The dates provided are all accurate, if I have made any mistakes, please let me know and I will update asap.
There is a little speculation involved.

From the information provided in the May edition of GameInformer magazine, Halo 4 takes place 4 years, 7 months, and 10 days after Halo 3. Halo 3 was released September 25th, 2007. The dates below will have a large focus on Cortana’s age.

To get started with a few important dates:
November 7th, 2549: Cortana was created
August 29th, 2552: Cortana met petty officer Master Chief
September 19th, 2552: Master Chief exits cryo-sleep in the Pillar of Autumn (Start of Halo CE)
October 20th, 2552: Master Chief receives the MJOLNIR VI armor. (Start of Halo 2)
November 17th, 2552: Master Chief is found by Johnson and the Arbiter in Africa. (Start of Halo 3)
December 11th, 2552: Master Chief enters cryo-sleep in the Forward Until Dawn.

  • At this point, Cortana is 3 years old, 1 month, and 4 days old.
    March 3rd, 2553: The ceremony on Earth is held to commemorate those who have fallen in the Human-Covenant War. The Arbiter is present.
  • At this point, Cortana is 3 years old, 3 month, and 27 days old.

Speculation
Possible Dates of Halo 4:
July 21st, 2557 (When Master Chief goes into Cryo-sleep.)
October 13th, 2557 (When The ceremony on Earth occurs.)
By this time cortana is either 7 years, 8 months, and 14 days old or 7 years, 11 months and 7 days old. (By the time of the ceremony)

I find it interesting that the game takes 4 years, 7 months, and 10 days after Halo 3 because its been about 5 years since Halo 3 came out. Is there a possible correlation with real time, I doubt it, but nonetheless, I find it interesting that they are so closely related.

I hope you guys found this helpful, I just wanted to quickly put the Halo Universe into perspective leading up to the beginning of Halo 4. You see from these dates that the chief and Cortana truly didn’t know each other for that long before coming as close as we saw then in the original trilogy. Now to pose a question; since we have seen that Cortana is way past a normal AI’s life expectancy, how can this affect her in Halo 4 compared to a normal AI. Remember, she may have been altered by the gravemind for all we know that could have given her a longer life span or even a shorter one. It seems that she has a normal state of mind in the first level of Halo 4. (Based on the information GameInformer magazine included.) It claims they have their sarcastic friendly back and forth throughout the first level of the game, so when would we expect Cortana to start dealing with rampancy?

Petty Officer Master Chief??? His name is John. Master Chief was his rank after he was promoted.

I know his name, but people know him both as John, Master Chief, Chief, etc. The date is what is important. I thought it was interesting that Chief and Cortana met the same year reach fell, they really didn’t know each other for a long time but still got close so quickly. I mean, she did live in his head for a few months.

No problem! I too was confused so did some research that I thought the community would like to see and speculate from there. Its also nice to not see a flamer thread or a positive thread every now and then. :slight_smile:

I would say we will get signs throughout the campaign that something is off, Halo is full of those little moments. Her first time inside the control room on Installation 04 in Halo CE and the entirety of Halo 3 pertained to her mental state. So likelyhood is, we will get small signs throughout, a larger moment about halfway through and the end of the game will be another big moment, leading into Halo 5.

Thanks for being the first to actually address the question i posed lol. My impression was the first two levels at least she will be fine or by the end of the second level. 343i stated they want us to feel a familiar Halo campaign feel in the beginning of the game. These first two levels almost mirror Halo CE. First level of Halo CE we are on a UNSC ship, the pillar of autumn fighting off covenant who have boarded. Same with Halo 4 except its a different faction of the covenant and we are waking up from cryo on the Forward until Dawn and not the Autumn. Second level of CE deals with exploring a mysterious ring world while Halo 4’s second level we will be exploring a mysterious shield world. I see the parallels obviously and feel Cortana’s state most likely will be normal at this point, but after that its fair game to happen whenever. Maybe something will trigger the rampancy?

OT: Does anyone have a predicted date when “Holiday 2012” will be. I want to see if theres at all any correlation to the story or if its simply a date that will be best for sales.
