I’ve been wondering how 343 will be implementing betrayal booting, assuming that most gametypes will have friendly fire on. The system in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach seemed inadequate and very random; sometimes allowing you to boot someone on their first betrayal, while in other instances you might get killed 3 or 4 times for the sniper rifle without the option popping up.
I think a system that would work would be a ‘two-strike and you’re out system.’ Basically, you get one free betrayal with no chance of being booted, and every betrayal after that will cause the boot option to pop up for the betrayed player. This could maybe be extended to 3 strikes on certain gametypes, like BTB, where betrayals may happen more often.
Also, to further prevent teamkilling, the option should pop up even if the enemy damaged the player, but his teammate finished him off, (even though it would still count as the opposing team’s kill).
What do you think?
That system would not be a bad idea but one thing I really hated about Reach’s betrayal booting system was how unpredictable it was. There were times I got betrayed like 10 times in a row and I never got the option to kill them once but the second i fought back I get booted. It was inconsistent and unfair.
It should stay with reach’s system.
If you betray on purpose, the other player will not get a boot option.
If you betray by accident, the other player automatically insta-boots you.
Now what’s wrong with that system?

Because it’s impossible to for the system to tell whether a kill was an accident or not. It might try, but I’ve been booted for a single accidental betrayal plenty of times, and failed to receive the boot option when someone kills me several times in a row, (obviously on purpose).
The Reach system would be nice if it worked, but it doesn’t, and I honestly don’t think it could.

I think I detect sarcasm.
OT: Not a bad idea…It’s a bit tricky because…well…the booting system will never be perfect.

Yeah, but we can’t have perfection (unfortunately). In a perfect world, Reach’s system would work flawlessly, but alas… My system would still get some innocent players booted, but I think it would do better at punishing teamkillers, and give non-teamkillers a free pass for an accidental betrayal. Nothing sucks worse than throwing a grenade into a firefight, accidentally betraying a teammate, and being instantly booted within the first minute of the game.
How about friendly fire just gets turned off altogether?

It’s tricky I know.
Unfortunately the only way to stop innocent booting is to turn off friendly fire but that also comes with some problems.
Very tricky…

You could do that but I know some people would complain.
