds from activating (30 seconds?) if they are in melee range. The player with the over shield would glow so the enemy knew they had an over shield. This would combine the original over shield power-up and the drain shield equipment from Halo 3.
Jet Pack - Jet packs are more of a piece of equipment than an ability. They will work just like in Halo: Reach, but (like previously mentioned) they will be lost once used up and do not magically recharge.
Jet Booster - The jet booster would boost your player in any direction you look a specific distance (maybe 10 yards?) and would be the only equipment that can recharge itself (recharges every 10 seconds?). The reason why I think this should be the only one that can recharge itself is because I think it could be used to help travel through areas and would replace sprint and evade.
Trip Mines (not Halo 4 equipment, but a possible new grenade in Halo 4) - The trip mine could be placed on any surface (floor, wall, ceiling). If stepped on or bumped into the player dies. It would also appear small until attached to a surface. Once attached, it will open from a grenade sized object and become as large and noticeable as the trip mine in Halo 3.
Flare (not Halo 4 equipment, but a possible new grenade in Halo 4) - The flare would work just as it did in Halo 3, but would be the size of a typical grenade.
Alright, that is just my two cents. So please contribute. I’m quite interested in hearing the fans of Halo’s new ideas for equipment.
