Halo 4 dedicated servers

Dedicated servers are becoming a much more popular and important part of console gaming, a lot of big games such as BF3, FIFA 12, GOW3 have all got dedicated servers now. Halo is a much more competitive game as far as I’m concerned than any of the above, and therefore host plays the biggest factor then it would in any of the others. The old halo fans have been screaming for dedicated servers since halo 2. This is genuinely one of the biggest things I will take into account in whether I will buy halo 4. I have bought every halo up to this point and it would be unfortunate to not buy the latest, but as I am so used to playing on dedicated servers on the above games I don’t think I can go back, or should have to. 343 have more than enough money to fund this. I play competitively, I play to win, for a challenge, when host determines in really tight games who wins and loses, it instantly removes any purpose of a rank/record because there is no even playing field. Your thoughts?

Well i had a lot of problems with host domination a few years back but since i upgraded to a wireless surfboard router i have not really noticed the problem. i still stink but i couldn’t tell you who the host is in any given game. so i am inclined to say you may need to upgrade your hardware if you are still suffering from noticeable host domination Rather than have them spend that much in hardware to improve your game.

its absolutely irrelevant how good your connection is, host isn’t given to a player with good internet. and you can have the best internet in the world if someone is on the other side of the world, it lags on host full stop.

If Gears 3 got dedicated servers Halo 4 should get it also. Halo is a bigger and much more important franchise for MS.

forums are ridiculous, you ask anybody playing on the game, especially competitively dedicated servers or not they will always say dedicated, there are literally NO disadvantages for gamers, this ‘poll’ does not accurately reflect the true communities opinion, forum nerds just don’t understand playing to win and how it requires fairness. There is a difference between lagging because someone is downloading or your internet is bad, and lagging because simply the difference in location of sets of gamers is vast. Especially when host is seemingly chose at random, or with no easy pattern. There were hundreds of posts on bungie about people trying to figure out how to get host, just like they did when they cheated on halo 2 to bridge the connection. That is how much of a deal it is.

I agree Andy.

lol so far 5 people have voted against dedicated servers. Who in their right mind prefers having their sprees reset when host quits and love watching a random black screen pop up to break the flow of gameplay. Not to mention have multiple power weapons respawn and randomly lose your armor ability in the process.

exactly flying foam, it makes no sense why people would vote no… probably people employed by 343 to save budget…

The people voting no are just online warriors.

Microsoft’s biggest franchise should at least have dedicated servers. Here’s the deal:

    • A crapload of Sony first party games which don’t have 1/5th the community of Halo, have dedicated servers.
    • PSN is free, yet Sony manages to pay for servers and they’re not even in good financial positions (much worse than Microsoft at least).
    • Gears of War 3 has dedicated servers, no doubt Epic Games is paying the bill for that, not Microsoft.
Microsoft need to get real and make my Xbox Live Gold subscription worth something. I don’t use any of the crap they offer, only play online, and it’s not free. They know this is why most people pay for Gold, which is why online play will never be free, so make it count and give us dedicated servers.

That said, Halo’s netcode is good, probably the best P2P netcode, but it’s still P2P and no matter how good the netcode, you can’t escape some of the problems that brings at times.

I absolutely agree, very well summarised Tiagoportugal.

343 take note. I also saw the latest video on halo, and one person mentioned the maps being designed for competitive purposes, and true competitiveness and reflection of that is nullified by p2p host.

Dedicated servers are not some magic cure for lag. All you do is replace.one set of problems with another set. And how fun do you think it will be when some kid gets butthurt about losing and hits the entire server offline? You can be in a completely unrelated game and still be effected.

er Satansreverence people can’t just turn the entire server offline, that’s called HACKING. Also, these other games I previously mentioned work absolutely PERFECTLY, that’s right ZERO lag. I.e. NO problems.

You connection to the game becomes 100% consistent when playing on a server near you. When playing a P2P game your ping varies every single game, and its a dice roll.

Host changes alone are a huge problem, that should’t even exist in this day and age. The second a host changes, all of the optimization put into providing a solid host goes out the window. It disrupts the flow of the game, and creates another dice roll in the middle of a match.

Then there’s the fact that P2P gives one player ZERO ping. While it might not seem like a big deal, due tot eh way halo plays out, its actually a huge problem in all games, and even worse in games like swat and snipers.

As far as players using a DDOS on a server, players could simply jump on the next closest server until it’s back up. Not to mention, its much harder to boot a server than an individual players connection and that the brevity of doing so is more likely to attract legal action agaisnt a player.

This will never happen, the amount of money it would take to support the initial boom at launch would be in the millions of dollars, and within 5-6 months they’d have extra servers not being uses, just wasting money.

For everyone who says: “Dedicated servers are not the solution, if you have bad connection with P2P you will affect the same situation even whit them!” and other bull…t like that i have to say something:

i’m italian, here connection is the worst in almost entire Europe, playing on P2P results impossible almost half the times;
Casually, a friend of mine use to play FIFA 12 (dedicated servers) with his magnificent connection (640 kbps down, 384 up) and always ( better: in 90% of cases) his matches are totally lag free.

I’m also tired of listen: “Dedicated servers are too expensive bla… bla… bla…”

Microsoft (and so 343i) is one of the richer (if not the richest) and greater world’s economic corporation.

Halo is one of the more beautiful and also remunerative franchise in gaming industry of all time.

It needs dedicate servers, especially now that so many games are adopting this solution for their multiplayer.

This franchise deserve the best technology possible, no way of discussion about this.

I apologize in advance for every grammar error, syntax monstruosity etc etc
But this is Italy, we have the worst school (and university) system in the world… (and also i’m not that great English student  )
