HALO 4 COMPETITIVE PLAY

I am curious as to what the thoughts are as far as competitive play in Halo 4. I know the arena mode in Reach is incredibly unsuccessful and I am a fan of the Halo 3 ranking system. I think they should fix the boosting glitches and still leave a playlist for the Halo 3 ranking system since Area in Reach is not very enticing to anyone. In fact if you look at the total number of online members in Area is always exceptionally low. 343 actually has to offer credit bonuses in order to get people to play it. Also, I think that is it annoying to run into a bunch of crappy Inheritors that play the game all the time but are not truly skilled. Halo 3s system defiantly negated that a little more. Please let me know your thoughts.

Welcome to the waypoint forums!!!

I believe that if 343i really get things truly balanced. This could all work.

Neither H3’s system, nor Arena will be in Halo 4. A new ranking system viable only to you and possibly to your frinds will be there next to the progression system.

Halo 3’s ranking system did not reflect skill as much as people believe.

It merely reflects the overall winning.

I’m glad all these kinda rank/skill things are being changed.

Halo 3 1-50 definently gave me something to strive for. (Although I never actually got a 50. Got into the 40s)
But bad teammates made me rage quit.

Halo Reach arena was just boring. Everybody was bad. No different from Team Slayer honestly. Got rated like once for a day. Not even cared about leagues.

I probably won’t buy halo 4 if it doesn’t have a skill based ranking system similar to halo 3 / 2, not in a 1-50 style but just in that you have a rank of some kind that will go up or down depending on how well you do that everyone can see. (preferably playlist specific)

I just have no reason to play halo if it doesn’t have the ranking system, its the exact reason why I (and so many others) got bored and quit playing reach after the first few months.

I’ve got plenty of other fun games I’m enjoying right now, plus a world of warcraft expansion is coming out right around the same time as halo 4 so I’ll certainly be playing that a ton.

Though I’d much rather keep playing halo, I love the game and hope it continues to do well (so maybe we can see a skill based ranking system in the future if not in halo 4!).

What I’m hoping to do is just move back to playing halo full time like I was in halo 2 and 3 where by I didn’t really play any other games at all, just came home to halo for hours every night and quit playing world of warcraft indefinitely.

But that all depends on if halo 4 is going to have a skill based ranking system or not. I know a lot of people that are in the same boat that won’t even bother with halo if it does not have a rank system.

But everyone loves the game for different reasons, and everyone has a different way they like to play. I’m just a competitive guy and I like to win and hone my skills as a team player as well as an individual.

I understand the guys that just want to come home and mess around for a bit after work and don’t really care if they get better or win.

I just wish 343 would do something similar to halo 3 and have a social list as well as ranked list. So both worlds of players get a cut of the cake, instead of just saying “sorry when there is a skill based rank system people try to cheat it so were going with the casual system only”.

Just makes no sense to me, having a ranked list doesn’t affect the social guys at all, or having a skill based rank system for that matter doesn’t affect the casual guys at all. I think a large majority of the people that want a skill based rank system would rather have a rank system that “people will try to cheat” than have no rank system at all.

People will ALWAYS try to cheat, any game I’ve ever played that has any kind of skill based play or rank or reward for skill based play has people in it that will cheat or at least try to cheat the system, no matter how good the rank system its inevitable and there is simply absolutely no way around it. So don’t punish us competitive guys just because you can’t come up with some “perfect” ranking system.

Kind of like saying, “Well the frosting on the cake didn’t come out perfect so we’re just not going to give it to anyone because hey only some of you wanted a piece in the first place”.

Some of you guys may be fine with not getting any cake, you may not want any cake, but why can’t the guys that do want cake have a piece? We’re not expecting a perfect cake, we’re just happy to have a piece at all, we’re starving after Reach…

If there’s going to be a public ranking then hopefully its based on Reach’s continual ranking. I loved the idea of having to continually earn your rank, although monthly was a bit fast, perhaps 3 or 6 month seasons, and I would prefer an actual decimal ranking from the absolute worst 00.00 through to absolute best at 100.00.

Though how you rank people fairly is completely impossible lol. Perhaps just a simple win/loss/DNF figure. With perhaps some kind of recognition if your consistently dominating in losing teams.

How do you know this part?

You need skill to win, among other things.

No, the Halo 3 system was far more accurate then some people believe.

You’d have to be more specific, what is it you don’t understand about that paragraph?

I hope halo 4 implements something entirely different

I think I liked the Arena more

If I understood what you said correctly, you decide whether or not to buy a game based on its ranking system?? lol

That’s correct, $60 isn’t worth me being bored of the game after 3 months.

It’s a personal preference, I play to beat other people and get better, that all goes out the window without a ranking system of some kind.

Arena’s failure was only due in part to it’s design. A lot of people didn’t want to play any kind of ranked default Reach because default Reach was so uncompetitve that playing other good players was just frustrating and not fun in any way.
