Halo 4: Competitive Perspective

I’m sure it goes without saying that Reach was perhaps the worst thing to happen to Halo’s competitive community, period. That said, why the -yoink- is 343i allowing Halo 4 to become the spiritual successor to that -Yoink- child of the Halo franchise, AKA Reach?

I’m absolutely fed up with this care-bear land paradise ruleset that 343i/Bungie have created, and forced us to abide by. I’m of course referring to the ranking systems and matchmaking structures that have been established and maintained since Sept. 14th. 2010. I think I speak for the majority of the competitive community in saying that Reach’s ranking system was solely developed and catered to the social, or “Non-competitive” populace. This “improved” ranking system in theory was developed to prevent boosting, cheating, and hurt feelings caused by the 1-50 True skill system.

From a social mindset, the new system works perfectly. No longer should you have to worry about your KDR, or wins or losses. Heck, forget about being an asset to your team entirely, as long as you “tried” and played through the match, you will always rank up. It boggles my mind to this day how people can defend a system that flawed. No longer are wins/losses a factor in rank, only the amount of time a person has played…

The fact that 343i had the -Yoink!- to incorporate this into Halo 4, and ignore the competitive community once again, blows my -Yoinking!- mind. This is the exact same concept of Reach’s ranking structure only adapted into Halo 4’s. The key difference being that this time, there are only 140 ranks. Each of them are numbered, and obtainable not by True Skill, but by “trying”. This is obviously unacceptable from a competitive stand-point, as time played does not equal skill.

All I am asking for from 343i, is recognition. After enduring three years of the same mickey mouse bull -Yoink-. The very least they could do is give us competitive guys a separate playlist, composed of gametypes that follow a more strict competitive ruleset of the pre-existing playlists. IE: snipes, mlg, ctf, etc.
This would offer us some more variety, rather than playing the same playlist, slayer pro, on the same four maps, Haven, Adrift, Abandon, Solace… Over, and over again.

Heck, why not sweeten the deal and add an in-game leader-board, or add our True Skill ranks next to our Tags whilst in the competitive playlist. We already know you plan on implementing it into Waypoint in the near future. That’d just be icing on the cake, or… just wishful thinking. Food for thought.

100% Agree
Bring back ranks!
You should have to win to rank up! Or even actually complete game type objectives!

The other day I loaded into a game, played half a second and then my team won. I literally did absolutely nothing and still got almost 2k exp points. Thats lame.

The coddling of players has got to end.

Possible Solution:
Make two separate Playlists for everything, one ranked and one unranked. Those that want to be ranked and achieve something in game can play the ranked ones and those who are not good enough to play in ranked can enjoy themselves in unranked. That makes both camps happy.

> The coddling of players has got to end.

Exactly, this is the problem. Stop rewarding Bad Kids, for being Bad.

It’s unfortunate really, this whole rank issue…

I cant decide if 343 really just wants to push the casual aspect of MM, or if they caught on to the fact that so many preteens have the game now that they are dumbing a competitive mature rated game down for them…

Agreed.
High ranks used to belong to skilled players only: if you were bad,you had a low rank. That’s how it should be.In Halo 4 ( but in most recent games too) players are rewarded for playing a lot,not for being good. This system is both limited (nice word filter) and flawed.

It’s gotten to the point as to were 343i knows damn well what they SHOULD do, but in the interests of keeping their newest fans interest, they sellout to a CoD like system. Just my opinion…

lol
agree to a degree
there should be both competitive and non competitive or social ranks, could even have ranked and unranked games. i’m ok am not the best but i would consider myself more social and i don’t think i should be obtaining the same ranks as pro or competitive players

i thinks its fine but i do think you should get significantly more points for winning. you should get less when you lose but still get em tho for kids and people who dont play often. not everyone is trying to feel superior to others in this game.

!!! LMFAO !!!

!!! I agree !!!

343, just stop trying to KILL HALO because it’s already DEAD. Sale the HALO rights off to the makers of COD!!!

!!! LMFAO !!!

!!! Great Post !!!

-Ballz-

P.S.
When will MLG drop Halo 4 from the PRO Circuit?

!!! LMFAO !!!

If you haven’t figured out by now that rank has nothing to do with skill since 2010, then it’s entirely conceivable that you haven’t figured out yet that 343i will be rolling out a skill-based rank next year. This is because you never have and never will pay attention.

If you’re playing Halo 4 for rank, you should just stop and play something else. What you’re looking for is not here. As much as I understand your wanting recognition and so forth, and I’m not saying you shouldn’t get it, no one cares if you don’t like the game because you can’t get the kind of rank you want. Halo 4 is a great game as is. Your reasons for the inclusion of progressive ranks are just wrong. They’re just mileposts. They’re not rewards. Stop calling them that.

The ranks coming out next year will ONLY be visible on Halo Waypoint. They won’t change anything at all.

Than I can see now that my purchase of this game was a mistake. I’ve played halo competitively since Halo 2. And I can see now it’s never going to be like it was.
I play FPS games for sport. It’s the only way i can actually enjoy them. So if what you’re saying is true, kindly point me in the direction of the best competitively built FPS game for the 360. Cause CoD, aint gonna cut it.

As I said, it was clear when Reach was released that Halo as you knew it, with respect to rank, was gone and not coming back. Bungie so much as said so, and so did 343i when they changed just about everything in Reach except the rank system. If it was going to happen, it would have happened then.

Halo 4 is every bit as competitive as any other Halo game. If you don’t believe that then you just don’t know the meaning of the word competition.
