Halo 4 Enemies and Factions Summary

Hey all

This topic will cover the confirmed and suspected enemies (and factions) within Halo 4, as I have seen many questions regarding this. I plan on keeping this updated as new information is released, bringing as much information about the enemies as possible. All input would be very much appreciated, as I won’t be able to find everything, and (although I have read both Cryptum and Primordium) I’m no master of Halo lore! :stuck_out_tongue:

Anything not mentioned in the summaries is either not-confirmed, or I don’t know about it. If you’re not sure, or have extra information, shoot up a post, I’ll be interested to read it! Also, If you think you can re-word my (often mishappen :P) sentences, or just have any additions, feel free to tell me.

In-depth Summaries [Speculation will be in italics]
>Prometheans: The Prometheans are the “highest form” of warrior-forerunner. It therefore makes sence that the combat-AIs seen in the previews are Promethean built. Note that these AIs [Crawlers, Knights, Watchers] are not actual Promethean Forerunners. It is currently unknown whether all Forerunners, if there are even any left, are on the same faction.
Crawlers: Dog-like Promethean combat AI. Seems fairly weak, doesn’t appear to have weapons. However, being very fast and having a reasonable melee attack, they can apparently overpower through numbers. Numerous crawlers can be summoned by a Watcher.
Knights: Humanoid Promethean combat AI. Has been shown to weild both Scattershot and Light Rifle. It is likely that multiple types of knight exist, as hinted toward in the Gamespot interview. “The Lancer” has been revealed to have the ability to teleport short distances. It is unknown whether it is the Lancer, or another type of Knight, that can spawn up Watchers from their back.
Watchers: Flying Promethean combat AI. Are able to attack with some kind of in-built gun. Have the following abilities; creating a temporary shield; spawning crawlers; “throwing” back thrown grenades.
Cryptum: The gigantic ball that Master chief encounters during the footage is a Cryptum. A cryptum is effectively a “Stasis chamber” that allows (to our knowledge, only forerunners) to be preserved, possibly indefinately. In the novel, a Forerunner’s presence was required to open the Cryptum. (Thanks to raindoc for pointing out the press release photo name confirms the sphere as a Cryptum.)The appearance of the cryptum hints toward a Forerunner’s return. And, if there’s one cryptum, there may well be more.

>Covenant: Cortana refers to a group of two Grunts, a Jackal and an Elite as “covenant” in the gameplay demo. Although we can’t be positive, we can assume that these covanent forces are still followers of “The Great Journey”, or they are outcasts from the (assumed) disbanded covanent forces. If these theories are correct, we can expect more than Grunts, Jackals and Elites. However, nothing has been confirmed.
Grunts: Seem like the generic grunt characters from the previous Halo’s, with a nice graphical update.
Jackals: Again, generic Jackals from the previous Halo’s. It is unknown whether rifle-weilding Jackals will be in Halo 4.
Elites: Again, generic Elites from the previous Halo’s. Only Minor,Major and Zealots have been revealed thus far.

Suspected or Theorised Factions or Enemies
The following discussion is speculation, either due to hints from novel/trailers, or logical progression from earlier games. If you have a valid theory, call it out here; I might make a list of theories in this section.

>Forerunners/Prometheans: It is unknown whether actual Forerunners will be in Halo 4. So far, we have only seen the involvement of Promethean combat AI. This has led to speculation that Forerunners, specifically the Didact or the Librarian, will be in Halo 4. Remember that Forerunner machines/AI have been in previous Halo’s, without the Foreruners (Sentinels, from Halos 1-3). The involvement of the Cryptum also further indicates Forerunner presence.
Sentinels: Sentinels have played an important part in the Forerunner background of Halo (both in novels and games), and are speculated to be in the game. No evidence except this has been revealed.
Engineers: Engineers are Forerunner creations. They are therefore speculated to be in Halo 4. No other evidence supports this. They are known to be non-combatents (except when made suicide bombers, or shield generators by covenant).

>Covenant species: As Cortana refers to the Elite, Jackal and Grunts in the gameplay footage as “Covenant”, it is speculated that Drones, Brutes, Hunters and Prophets will be in Halo 4. No other evidence supports this.

>The Flood: It has been confirmed that we will not be fighting the flood in Halo 4. This does not cut them out of the picture completely; they may be there to help us, or even just for canon reasons.

As a second thought, Reserved page, just in case.

> → Ball/Sphere craft: We aren’t aware of what this is. It has been suspected that this is a spacecraft for the Didact, as there are minor references to a similar craft in the novels.

it’s a Cryptum - we know that from the press release.
also, a Cryptum =/= a spacecraft, it’s a piece of forerunner tech similar in function to a stasis chamber, used by Warrior-Servants to exile themselves. one can survive millenia in one of these things, but only another forerunner/reclaimer can open it and then the occupant needs some time to regenerate (the body is actually mummyfied inside the cryptum, but can be restored).

Oh, really?
I initially assumed It wasn’t a cryptum, as the way Didact stayed dormant in the novel kind of indicated that it was a stationary…machine?

Anyway, I suppose that, thinking about it, It has been a long time since the events of the novel series; I guess it has to be a cryptum. And I hadn’t seen the press release, oops :P.

Many thanks for the input :).

EDIT: Updated info on Cryptum. Interestingly, during the novels, not only was a Forerunner required to open the cryptum, but the Didact (who was inside) was very weak after revival. Possible plotline point?

yeah, me too. flying bed is weird.

I think that the Sphere is the caretaker of the “installation” or offensive bias or even mendicant bias.

The Caretaker sounds most likely (out of my possabilities)

I’d certainly like to know why the Sphere is active, and why it’s on the shield world; as well as why it (if it did) brought both the Forward unto Dawn, and the Infinity down. Secrets within secrets, :D.

Anyway, I’ll update the information in a few hours when I wake up, should anyone have additions

The 343 GS “splinter” from Primordium brought it there (if the ship in that book is the Infinity) cant remember if it is…

Either way i cant frikkin wait!!!

3 factions because 343 are sticking with what works and what works is doing exactly what has come before and being all things to all fans and abject cowardice. Battle Rifle + DMR + triple wielding.

Faction 1 the UNSC:

The UNSC have become GIRLY PEACE -Yoink!- MEN and this is to make Political Points about how War Is Great. They fly their PANSY SHIP (which is called Infinity because 242 has excellent writers who can come up with names as good as Pillar of Autumn and Forward unto Dawn) into Space and The Forerunney teleport them to where Chief is because Chief needs Warthogs. They also start to die because that’s what they deserve for becoming Peace Police Prissy Pods.

Cortana is part of the UNSC faction and she has got Robot Flu AKA Rampant craziness because she has been awake for 8 years which is 1 more than 7 and it is time to revisit the Rampancy storyline which was resolved in Halo 3. She is going to become The Villain which is a welcome return to an abandoned Halo 1 plot because 343’s excellent writers are hard at work. Watch out! We can see Cortana’s face onscreen so that we can feel extra special every time she says “John” (100x in the first level).

Mr Chief is back and in new pyjamas. He gets his new costume in a great adventure he has before landing on the Forerunner planet from Halo 3’s Legendary ending. I hope that means we see him wake up twice!

THE COVENANT Faction 2:

THE COVENANT are the wicked men who wake up Chief for his great adventure. 343 Systems have come up with a great and revolutionary idea that will surprise you: The Elites are Covenant (“Covers”) again. I read in a magazine that some Elite would not be happy with the peace brokered in Halo 3, but it is an even better plot twist to have Elites that have rekindled a wonderful friendship with the Brutes and The Prophets so the Covenant can be once more! This will have the benefit of avoiding confusion amongst players who will remember fighting Elites in Halo’s Reach, and would not understand if Chief and Elites were friends. I love blasting Covers!

NEW FACTION INCOMING IT IS FORERUNNER:

Forerunners are back and it is an ancient evil that has awakened. Here Microsoft Halo Solutions have been very clever indeed: it is a return to the 3 faction balance of Human/Cover-nent/Flood from Halos past, AND ALSO the little robots basically look like electric Flood. It is important not to confuse your player base with New Things and here Halosoft will not risk any quarters. Some Forerunner men look like Elites and Bionocle, which is a brilliant marketing tie-in when you try to think about it. The Forerunney has many powers which as mentioned is vital for Chief to have the latest UNSC guns and hats.

As you can see there are 3 terrific factions having a fight and the Halo Video Series is in excellent hands. Thank you.

@op don’t you mean 3 Elites revealed?

Elite minor
Elite major (first seen in Spartan Ops gameplay)
Elite zealot (identified by GameInformer and McFarlane)

Ahh yes, I forgot about the toys reveal.I’ll update the post. Thanks.

@Red Bear
I’m not sure what to say O.o. It was certainly an interesting read :P. But in general, I think i’ll agree that 343 will probably stick to the 3-faction approach. It’s worked well so far.

Update: I’ve added in what we know of the flood (that we won’t be fighting them).

iTeKon! Sometimes I’m not sure what to say either because it’s quite overwhelming what a generous job i343 is doing as they learn to make Halo games even after all the Halos were blown up and turned off! The ingenious ways they have arranged 3 factions to be so similar to what has been seen before is just one way you can see this.
