Now we all know that automatic weapons in Halo have always been useless. They have small magazines, short range and low damage. We all know that Halo’s gameplay revolves around landing those headshots with the precision weapons. Do you think it would be a good idea if automatic weapons (e.g. AR, Storm Rifle) got a headshot damage boost?
ive always thought the automatic rifles in halo were pretty good yes the range was bad but in close quarters i liked them better then the BR or DMR
> Now we all know that automatic weapons in Halo have always been useless.
No they’re not. They’re all quite usefull, you just need to learn how to use them.
> We all know that Halo’s gameplay revolves around landing those headshots with the precision weapons.
No it doesn’t. This isn’t Sniper Elite V2.
> Do you think it would be a good idea if automatic weapons (e.g. AR, Storm Rifle) got a headshot damage boost?
Nope, that will encourage “spray and pray”, making the gameplay more shallow.
The Halo:CE Assault Rifle did headshot bonus damage…
I think 343i should just buff the automatic weapons, give them larger clips, but maybe slightly nerf their range to just CQC.
Automatic weapons aren’t that bad. It’s just that people don’t know how to use them.
> Automatic weapons aren’t that bad. It’s just that people don’t know how to use them.
Oh really? Try beating someone with a BR in Halo 3 in close-quarters. And make sure they have thumbs and a brain.
The automatic weapons need significant buffs to be effective in their respective ranges and their current performance in Halo 4 is heading in the right direction.

Look at it from the other direction when comparing weapons. Try and think of way the weapons work from that angle.

I understand what you are trying to say, but if automatic weapons are clearly ineffective at the range they are supposed to be superior in, then weapon balance must be altered. Automatics (aside from the needler) need some slight buffing, mainly magazine size. Even a slight damage boost wouldn’t hurt.

i kicked soooo many peoples -Yoinks!- whith the AR in halo 3 i thought it was just as good as the BR

Oh come off it. In halo 3 there was something to whiping out an SMG and Plasma Rifle but there’s no way you can say “oh, you’re just using it wrong” in Reach given the new melee system which more or less invalidated the AR charge and balance tweaks that seemed only to exaggerate the advantages of semiauatomatic weapons. The needler may have been alright but it can’t compensate for what else was done to it’s category. And at any rate none of those weapons approached the versitility and killing potential of the DMR (3 kills per clip, useful at almost any range, anti-vehicle, ect.) representing a pretty good sized gulf between the categories which is more or less exclusive to our little franchise.
> No it doesn’t. This isn’t Sniper Elite V2.
No, but it’s still a game where the most used weapons (see STATS) are DMR’s, BR’s, or their equivalanets and the sniper comes up not far behind those. Ergo, it’s a game about headshots. Yes there are exceptions, but none that radically change the tone of the game to overcome the effect of these much more used weapons.
> Nope, that will encourage “spray and pray”, making the gameplay more shallow.
Not necessarily. Both Section 8 and Space Marine, games in Halo’s genre of gameplay, give significant damage bonuses for headshots with automatic weapons and by objective criteria (ex. weapon usage stats) both of those games are much better balanced than Halo (well at least Reach.) The former also fosters a much greater diversity and depth of strategy than Halo, if I do say so myself from my considerable experience there, and the later is more or less on par.
So, it’s worth a shot if 343 can stand to rebalance the whole game at this point to accommodate such a significant change. Given that they probably can’t, though, this is probably something we should look at for Halo 5 (if at all. It may work for these games but they aren’t, after all, Halo.)

No, that wasn’t what I was saying. You’re implying an AR is too underpowered to beat a BR, even at short range. I said look at it from the opposite way, as in that the AR isn’t underpowered but rather the BR is overpowered. Try and view the overall game from that angle.

You want the BR, with kill-times already at a lengthy durations, to be even less? For heaven’s sake, we already have a 5-shot BR, no need to further nerf it out of existence.

Good point. If you simply buff the AR you risk putting it at serious odds with pure CQC weapons which in themselves might not be unbalanced. Though likewise if you nerf the DMR you may cause another relationship to break (ex. sniper versus it.) So you must take the larger view, whatever you do.

That’s a rather glib assessment. A 5 shot BR isn’t a useless weapon nor will it be if you take alittle away from it’s clip or ROF so long as you accommodate for that in competing weapons. IE. if you do anything to touch the BR you must do something to the DMR, Carbine, pistol, or anything else in it’s class to make sure you have a healthy relationship between everything in the sandbox (ie. the game is balanced.) After all, if you nerf the BR out of existence to promote the AR the next gun down the list of precision weapons (ex. the DMR) is simply going to take it’s place, though just an iota’s worth less effective, and you’ll still be left with the same problem. So, the larger view and all that.

I’m Christian(my name) (your xbox name)
But, on topic, both are just as useful if you know how to use it, I’m more of an br/ dmr fan but some people kicked my but with the AR in some situations.
