Halo 4 energy sword lunge?

I have another one of my random questions, and i would like to see your opinions :slight_smile:

Throughout the halo 4 videos ive seen, the energy sword has lost a lot of its “lunge” length. People believe that the lunge was shortened, because <mark>sprint + lunge is too overpowered.</mark> I disagree with this idea, as sprint + energy sword in reach wasnt that all overopwered if you get your shots right. Another rumor is that 343 havent animated the lunge yet, therefor there was not much lunge, or that lunge hasn’t been edited in yet.

Now since the sword has lost its lunge to make it less powerful, does this mean that the shotgun will be less powerful as well, because of sprint? I’ts just plain silly. I honestly diddnt think I was too overpowered with sword + sprint in reach. Anyway, if 343 are concerned about the over poweredness, I would suggest that the sword have halo 2 physics. Eg: If your far from your opponent, you will still lunge, but only take down their shields, and if your right up close, you will lunge and kill them. I think this would be a reasonable idea, and quite equal to the shotgun.

I think the lunge in Halo 4 is the best lunge in all of the games. No n00by sprint and sword combo and I think I saw that when you have lunged forward and killed someone you are being very slow for a while. It balances the sword a bit more, and in Reach. It was überoverpowered…

Why on Earth would they nerf it from Reach? It was already horribly underpowered in Reach. The lunge needs to be extended back to what it was in Halo 2 or 3. It was hardly even a power weapon in Reach.

And if you think it was overpowered in Halo Reach, you’re wrong. It just means you suck at the game.

My biggest problem with sword lunge in Reach is mutual death VS shotgun. I actually liked the melee knocback. It gave you a chance against sword. Not a very good one, and I usually died anyway. But it was good to go down fighting.

You have no clue what you are talking about. I guarantee you I don’t suck at any Halo game. Give me Sword and I guarantee you I kill at least 5 people. How isn’t Sprint/Sword powerful? I’m not even a power weapon -Yoink!- and I know that having the Sword results in domination for whoever holds it, if played intelligently. Hardly even a power weapon… people on the internet absolutely astound me with what they will try to pass off as truth. I think it’s smart to have a smaller lunge distance considering you can sprint at the person.

Sword block was the worst idea ever. It didn’t make logical sense, for one, and it was awful for gameplay. All it did was rob sword users of kills they deserved, and give noobs that happened to tap B at the right moment a free kill they didn’t deserve.

I remember one occasion in Reach where I saw 3 idiots standing together and not really shooting, it was the easiest triple kill I ever saw. I lunge at the first guy, sword blocked. Lunge at the second guy, sword blocked. Lunge at the third guy, sword blocked. That is me being robbed of three whole kills. That is total bull. The Sword was complete rubbish in Reach, the Halo 2 or 3 Sword needs to return.

I will agree 100% with Firelord Roku. Sword Block was soooooo frustrating. I feel like the Sword will be balanced in H4. Everyone having Sprint will make Sword extremely powerful but the whole ‘being slowed down when you run at someone and are being shot’ will make it balanced. But grrrrr I know I’ll get frustrated with Sword Block at least once lol.

I doubt Sword Block will be in Halo 4, it’s yet to appear in any gameplay so far, and they removed it in TU, which implies they do not like the mechanic.

I’ll be very disappointed if it is in the game though.

No, it was overpowered. Especially on small maps.

I honestly think they’ve reduced the lunge too much. Look at 3:38 in that video.

Sure, sprint + Sword was a little OP in Reach and as such the lunge definitely needs reducing - but now sprint has a slowdown mechanic it’s not going to be as effective to just run straight at someone with it. Also, everyone now has sprint so there’s also a higher chance of escape.

Another minor gripe, I’m not loving the activation noise for the Sword. It sounds too weak as it is.
IMO it needs to be something powerful, akin to a lightning bolt.

I like how they made it less. After all, Sprint as default + an AA + Tactical and Support specializations? Probably going to be a powerful weapon in the end if you know how to use it. However, 343 has made sure that if you simply hold an energy sword and sprint at people, if the person you are attacking has a good shot, you will go out of sprint and can’t really do crap.

No. Incorporate that and the sword would be pretty much useless.
It makes no sense and is an extremely frustrating mechanic.

Tsquared was on video saying “It’s great, it’s back to it’s old lunging” so I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Have you actually PLAYED it? Or are you just speculating?

im glad its the way it is! it is in fact a sword, wich is a melee weapon. but in reach, it has a longer lunge range then the shotgun’s 1 shot kill range. this is wrong. the sword should have normal melee range, and the shotgun should have decent gun range. (like in CE. you could actualy use that shotgun)

(For the people up there) I disagree about sword block. Besides the fact that it takes a lot of skill to do it in the first place (the window between him pulling the trigger and the actual kill being miniscule), be honest, how many times has the block actually saved the person who used it when you tried to kill him? More likely than not, he blocked and you simply tapped the trigger again, killing him.

I hope it comes back. Giving people a (tiny) chance against swords instead of making anyone weilding it a walking death-machine would be nice.

Geez i’ve got no problem with the shorter range, as long as it works… Halo 3 sword was badly bugged, and that block on reach was bullblam. Speaking of OP, i do hope they nerf the DMR.
